Great little leash, and it's MADE IN USA. Thanks, Mendota!
(Note: I've worked as a professional dog trainer for the past 15 years.) YAY!!! This leash just WORKS in so many ways!!! Hooray and hats off to Mendota. (I bought three, I liked the first one so much: 1/2" x 4', 1/2" x 6', and 3/8" by 4'.) Here are some of the things I love about this leash: the rope is not stiff and scratchy (comfier for me AND my dog, as well as being easier on his coat), the fastenings seem really secure, the slider that keeps the collar part from slipping open is reassuringly snug, the leashes come in various widths and lengths, and they color options are pretty nice--something for everyone. I have a 50-pound Spaniel who can pull like the cutest freight train you've ever seen. Harnesses are problematic because (a) they alter his natural gait, and (b) they almost immediately create terrible knots in his "armpits." Martingale collars work pretty well with my dog, but he has wiggled around a couple of times when other people held his collar incorrectly and they basically let my dog slip out of his collar--YIKES!!! So, with some misgivings, I tried a slip lead (because he uses these in shows and rarely pulls in that context). The problem with slip leads, of course, is they just get tighter and tighter around your pulling dog's neck--not good at all!! Anyway, long story short, he seems to understand that when he's on a slip lead, he isn't supposed to pull--he simply doesn't do it. Would I recommend a sliplead for every dog? Of course not. But in the right setting, right dog, right handler, right positive training, right practice, etc., it can be a great tool. AND--it's great for those quick trips out into the yard at night while checking for critters! LAST POINT: the length INCLUDES THE NECK LOOP ("collar" part of the leash). so the 4' lead is really pretty short and will keep your dog right by your side. While you might want this in certain contexts, for everyday walking, I'd recommend the 6' length. And as far as width goes, the thicker the rope the fewer pounds per square inch of pressure on your dog's neck--so, the wider the rope, the comfier for your dog. The 1/2" width is a great middle-ground width for the vast majority of dogs; the narrower leash would be best for lighter dogs or those who don't pull terribly on a slip lead. A++ to Mendota Products for getting this product really right, and doing it in the USA! These leashes are FAR better than any other rope-type lead I've seen, which might look cool but aren't as functional as leashes.

You Will Love It!
I have worked with dogs for 28 years and this is honestly the best type of leash I have ever used. They are a slip type of lead, which makes it really very easy to get on your dog. If you have an excited pup you can make the head loop really big, and easily slip it over their moving head. (People who have struggled to clip a leash onto the collar of an excited, and ready to go pup will understand.) I have some arthritis in my hands and it's super nice not to have to struggle with clips. The lead has a nice soft, feel to it but is very sturdy . If your dog is a puller you can comfortably keep a good hold on him, and It also has a nice leather slide that allows you secure the neck loop from becoming to loose around your dogs neck. I mostly use the slide when i put my dog into the car so her bouncing around does not work the leash loose., but it also comes in handy if you just want to let them walk around with the leash on for a bit when your not quite ready to go. Being a slip lead it will tighten around your dogs neck if they pull to hard, but I have found that the soft material tends to encourage them slowing down, just like their pulling against a collar would. I also do very much like that this leash does not require a collar. While I strongly encourage a collar and ID whenever a dog goes out, the ease of just "loop and go" with this leash is really fantastic! The colors are also vibrant and great. I definitely recommend the 6' length, having found that the shorter one I bought is mostly left in the closet. Perhaps because with the longer it is much more easy to give your dog some extra length when he needs it, to potty and such, and then its very comfortable to hold more of the leash in your hands and shorten his field.. The 3/8 is great for small and medium dogs, and the 1/2 is best for big dogs like Labradors and such. I use the large for my Saint Bernard and the 3/8 for my Shih Tzu.

Love this leash!
I purchased this leash for my three-year-old Dachshund that weighs 18 pounds. I love to go on long walks with him and I sometimes let him go off leash when we are in more rural areas as he behaves very well. I was looking for a leash that was easy to slip on and off for this reason. My dog also slips out of his collar every now and then so I thought this would be a perfect fit for my needs. When used correctly, slip leads do not choke the dog and make handling dogs that may be not as great on a leash or are in training to walk on a leash nicely a lot easier. I would say this product is great for any dog owner who enjoys walking with their dog, whether they are fully leash trained or not. I see that it would be a great benefit to someone who wants more control of their dog, whether they are strong or big or both as the pressure the lead puts on when they pull is very effective, even with my small dog. I have great control using this leash and I would be very comfortable walking a large, strong dog with it. The smoothness of the lead is also a great attribute. I do not think I would get a rope burn if a large dog were to pull hard on it. Another great use of this leash would be for a rescue, as it is easy to slip leads on and off between dogs. The lead is a nice thick material that is very soft and smooth. It is tri-colored and I think the colors are so bright and fun and I see that the lead comes in other colors as well, even with different brands! The leather part that stops the lead from slipping too far back and is on the ends of both sides of the leash is very durable and has a great design to it. The whole leash itself is very durable and I think it will last me a long time. The ring that slips on the lead is a great size and it slips very easily which is great. The leash is also a great length, at 6 feet; I have no problem walking my Dachshund with it. I had a great experience with this company as it shipped very fast and I couldn’t be more pleased with this product.

Excellent Quality Leash
Excellent slip leash! This is my fourth Mendota leash and I love the design. Quality product. The others are years old and as good as the day they were purchased.

