Will be a science fair winner
We purchased this for my son's science project, the tank was easy to set up, i just wished there were more planting instructions. But it comes with everything but fish, we added a decoration later for the fish to have a hiding place but if you dont care about fish comfort, they tank is perfect and grows crops in no time. It looks great, it works even better, overall a great value for the money. It is hard to clean as the filter tubing is hard and the pump it's suction cupped to the bottom, making it hard to take the top off for cleaning

Very good beginner aquaponic system
Great starter aquaponic system for the money. Easy to set up from the included instructions. It comes with clay balls as a growth medium but you shouldn't use those if you are growing sprouts in the seed tray. The pea sprouts germinated quickly in the tray by spraying them with water three times a day or so and covering them with the included cheese cloth. Once they sprouted they really took off! I harvested a bit already and added to a salad. Quite tasty! The tank is really only big enough for one fish, so I chose a male betta and I added a couple small shrimp to keep the substrate clean. The pump is quiet and works well. The only draw back is if you need to take off the top and add or rearrange anything the pump has suction cups at the bottom and you have to reattach it to the tube every time. Pretty much a two person operation. Otherwise a very good purchase!

Nice idea, maybe not great execution
Very pretty but as most reviewers noted, it's a bit small and some fish will hate it. Fish big enough to handle the water influx will feel cramped, fish small enough to like their little studio aquarium might be overwhelmed when the upper chamber drains. The dainty little pump is easily blocked by vegetation so it's not easily compatible with any kind of aquascaping. A nice starter set to see how a bell siphon system should operate and the upper trays are cleverly and conveniently assembled. If it were a bit larger for the same price it would be better.

A neat idea, but probably not a great home for your pet fish
I like the idea of this, and the kit has everything you need to get started. My peas are sprouting nicely. However, I put a betta fish in it, and I find that the water coming back in from the pump creates too strong (and sometimes inconsistent) a current for him and he has to avoid that whole corner. It spun him around into the gravel. The filter is very basic, and probably nowhere near enough given that the water is traveling through all the clay rocks even with the plants supplementing filtering. There isn't a lot of room to add accessories like a heater or additional filter. There is no light, and a light source strong enough for the plants has the potential to cause temperature variation unpleasant to the fish. Can a fish live in this tank? Yes, I think so. Can a fish be comfortable in this tank? Probably not very. I think this tank is probably better suited for aquatic plants below and non-aquatic above, with a good nearby light source. I have had mine set up less than a week and have already bought a traditional fish tank for the betta. This isn't a bad product, but I don't think it's an ideal home for a live pet and I won't be keeping a fish in it.

Poor quality.
This tank is the worse set up I have ever seen. It over flows all the time. Has poor instructions. The drain on the top that allows water back into the tank gets clogged all the time from the rocks in the top which creates it to over flow and water to run everywhere.

Adorable for ghost shrimp or single betta; see tips in review
During assembly it seemed as though I was going to break the tube for the pump in order for it to fit the lid. With the help of someone braver putting more pressure, it actually did fit well. However it made me nervous about what water changes would be like since it would be a pain to disassemble each time with the pump. After a mystery leak for still an unknown cause (came from the lid only and stopped the second it was unplugged,so I think the pump must have been slightly off the tube by accident and it was suctioning water and dumping out the top because it has NEVER recurred and I’ve had this going nonstop for a couple months, just test yours for a couple days first out of precaution), I reduced the water level to only about max 2/3 out of precaution for my ghost shrimp. It evaporates and I have to add a bit of dechlorinated water each week which works out way better than I thought for water changes instead of me having to take anything apart to remove water. The photo is before I added the weekly water. This would be too small for anything but a single fish (think betta, others would be lonely), or else just ghost shrimp like I have. Be sure you know husbandry of your critter before you assemble this, because the instructions had unsafe info for fish and shouldn’t be followed for anything but the assembly info. Also be sure to rinse your plant very well before adding to the top. My mint were washed before and still I was surprised that they came with aphids. To keep my shrimp safe I’m not using any products to stop them, am just in a cycle of removing them with water periodically until I can eventually stop the cycle. Overall I’m very happy with the tank!

Good idea
It’s a lot better than expected. The swirl part helps to make more Stratton and it comes with charcoal and nitrogen bacteria as well as salt to prepare the water. Then they also give you seeds and fish food

Not a functioning hydroponic system.
Cute-ish fish tank. Does not work for hydroponics. Removing the lid to clean will always upset your pump system.
