Are you craving a way to eat killer food without killing yourself, animals, or the planet? Is your brain bloated from watching cooking shows that present recipes you’re never, ever going to make? Have you been searching for a way to prove to your friends that vegan food can be just as delicious, hearty, and satisfying as the meaty meals they’re accustomed to? Then this is the book for you. Of his journey from watching food porn on his parents’ couch to cooking in Hollywood kitchens to becoming vegan, author Brian Patton writes: My roommate said he didn’t know what made me a bigger loser: that I was painstakingly preserving episodes of 30 Minute Meals or that I was trying to conceal their existence by labeling them Star Trek.... Once I discovered that I could not only survive but thrive without taking the life of another being, I was sold. I was a vegan. For good. And that’s how an ordinary dude” became the Sexy Vegan and started creating extraordinary food” with a decidedly real-meal appeal. On every page, Brian proves that seriously good food needn’t be too serious. Review: Sexy indeed! - Who doesn't love a man with a great sense of humor?! Couple that with fantastic recipes and an insanely lovable writing style, and you have a winning cookbook. This is a book every vegan(except maybe the most reserved due to adult language) could appreciate and delight in reading. Every recipe is introduced by the writer in a fun and comical way, and I find myself laughing out loud as I read the intros. The recipes are fantastic and could meet anyone's approval. I appreciate the fact that he makes his own meat substitutes and is a real cook. The seitan recipe and all the things he shows you to do with it is a life-saver. I am already a well-seasoned cook, but I believe the recipes would be easy for any beginning cook or beginning vegan cook. Every new vegan should own this. It's super good food, with great entertainment on the side. All in all, completely satisfying! Review: I made some of the recipes, they were great! - For the record, I am not a vegan. I am not even a vegetarian, but this is still a great addition to a cookbook library. This will definitely be my go-to reference for meat substitutes (which I had never before been a fan of). Here's the breakdown so far. 1. Lasagna Fauxlognese = less prep work than you think given all of the individual components. Most just required mixing/blending. The fauxlognese sauce alone was EXCELLENT and I will certainly be making this again. The recipe was easy to follow and the ingredients were not hard to find. One tip, if using homemade noodles I would put sauce down as a first layer (they didn't quite cook all the way). This dish actually improves with time and re-heating, though you are not likely to have many leftovers! 2. Peanut butternut squash soup = also easy to make (my kitchen-challenged BF actually made this one all by himself). Again, this is now on our list of 'keeper' recipes. Watch out though, not all Sriracha sauce is vegan! 3. My balls = least favorite. I think there might be an error, should this be 8 oz of tempeh instead of 4? There was no way I was getting 10-12 (very wet) balls out of just 4 oz. I went ahead with 8 oz, but they just seemed less flavorful. 4. Beet down salad = what can I say, it's a salad. The only thing you really have to make is dressing, and it was pretty darn good. The key with these recipes are the seasonings. Brian does a great job of making things really flavorful. Again, I can't say enough good things about the fauxlognese sauce (not to mention the notzarella, which I want to put on everything I own!). Even if you don't want to make the full entrees, the components are fabulous for use in other dishes. My only complaint is with the physical book. It is a paperback and hard to keep open to reference while cooking (why do publishers to this?). I'm toying with the idea of having it re-bound with a spiral binding. If there is an e-book version available, that also might be worth considering.

Love this book!
I went plant based 3 months ago and the first few weeks of it were darn right hard. But, that was all unecessarily so. I wish I had had this book! This book has been a God send. The recipes are delicious not only for newbies like myself but for omni's too. This book has a lot of man and kid friendly food which I really appreciate. There a lot of recipes within recipes in this book. This seemed daunting to me at first but once I gave it a whirl, I see now why he set it up that way. For instance, I made the tater skinz the first night. I used 3 recipes to complete the meal (the tater skinz recipe, the sour creaminess, and the smoky cheeze). I opted for the pre-marinated tempeh at the market to avoid the 4th recipe. Anyway, it really didn't take that much effort (i.e. no more then 30 minutes as I nuked the potatoes), but it made a ton and I was able to use the leftover sour cream and cheeze throughout the week. Infact, I used the left over cheeze sauce to make mac n'cheese the next night in the time it takes to boil and drain the noodles!. I think we can all appreciate a quick meal once in a while! I had high blood pressure and was looking for ways to deal with it without medication and adopting a vegan lifestyle has been the answer for me. I'm officially OFF blood pressure medication! And I love Brian's book. His recipes are great for newbies. They are phenomenal AND healthy! I have made a few of my own personal modifications to some of the recipes, reducing the salt in several because I have grown used to less salt, but otherwise, the book is very solid. I have yet to fail with the book!