Great leash, too short!
I like the leash a lot in terms of looks, quality and function. However, it's just too short. I was actually looking for a short leash to practice walking with my dog near my side, but I quickly found out just how short this is. Say goodbye to letting your dog walk off a few feet to smell and go to the bathroom, you'll be basically standing right next to him/her while she goes. It's not the fault of the leash, I mean I am the one who bought this length. The leash overall is very high quality, but hopefully others will go with the 6 foot if they're all hesitate about the short length. Remember (what I didn't remember) - You can always shorten a longer leash by wrapping it around your hand, but you can't lengthen a short one. Rookie mistake. Another caveat, the little leather piece that is supposed to keep the leash tight on the neck always slides. We were hoping to use it to keep the leash up towards the top of her head, Cesar Milan style, but no such luck. It keeps it relatively tight (obviously it will stay on), but definitely won't keep it tight enough to stay up in position.

Great training leash, it has probably saved a few of my toes from frost bite!
We purchased this leash for a dog we adopted who had "darting" issues. Mostly he was a good walker but once he caught the scent of something he would book it right into the road or wherever to get to the smell. We were using a flexi-leash at first and that was just not doing it for us. He was also very impatient to get out to his runner and is much stronger than I am (my husband has an easier time hanging on to him than I do). If he saw a rabbit or squirrel he would just take off and there was no way I could keep a hold of his collar...on one occasion I chased him around the block through back yards in knee high snow with no shoes on...uncool. It took a few hours for my feet to thaw completely, so that was the deciding factor in purchasing this leash. It's so easy to slip over his head to guide him out to his runner in the yard without the possibility of escape. Once he's clipped on I can remove the lead quickly and let him get on to his pressing business, his poopie dance. When we use it for walks it has been a helpful training tool, the harder he pulls the tighter the lead becomes around his neck (humanely) so he has stopped pulling as hard. He's still a punk about squirrels, but he's a dog so I doubt this leash could do anything about that. I love the colors as well, Woodlands is a nice manly dog leash which was a requirement of my husband and he approves. So far it has taken a fair amount of abuse and is holding up well, seems like it is made of solid material and won't break any time soon.

Excellent leash for all sizes of dogs
Update 10/1/2015: I purchased a second leash since I loved the first one so much, and I discovered that not all styles are alike. My first leash was the orange color and uses a solid braid nylon rope, which means it uses strands made of a single material that all travel in the same direction and alternate between forming the outside and inside of the rope. It feels very solid and doesn't kink or stretch, and is quite comfortable to hold. The second rope I purchased was the "high-viz yellow" color and used a much different construction. This one has a diamond-braided (crisscross) sheath surrounding a core of some other material. The rope has a bit more stretch and tends to kink when twisted. It doesn't feel as as soft or flexible. If you look at the close-up images of the ropes, you can see the difference in design. Although both styles seem to be of very high quality, I highly prefer the leashes that are made with solid-braid rope rather than the diamond-braid models. From the images, the diamond braided ropes appear to be the yellow and the various "confetti" colors. ********** I love this leash! I volunteer with dog rescues and always take this leash with me when I work with the dogs, and of course I use it every day with my own dogs. I love that I don't have to be concerned about dogs with cheap collars or no collar - I just widen the loop to slip it right over the pup's head without causing distress and then use the leather slider to prevent it from loosening up. The lightweight rope is comfortable to hold and easy on the dog's neck, but very strong and not too stretchy. I use the 1/2" size on all sizes of dogs ranging from a 140 lb Newfoundland to a 3 lb terrier puppy and it always works great. The quality is excellent with strong stitching and a very solid feel. Highly recommended

Great leash, easy to use
I bought this because I do a bit of rescue work, and fairly regularly find myself catching lost dogs, so I wanted a good slip lead to replace the regular old clip on backup leash that I keep in my car to now use for those occasions. Well, I tried it out on my own dog, just to see how it worked. This leash is so convenient to use, and I am surprised by how much it seems to deter tugging, at least with my 33 pound, feisty terrier mutt. With his old leash that just clips onto his collar or harness, the minute it went on he’d start going nuts and pulling, excited to go outside. The first time I put the slip lead on, I expected the same reaction, but he didn’t do his normal excited zoomies and tugging! And after pulling just one time wearing the slip lead, he stopped immediately (without choking himself) and now it’s as if he knows his limitations, and walks nicely. The leash itself is well made, lightweight, easy to use, the material is surprisingly soft, and I like that there’s the added piece of mind with the leather slide so I know he won’t get loose. I also like the nice variety of colors available. It looks like I now have to purchase another of these to fulfill my original intentions for the random strays I find! 😊

Item is as advertised
This lead was recommended by our dog trainer and it lives up to expectations. Our dog is so much easier to handle and quickly responds to commands now.

Good training leash
The price online for this leash is way cheaper when compared to retail 'bricks & mortar' stores. This leash is exactly the same Mendota brand and colour that I was going to pick up in the store. It is superb quality, very easy to slip over the dog's head and works well to train your dogs to walk obediently. You can also use it as a walking leash if you have an obedient dog, but if you have a puller or a dragger, he/she is going to continue to pull unless you are constantly correcting the leash position on his/her neck. You may need a different leash in this case.

It’s ok
The leather stopper got loosen up pretty quickly and you’ll have to adjust it every other minute which can be very annoying. Otherwise the product is ok.
