Reliable and good gaming router!
Have this paired with modem netgear cm-1200, ASUS extender rp-ac1900 (Ethernet back on for the ai mesh system). And Comcast gigabit internet. And all Ethernet cables are cat7. Always have 2 wired desktop PCs, 9 wireless connections. I recommend for any gamer. I love this router! Super easy set up, easy mesh setup. If you do wifi mesh you will drop a lot of MB’s. I only got 150 after wifi mesh. But it was solid and reliable. So I went with Ethernet back haul and got 600+on the other end of my house (60ft away from router.) 650 on the same side of the house as the router. 998Mbs lan to pc. I also only use the 5G wifi. Turned off 2.4G. After a month I had the issues everyone else had. Actually had it on the last router cause this was its replacement (old:asus ac-68u). Still had internet wifi issues. Had Comcast come out and look things over. They said since I just replace the router my less than 1 year old arris sb-8200 modem was the issue. Yeah, ok… So I bought the net gear cm-1200 to make sure. Still had issues. I really wanted to solve this wifi dropping the internet issue. Found a connection for the cable out side my house, looked good but when the problem happened if I disconnected it and reconnected it the issue would go away for a few days. I replaced the cable with a 100’ Kable direct cable and ran directly from the modem to the isp connection. Never had an issue again. Has been 12 months no problems. Have had the router for 16 months. Great features on the ap. Firmware updates via the app. I love this router. All in all, the issues I had was all the bad reviews on all sites. Turns out it was just a bad connection to isp. How many others have this issue and don’t know/think to check the connection to the modem from isp. Also this router has a feature called Dfs to change the frequency of the wifi. Found a really old thread on Reddit about a50s losing connection to base station due to wifi interference. And Omg my gen 2 asto A50s work again no cutting out. Who would of thought. That router signals was what was causing the astro a50s to lose connection to base station. Even better for ASUS to put that Dfs button click to fix the issue instead of trying to change the frequency manually. After all of that having solid internet and then getting to use my a50s again was total bonus!

This is a very strong, and well made router!
This router has impressed me. Before hand I was using a Linksys WRT32X which is similar to the Linksys 3200ACM. I would run my whole network through a VPN (ExpressVPN) to be exact. It would bogg down my network speed to 50mbps up and down. This Asus GT-AC2900 can run my VPN at 220mps down and 180mbps up without a problem through OpenVPN. In the past I've used L2TP encrycrption on a TP-link 3200 archer and was able to achieve 100mbps but that router died. Using VPNfusion I am able to select individual devices to run directly from my ISP and the surprising thing to me is how flawlessly it performs. I have about 10- 19 devices running at any given time. I configured the router to send every connection through a openVPN tunnel. So any device that enters my network is protected but I manually selected 3 desktops we use for gaming to go through our basic internet for lowest ping times and fastest download and upload speeds. I experienced some issues visiting websites like Amazon through the connections I made exceptions for and had to manually configure a DNS for each to solve the problem, that seems to be my ISP's fault. My full connection speed from my ISP is 500mbps up and down and on the connections outside of the VPN I am getting the full bandwidth of my connection. The dual core processor should be more than enough horse power for anyone I assume. I also understand OpenVPN is a single threaded application and I'm sure that plays a huge part in why it runs so well, since one core is free to do the other tasks. I've currently only had the router for a few days so time will tell how it holds up but so far it's been great. Anyone looking to use the Game Boost features though alongside a VPN might run into problems though. When I had to tried to run it through my nonVPN connections it caused my VPN connections to disconnect and run through my native internet which wasn't ideal. WTFast seemed to work I didn't get an improvement in ping times from it though and it only supports one device on your network at a time. I took a risk going with this router over the Asus 86u since I couldn't find out any information about it's VPN performance. The Asus 86u is a very similar router but it has a 32bit 1.8ghz processor this one is a 64bit 1.8ghz processor and as far as I know the Asus 86u doesn't have VPNfusion allowing you to run multiple connection types at once. Some details on VPNfusion I would like to share I figure someone might want to know. You can run up to 4 protocols at once and it works with OpenVPN, L2TP, and PPTP in client mode. You can also store up to 16 configurations (different servers) I've only used OpenVPN though. It also have VPN server functionality for PPTP, OpenVPN and IPSec VPN. Lastly in terms of ping times I had a significant reduction going from the Linksys WRT32X to this Asus GT AC-2900 in Fortnite my ping would be around 36-32 on my closest server and now sits around 22-14 I also play on a further server to play with friends on the other side of the world and used to get 100ping there and now I get 75-65. In Modern Warfare I dropped by about 15-20 there as well. I hope this helps someone, I would have liked to have this information myself previous to buying but I'm so glad I took my chance with it!