Vegan never tasted so sexy
First off, I read this entire cookbook cover to cover before dog earing or bookmarking recipes I was interested in trying. I could not stop laughing, his humor is crass, quick and a little dirty, and that's just how I like it. He truly does show you that all vegans are not uptight, self righteous and do in fact have a sense of humor (well, at least some of us do). I have not yet used the scan codes in the book, but I do look forward to eventually checking them out. Our favorites thus far have been: My Balls: I love his balls. I love them slathered, I love them stuffed in a bun and I love them nude. What can I say, his balls are excellent. Cauliflower and Roasted Fennel Soup: This soup has just a nice, delicate flavor. The roasted fennel is a perfect touch. Et Tu, Tempeh?: This salad. I want to eat it everyday for the rest of my life. I don't think I'd suffer any adverse reactions by doing so (except maybe a touch of scurvy), so I might give it a go. The Girlfriend's Favorite Salad That She Constantly Asks Me to Make and Wont Shut the Hell up About: His girlfriend is a smart girl. I'm not typically a hearts of palm kind of girl, but if you can find some ethically sourced, make this salad. The S.I.L.F.: I have not had relations with this sandwich. Ok, I lied. This one is delicious, plus you really can't go wrong with the addition to poblanos anywhere. The Portly Fellow: Roasted veggies at their finest. Black Bean Burger with Kajillion Island Dressing: So, if you are vegan (or vegetarian) the black bean burger is no stranger, but make no mistake, this is not your average bb burger. The incorporation of adobo and tortilla chips are purely genius. Not Yo Mama's Cheeze Sauce: I literally could eat this with a spoon. I typically am not a nooch fan, but he makes it edible. I haven't tried that many recipes, but the ones I have tried thus far are more than delectable. I will be using this cookbook for many, many more moons to come.

Low budget - SO MANY BETTER BOOKS OUT THERE
OK- but really low budget, few photos, and none in color. Glad I bought it used. No my favorite. Sloppy writing too.

Great for the novice healthy eater!
So at my annual physical my doctor tells me that my cholesterol is too high, and I need to start eating healthier. He recommends that a good way to start is eating a few vegan meals per week. Per reviews I've read on here, I decide to order this cookbook. Turns out to be one of the best purchases I've ever made! Not only are Brian Patton's recipes delicious and easy to make for the novice cook, but his passages are extremely humorous. He makes cooking fun. The first thing I made was The Seared Hearts of Palm Salad, which was phenomenal. Then I moved on to some of the other recipes and have yet to be disappointed. The Bourbon Tempeh Sliders are a great, healthy alternative to the fast food burgers I used to love. Some of my other favorites include the Lasagna Fauxlognese, the Jambalaya, and The Pretend Italian Sausages. And the best news yet: after eating about 5 or 6 of these meals per week for the past six months, I have lost 22 pounds! Hoping that Brian Patton releases another cookbook soon!

Fun to read, some recipes are too complicated
i think this is a great book for certain personalities and lifestyles. the author is so entertaining and the recipes are well-planned and properly referenced. the reason i gave it only 4 stars is because i am a vegan who don't like to use a lot of meat substitutes and i prefer to cook in a way that is simple and that doesn't dirty up too many dishes (yes, i am lazy!) the ingredient lists are a little long, which is great for the chef-types and for cooking hobbyists, but of less interest to those who just want to whip something up in a hurry, without too much planning. the best part of the book for people looking for more "simple" recipes is the sauces and seasonings section. here, the ingredients lists are easy and the recipes can be used to dress up your standard grain/bean/veggie/whatever dishes. overall, the book seems to try to create the feeling and sensations of non-vegan foods, which is good for some people who are trying to make the transition to vegan. like i said, for the right person, this book would be perfect.

Not a full fledged vegan, but still a fan
Brian knows how to entertain. From his fantastically funny youtube videos to clever intros of his various inventive drinks and foods Brian Patton has slowly begun to convert me to a lifestlye that includes the occasional vegetarian dish. The inclusion of QR codes (if you don't know what they are, buy the book and read the intro) allow quick and easy access to demonstrations on a good amount of his various recipes. Already tried out the pretend sausage and peppers pizza and was impressed with the texture and flavor. A delicious meal that easily fools the senses. The inclusion of cocktails in a cookbook is brilliant and the Numbskull (with a hibiscus based syrup) lived up to its name. You could easily debate how sexy he is based on his pictures, but his cookbook will be a turn on for anyone that enjoys cooking their own meals, a healthier lifetyle, and hates having to follow convoluted and confusing directions.

Schnelle Lieferung. Interessantes Buch.

Love love love this book
Great recipes, great ideas, imaginative and informative and fun. The tofu scramble mix alone will change your life - fried tofu "egg" sandwiches again! This book is highly recommended. Use it all the time.

Seems like a good book if you can get the ingredients
Have had this book for quite a while now, but haven't made anything from it as it is American and not all the ingredients are easily available here. You're probably OK with it if you live in London, where I imagine any ingredient will be easily found. Many of the recipies look interesting though.

Good 'normal' vegan food!
Bought as a present for my sister. I like that the food isn't all 'healthy sprouted mung beans' like a lot of vegan food is. It's also a very funny read.
