A compelling read that keeps you guessing till the end
Lady of the Shades is Darren Shan's return to writing for adults. Shan is more well known for his children's series Cirque Du Freak and Demonata, but has previously written The City trilogy for adults and mature teens.Lady of the Shades is a standalone title and skirts the edges of a number of genres, making it an interesting and enjoyable piece with wide appeal. The Times lauded it as "Utterly unputdownble", an appellation or sentiment much overused in the marketing of books. It was, however, a very quick and enjoyable read for me.Apart from the prologue, the novel is delivered in the first person. It's a choice that I think works well if the author is trying to play on the possibility that the ghosts are just a figment of the protagonist's imagination or an indicator of their state of mind.I like stories that leave the reader unsure of the reality of ghosts and Shan performs a great balancing act with between the mundane and paranormal elements, to keep the reader on edge and guessing right until the last chapter.I thought I had the mystery figured out about three quarters of the way through the novel but Shan was practised enough to make me doubt myself and keep reading with a keen desire to know the ending. The action is fast paced and brutal the mystery elements well constructed. Whether you are a fan of crime, mystery or ghost stories it will be a compelling read. On the strength of this work I am inclined to check out Darren's other novels. This book was provided by the publisher at no cost to myself.

Disappointing
Utterly disappointing! I love Darren Shan's Demonata and Vampire series so expected more of the same emotional roller-coaster and suspense from his adult books. Sadly Lady of the Shades fell short on so many levels. The plot was weak. The dialogue bordering on immature, if not boring and the plot twists were pretty predictable if not rediculous. I feel bad giving such a poor review because Shan's teenage books are some of my favourite reads, full of intrigue, suspense and emotion. Lady of the Shades failed to provoke any intrigue or suspense and invoked very little emotion other than relief when I'd finally finished.Darren Shan can do so much better than this.

Fantastic, spooky thriller
I read this book after my daughter raved about Darren Shan's Cirque Du Freak series and I'm glad I did. The plot is so different and fresh - it leads you down one path then twists to throw you completely in another direction.I loved the fact that I wasn't sure if I liked the main character Ed and I couldn't make my mind up whether or not I wanted things to work out good or bad for him. This is a book for someone who likes thrillers with a hint of the supernatural, excellent characterisation and an amazing plot. Can't wait for another adult novel from Shan.

One word: amazing.
This book just blew. me. away! I am a huge fan of Darren Shan and although being in my 20's have read all his children's books ( and his more adult books) and absolutely loved them but this was defiantly Darren's best work yet. This book hooks you right from the beginning. I read this book in one sitting which is something i have never done before. Its action packed from the start and keeps you interested by the various twists that literally leaves you with your mouth open. I really hope Darren writes more of these types of stand alone books.

Brilliant
Not at all what I was expecting from Shan after all the fantastical gorey horror of his teen fiction but my goodness I am blown away. This book really has been a rollercoaster keeping you always on your toes unsure of the direction the story is taking or where it will end up. Where it does end up is so far removed from where Shan begins you will be surprised but in no way disappointed. Loved every minute. :)

"The City Trilogy" was my favorite for a long time
As a long time reader of Darren Shan, I thought I could predict all the tricks up his sleeves and keep one step ahead of him the whole way. I have never been so wrong... This book delivers twists, shock, eerie suspense and several "no way!" moments, and while i promised myself I would only read 50 pages at a time, I read the whole book in two sittings because it was impossible to put down. "The City Trilogy" was my favorite for a long time, but this book goes above and beyond expectations and has become a new favorite. I urge anyone to check it out :)