Loses signal (2.4 and 5.0 GHz bands) As well Ethernet intermediately will drop.
When I first received this router it was nothing but trouble. The 2.4 GHz band was the first culprit not producing the amount of data that it should even at a very close proximity. The 5.0. Ghz band was great to begin with but devices would periodically fall off of it as it would stop emitting a signal and show back up 30 seconds to a minute later. During working from home my connection would drop randomly through Ethernet and come back. I've had it for over a week and it's been a head ache. I'm returning this in the coming days and trying out Netgear. EDIT: So after further troubleshooting we ended up replacing our ISP modem with a third party modem. After doing so the router has been performing as it should and problems have ceased. We did recieve the Netgear router and the setup process was terrible and would fail. Honestly never even got it up and running. Pretty happy things ended this way because the Netgear routers build quality is no where near what the ASUS router is. (Changing the amount of stars to reflect my experience) The only problem I have with the ASUS router is that some settings do require it to be restarted. It may not state that it needs to be manually restarted but it does. (Settings such as QoS won't reset unless a restart is initiated.)

Phenomenal Router
From the years 2017 to 2022, I found myself replacing my ISP-issued router every six months due to boot loop errors plaguing my online experience. I also wished to manage my own inside network, but the ISP started migrating router management to a mobile app that I could not use due to access issues. After turning in their router, saving $5 a month, and purchasing this one, I have had no issues with boot loops or access to my own network. The performance and throughput on this router is incredible, especially when you have QoS configured to prioritize gaming and your gaming devices IPs reserved at the top of the DHCP table on wired connections. The WiFi coverage, when set to maximum, literally covers my whole house and then some. I was still able to get two of three bars outside my home near my neighbors house. This is of course, a roughly 1200 sqft home where I have the router centrally placed. If you have a larger home, this router uses a proprietary AiMesh protocol so you may invest in other AiMesh nodes to expand your coverage if needed, though I cannot attest for that feature as I have not used it. I also appreciate the dual-band connectivity feature, where closer devices will connect on the faster 5GHz band, and further devices will connect on the 2.4GHz band seamlessly while only broadcasting one SSID. There's also a nifty DoS Protection that you can enable in the firewall, though, rather thankfully, I have not seen how good it actually is either. Overall, this is a great router for both gaming and general use, especially for the value.

REVIEW FOR ASUS RAPTURE GT-AC2900
The ASUS rog rapture 2900 has been live for 7 hours now and all I can say is that I’m extremely satisfied. Upload and download prior to today has been disconnecting intermittently for 4 weeks. When it’s been online my download will be exactly what I’m paying for while my upload wouldn’t even give me 70-80% of what I’m paying for. I’m talking paying for ten upload and getting 4-6 at its worst 2. Disconnecting me from discord causing constant disconnects/reconnects. Troubleshot over the course of those weeks and all this started happening when I received spectrums new modem and router. I ran plenty of tests while on the router to deem it the issue. Ran plenty of tests while solely connected to the modem and it was stable and I was getting exactly what I was paying for from my isp. After a long and long search going down the craziest rabbit hole. I came across this router from ASUS. Setup was so easy and FUN. The moment I turned off the modem. Connected my router and plugged everything in, powered it all on and the router was already receiving internet. Got on my computer and I was able to set it up following the wizard with ease. Ran a speed test every thirty or so minutes and my upload locked at 10 even 11 at times. Getting as low as 8-9 only for once of those tests. Configured adaptive qos. Game boost. Played with the rgb. Enabled air protection. Fully configurable firewall. Mac filtering. This thing is awesome and it has VPN. Absolutely ridiculously awesome. I will provide an update after a month or so if she remains stable! Six days later and I AM STILL getting speeds locked at exactly what I’m paying for. Can’t say enough good things about this router. Qos was simple. My twitch streams are smooth as eggs now with my upload not spiking all over the place. All I could honestly ask for. Great router

