Former Major League pitcher and mental skills coach for two of baseball's legendary franchises (the Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants) Bob Tewksbury takes fans inside the psychology of baseball. In Ninety Percent Mental , Bob Tewksbury shows readers a side of the game only he can provide, given his singular background as both a longtime MLB pitcher and a mental skills coach for two of the sport's most fabled franchises, the Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants. Fans watching the game on television or even at the stadium don't have access to the mind games a pitcher must play in order to get through an at-bat, an inning, a game. Tewksbury explores the fascinating psychology behind baseball, such as how players use techniques of imagery, self-awareness, and strategic thinking to maximize performance, and how a pitcher's strategy changes throughout a game. He also offers an in-depth look into some of baseball's most monumental moments and intimate anecdotes from a "who's who" of the game, including legendary players who Tewksbury played with and against (such as Mark McGwire, Craig Biggio, and Greg Maddux), game-changing managers and executives (Joe Torre, Bruce Bochy, Brian Sabean), and current star players (Jon Lester, Anthony Rizzo, Andrew Miller, Rich Hill). With Tewksbury's esoteric knowledge as a thinking-fan's player and his expertise as a "baseball whisperer", this entertaining book is perfect for any fan who wants to see the game in a way he or she has never seen it before. Ninety Percent Mental will deliver an unprecedented look at the mound games and mind games of Major League Baseball. Review: Great for Anyone in the Great Game of Baseball - Great book by a great person having a tremendous influence on the baseball world. As someone who works in the sport psychology world and loves baseball, I've read just about everything there is on the topic. Although I looked forward to the book, it made me wonder what Tewks would do for his approach to bring something new to the table. Well, he found a great way to do so with his writing style and format of the book. Tewks weaves the story of his baseball career with that of his career as a mental skills coach in a way that offers really interesting stories and provides valuable content regardless of whether you're reading as a player or coach. He is very open in giving some of his signature techniques with players but making it very clear the relationships you build trump any skill- it's about the people. The book is well written and easy to read. No matter your existing knowledge of the mental side, I think you'll find it both enjoyable and valuable. Well done by Tewks! Review: Loved the mental nuggets and great stories! - Entertaining read from beginning to end, but the real value for me was found in the mental approach and preparation to being a competitor. Both of my teenage kids play 2 sports each and I coach them regularly. This book has given me great insight into leading them both through slumps and performance struggles. It has given me a โlanguageโ to communicate with as a coach and parent. Itโs not just about talent or even training. Thanks Bob for giving us a glimpse into your life and the world of pro baseball.

Good Baseball Psychology Book
The author has worked as a baseball psychologist. Though most baseball players would probably frown on seeing a psychologist, most would agree that base is a large part mental. I found it very interesting. The author also played in the major leagues, which makes even more credible.

Very impactful book for any baseball fan
Truly impactful book written by a very cerebral pitcher who knows the game inside and out, but has the ability to break it down so it can be understood by all. Novices to experts and everyone in between who wants to get to know the game will appreciate this.

Not What It Was Cracked Up to Be
The author gave us a nice review of his pitching career and I had forgotten his background. Obviously after that his citations of how different hurlers approached various hitters (or how he did himself) was of interest. But after a lot of these mental approaches to pitching were featured, the book seemed to become a bit repetitious. In fact so much so that I never did finish it! Probably a good book for a high school, perhaps even a college coach to share with members of their pitching staffs so that they might see how the pros approach pitching.

A must read for athletes and parents
First off let me disclose that I know and like Bob Tewksbury. I want to be above board here. With that said, I loved this book. I bought 3 more copies, two for young baseball players I know and one for my daughter, an ice hockey player. This book is not only great, but it will make you think about your sport. The info inside about breathing, slowing things down and positive self talk are invaluable. I'd put it in the "must read" category for athletes or, parents.

Great Read for Coaches
Great book on the mental side of coaching baseball. As a coach of multiple sports, it also goes beyond just baseball coaching. With personal insights that add to the info itโs worth the read.

Engaging book about the importance of using your mind to achieve your goals.
I loved this book. Having relied upon my mental skills as a football player, I appreciated hearing how professional athletes rely on their mental skills to achieve their success. Although Tewks talks about his baseball career, the principals he describes apply to almost any sport. Visioning, positive self talk, mental routines and anchor statements are key to success on the field of play and in life. Great job!
