Pretty good! Many images too small though.
I bought this book based on the reviews here, I thought the book was pretty good.My main problem was with the size of the images. Someone here said most images are one to a page, or two to a page... and that the smallest images are an inch by an inch.I'd expected all the images to be a lot bigger. Many of the images, maybe even 25% - 50% weren't much bigger than an inch by an inch. This is a real problem if you are looking at the book as an artist and want to see how the brushstrokes were made a little bit etc. at least on some of them. But the images were too small for this, and no detail views were shown (except a very smalll number at the start of each section).I found it really hard to look at all the small images and take in the painting properly too. Many were just too small for me.I'd rather have had less white space and 30% bigger images, this could easily have been done without sacrificing much text or design quality. (The cover art was awful too!)I also bought '1000 Masterpieces of European Painting: From 1300 to 1850' at the same time and this book was so much better at having larger images and showing details than this book (despite the book being far SMALLER and having far less pages than this one too!). It had a nicer feel too, the arrangement of the images and text was far less uniform than in this book and therefore much more interesting. It did have less white space but was actually far more elegant despite this. The selection of images seemed very good though (despite the bad graphic design of the book) and it was well-made. It weights an absolute TON but then it would!

He loved it. We spend time in Europe every year
I bought a copy of this at an art museum and then bought a second copy on Amazon for my brother for Christmas. He loved it. We spend time in Europe every year. What a great way to plan museum-going to include all the "must see" art work. This is obviously the author's choice of "must see" and I don't always agree with his choices but the book contains enough of the art that should be on everyone's list that it is a worthy companion. I plan to make a list every time I travel to make sure I don't miss an opportunity to see some of these paintings. It's a great way to see what pieces of art are in which cities and which museums ...not always easy to do.

A very worthwhile reference book
A beautiful overview what is considered the best/most important Western art (Europe, North America, some South America) in an easy to reference format. The book has a postcard sized color photo of the object on each page with a descriptive and interpretive essay about it. It's too big or me to to read and remember but it's an outstanding reference and pleasant browse on a rainy afternoon. My "used" copy was in excellent condition.

Amazing book!
This is a book that I had seen advertised in the National Gallery in London. Fortunately for me, I found this online at Amazon through a Goodwill store out of Florida. I was stunned that I was able to get this fabulous book for such little money. It is a perfect companion for anyone who would like to know the famous works of art and which museums these are housed in. The book gives an interesting insight to each and every piece of art. Very useful for any art lover. Also, the book is very good for anyone taking a college art history course.

Interesting To See What Is Out There....
I have just started to study art and find many of the same paintings in this list of paintings. What is sad is there is no way I will probably even see one tenth of the mentioned paintings during my lifetime. What is nice is to see what has been put together as being important and being able to read some about each painting. It would be nice if the paintings could be larger to study. I am glad I own it and I can use it as a starting point by seeing and reading what is offered and then I can Google or purchase other books to show larger pictures and give more explanations. I was able to purchase this book through an Amazon Used book seller.

MUST HAVE REFERENCE FOR ART STUDENT
Try putting the book on a book holder somewhere nearby and turn a page every day or so and take a moment to read the page. What an education!!! Worth the price for that student. Or for anyone interested for that matter.

Home schooling
Purchasing this book is like taking a yearlong course in the history of painting. The reproductions are excellent, the essays are filled with information, the paintings are not always the best known, but certainly are excellent examples of each artist's works. A definite purchase.

a treasure of art
I am so happy with my recent book purchase from amazon.ca. The book: 1001 Paintings You Must See Before You Die: Revised and Updated contains numerous quality painting reproductions of famous paintings...I enjoy looking at these paintings...they are so beautifully reproduced, and so exquisite...I recommend this book for art lovers and for people who have an appreciation of art...this book, which is so affordable thanks to amazon.ca, is a treasure for me...it allows me to see many paintings I have seen before but knew nothing about...now, I can see the reproductions in the book and read about them...it has been amazing for me to do this...a whole world of art has been opening up to me...I am learning things from this book that I wanted to know but never had the opportunity to do so...this book perfectly complements my art gallery membership...in the last few years, my local art gallery has been bringing famous paintings from Europe for special art exhibitions...I, now, can be knowledgeable about these famous paintings...