REPEATER MODE FOR GAMING
( I cannot comment on the unit as a router since I only use it in "Repeater mode". So this review is based on that. ) This router in repeater mode changes channels on one band every 15 minutes. However, switching "WPA-Auto-Personal" to strictly "WPA2-Personal" in the "Authentication Method" drop down selector may or may not stop it if this concerns you. Turns out it's not a big deal. I looked into this in-depth and it looks as if the router/repeater is supposed to do this. Apparently this is done in order to help relieve network congestion. It fills up the log with channel change info but no errors if everything is setup right. I don't see or feel any network interruptions in VR because of it so I'm going to just let it roll. The signal strength seems strong and steady and doesn't drop out. You have to choose which band you want to repeat during setup and it will broadcast both signals after restart however, you cannot connect any devices to the unrepeated band. I chose the 5G band for gaming and so now the 2.4 ghz band changes channels every 15 minutes. The 5G channel stays locked in as it should. Probably the reverse is true if you choose to repeat the 2.4 instead of the 5G. NOTE: Router and repeater WPA/WPA2 security methods should be set the exact same. Set your router up with all your devices connected first and turn on your repeater LAST! Now you can connect devices to the repeater. Some devices can't choose between two identical SSID's on their own so I named the SSID's on my repeater and router to be different. There are two schools of thought on this subject but I found this to work best for me and my log confirms it. My network has good speeds and pings and no log errors after reboot completes. The admin GUI has a RSSI signal meter, Live Mbps link rate meter, a live network traffic graph and live ping info which I found very useful for setup. My ping is in to 20 millisecond range and my speed test averages 290-295 Mbps from first floor to second floor through quite a few barriers. This is not a tri-band repeater but it will work with a tri-band router. The bridge mode works best with a twin model but not so well with other models like my TP-Link AC4000 Tri-Band for instance. This is a 2019 model with a 2022 firmware update. Edited: 07/31/2022

