Maine Sublime: Frederic Edwin Church's Landscapes of Mount Desert and Mount Katahdin (The Olana Collection)

Beautiful Book Showing Katahdin and Acadia National Park (Bar Harbor)
Having read a number of the Reviews prior to puchasing the book, I was afraid the Church paintings might be reduced to the point that their beauty did not come through. Such is most certainly not the case. I really liked the artist's style and his use of colors to acurately portray the coast of Maine.

Church's Landscapes of Maine
A small but important study of the work produced by Church. I paint the Maine landscapes myself so it is great to see how Church dealt with the material that is out there for all of us contemporary landscape painters to work with.

A beautiful book
The selection of paintings in this book is fantastic and the plates are excellent quality reproductions. Overall, such beauty in the paintings, I practically wanted to cry. (Okay, a bit of an exaggeration, but superb.)

Sublime indeed...
Frederick Church was one of the artists of the Hudson River School, who happened to draw much of his early inspiration from landscapes and seascapes in Maine. This particular book is drawn from the Olana Collection, gathering Church's work of Mount Desert Island on the Atlantic coast and the Mount Katahdin region in interior Maine. The narrative frames Church's work in the context of his personal biography, his artistic universe, and that of the United States as it marched toward a devastating Civil War. Church's finished paintings and sketches are presented, along with a few examples of other artists who worked the same areas. As other reviewers have noted, some of the effect of Church's excellent work is lost in half-page reproductions in an already undersized format for a book on art. Recommended.
