Do the lights twinkle when they are on ?

No, they so not twinkle. They are steady lights. If they are twinkling, maybe check the place your light is absorbing sun .

What is their lifespan excluding batteries?

Mine last about a year before they go dead. New batteries don't work.

None of the lids will go on right and one does not work. How do I contact seller?

My lids went on right. but two didn’t work. I complained thru Amazon to seller and they wanted me to send all twelve back BUt I already had them hanging up high in backyard trees with 12’ ladders. so I never got them replaced.

Are the solar inserts permenantly attached to the lid part, would I be able to take apart to spray paint the metal?

They do appear to be permanently attached. That is good though because there is a good seal around around the top of the solar cell and lid. In the hardest of rains, they have stayed bone dry inside. You could use masking tape to temporarily cover the solar cell area if you want to paint the metal part.
