Lady Betty Across the Water (Perfect Library) Review: Highly amusing 1905 "society novel". - This admittedly nostalgicly silly novel is one of my favorites. My mother snitched it from my grandmother's library and recommended it to me one day when I was bored with everything else in the house. I thought it was really funny, which I'm sure was not the author's intention. That was about 65 years ago. I used it as the basis of my entry in a 'Silliest novel ever written by a 14-year-old.' contest. I won! Alice Williamson and her husband wrote a number of books of this nature about the rich and privileged of the early 1900 and its interesting to read about a world long gone. The books are quite well written but Williamson is no Jane Austen and her characters are more of a reflection on the frivolousness of the moneyed gentry of the New York 400 era, than any sort of comment on human nature. Living a life of luxury seems a pretty poor preparation for life. I'd bet on Elizabeth Bennett handling anything life ever threw at her. Lady Betty ---- not so much. However, the C.N and A.M Williamson books are still in print after well over 100 years, so it seems many people enjoy reading about the years just before everybody who was anybody went down on the Titanic. :) Review: Charming! - Delightful story, tho somewhat dated, esp in comments by lady betty about Americans, esp servants...written in 1905, and sometimes that shows...but on the whole a pleasant romance with a good moral tone and some fun scenes...a few typos, but not too bad...
