New York, 1955, Private Detective Harry Angel has a new case on his hands. Washed up crooner Johnny Favorite has gone missing. Anybody that might be holding clues is being killed. Informants and witnesses are being murdered one by one. The bodies are piling up, time is running out and Harry Angel is being kept awake at night by strange satanic visions. From the mean streets of New York to the backwoods of New Orleans, Harry suddenly finds himself being dragged into a world of sex, murder, voodoo and death. This is no ordinary case, and Harry is no ordinary detective. Directed by Alan Parker (Midnight Express, Mississippi Burning) and starring Mickey Rourke (Sin City, The Wrestler), Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver, Heat), Lisa Bonet (High Fidelity) and Charlotte Rampling (Red Sparrow), Angel Heart is a deeply disturbing film with an incredibly unsettling atmosphere. A prime example of late eighties neo-noir, it successfully manages to blend elements of detective fiction with dark horror.Brand new 4K restorationExtras: Alan Parker interview excerpt from Cinéastes des années 80Audio Commentary with Alan ParkerIntroduction to Angel Heart by Alan ParkerA Background in VoodooOriginal EPK and Behind the Scenes FootageBehind the Scenes Gallery

An 80s neo noir classic remastered in glorious 4k
Censorship notwithstanding that is being debated in many other online forums, this is a beautiful transfer. Having owned its various incarnations from DVD to Blu-ray, I took a leap of faith once more (pun intended) and triple-dipped into this title. I was not disappointed. It is in Dolby Vision as well, if anyone is interested to know. There is also a nice little booklet detailing the making of this film.Highly recommended. The title is not available in the US yet. I assume it is the censored scene and copyright issue as this film is being released by Studio Canal. I would imagine Lionsgate releasing this in US.

A BRUTAL AND GRIM TALE
I was reminded of this film by a trusted fellow reviewer recently when he commented on a reviewI'd written, though I remember watching the film probably back in the early 90s I remembered verylittle about the plot so thought I'd re-visit.Set in the mid-50sThe story itself is a dark and grim tale telling of how a two-bit private investigator Harry Angel(Mickey Rourke) is hired by a mysterious man Loise Cypher (Robert De Niro) to track down John Lieblinga crooner in the 40's known as Johnny Favorite who'd seemingly disappeared. The investigation seems beyond Harry's comfort zone early-on with an apparent suicide by a formerphysician among the early issues faced, Harry wants to quit the case but is offered a large sum of moneyby Cypher to continue. The trail will take Harry down several roads of enquiry, some leading to him facing threat, and the worryingfact that those who'd seemingly known the crooner who he'd interviewed ending up dead.Eventually, he will be told certain truths about Johnny, but, what truth will surface? And who is Cypher really? why had he been hired? With tales and glimpses of brutal violence along with sexual sequences not a film for the faint-hearted I feel.I felt the film a bit slow at times, especially during the first halfAlso, from the little I do remember of the film I believe many cuts have been made down the years. The 4k upgrade is pretty good in the main..

Dark, gripping and gruesome, blended perfectly
Before the Rourke car crash, this gem of a film blending thriller, film-noir and supernatural elements should be high on everyone’s collection list. The 4K transfer is stunning, with the naturally dark film benefitting from subtle HDR, Alan Parker’s visions has definitely improved with technology.