Confirmed AiMesh incompatibility - x3!
*UPDATED 5/12/22 & 5/30/22 - SEE BOTTOM* Good router, but useless to me! One star for a major compatibility oversight. If you are like me and own a trusty RT-AC1900P and are considering buying this GT-AC2900 to use them in AiMesh mode to expand your range, then this router is NOT for you. I just spent the last 5 days doing extensive testing to solve the mystery. TL;DR: The AC2900 in AiMesh router mode doesn't accept the AC1900P as a node, a critical flaw when it's advertised as compatible. But let me be clear - if you will *not* be using AiMesh *specifically* with an RT-AC1900P, then this router *is* a five-star choice. The details: I had one AC1900P already. I needed to use AiMesh to extend my signal out to a concrete block building about 100 feet away from my house. Any radio reception out there is scarce...again, concrete block. So I bought an additional AC1900P to try AiMesh, and I saw this one for just a few bucks more, so I bought both. I also borrowed a friend's AX58U for test purposes. Long story short, AiMesh is truly amazing. With both AC1900Ps meshed, I can get about half my original speed in the external building. Impressive IMO. If the AX58U is the router and the 1900P is the node, I actually get 95% of the original speed. Incredible, truly, but I don't want to spend AX58U money... When I tried the AC2900 as the AiMesh router with the AC1900P as the node...nothing. The AC2900 doesn't recognize my old AC1900P. I thought maybe it was a fluke, so I tried the new AC1900P. Same result. What is really odd though is that both AC1900Ps will find the AC2900 every time when using the AC2900 as a node. That's useless though, because you want the stronger router to act as the router and the weaker one to be the node. No matter what, the AX58U meshed with everything perfectly as both router and node. After 5 hours of trying, I gave up and called Asus tech support. I explained, and they said "no problem, I'll walk you through it." They reached the same dead end. So I said I'd reset all of them and start fresh. I made them hold my hand for every detail. They even tried hardwiring them together to make them mesh. No dice. After an hour and a half, they were out of answers. They claimed it was defective. So I requested a defective return via Amazon and they sent a new GT-AC2900 replacement. I opened it up today and started over again. Same exact results. Both AC1900Ps will accept both AC2900s as nodes, but the AC2900s in router mode refuse to accept either AC1900P as a node. Two identical units of each type give identical results. That's not a fluke. I know I sound crazy... Who tests 5 routers side-by-side? Well, I took photos for proof, but I had to return my friend's AX58U prior to the pictures. I definitely know how to use Asus AiMesh, considering I was shown every way possible via tech support. I'm no amateur with computers. It works perfectly every time, every way, except when the GT-AC2900 is the AiMesh router and an RT-AC1900P is the AiMesh node. I will be calling Asus back during business hours tomorrow and revealing this data to them. Hopefully this gets corrected, and hopefully this helps a fellow RT-AC1900P owner make an informed choice. *UPDATE 5/12/22* After finding more time to tackle this issue, I purchased an Asus ROG Strix GS-AX3000 router to perform this same task: using it as an AiMesh router to serve my AC-1900P node, a task that my friend's RT-AX3000 had no issues doing (which means my AC1900P is not the culprit here). To my complete disbelief, THE GS-AX3000 HAS THE EXACT SAME ISSUE! Another two hour phone call to tech support Tier 2 led to another "it must be defective" answer. Even Asus couldn't get them to mesh. 3 out of 3 ROG routers across two different models is no coincidence. Asus needs to promptly remove the "AiMesh Router" capability from their marketing material for all of these ROG routers before they get sued by someone for false advertising. Again, both ROG routers will work as AiMesh nodes, but NOT as AiMesh routers. No more ROG routers for me, AiMesh is a feature I cannot go without. I love Asus and can't stand the thought of buying another inferior brand, but this is too large of an oversight to pretend they didn't know about. I guess I'll be getting an RT-AX3000 and stop trusting Asus to competently advertise features. *Update 5/30/22* Because I refuse to give up on Asus, I bought a second identical GS-AX3000 because my local big box "W" store was practically throwing them away (<$60). Unlike the GT-AC2900, the GS-AX3000 *DOES* work as an AiMesh *ROUTER* to another AX3000. So this now confirms that Asus' claimed AiMesh compatibility has major holes and unfortunately it does seem random among models. Thankfully it's not random among individual units. The best advice I can give is YMMV when serving nodes of other model routers. This will be my final update unless something really weird or bad happens. I now have an optimal network setup, so no more experiments for me.

Fantastic
This router solved the vast majority of the networking issues I have been having. Its signal strength is more than triple what I was receiving with my Hitron CGN3 from the same room, and its easy to use QoS settings were able to fix 100% of my bandwidth issues. Dead spots no longer exist in my house, which is perfect. Its footprint on my desk is also great, and doesn't look like the mothership from District 9 like a lot of the contemporary routers look like nowadays. The only gripes I do have are A) the price is a bit steep given you can pick up the similar performing RT-AC68U for almost $100 cheaper; however, if you're completely addicted to RGB like the rest of us are then you obviously can't stop at RGB headphones and RGB deskmats; might as well go all-out and get an RGB router too. The other issue I have is that I wish there was more customization in terms of the offered RGB; you're stuck with either one static colour or a rainbow effect on every setting with no in between at all. In all seriousness though, I'd recommend this 100% if you're in the market for a router that also functions as an odd conversation piece.
