The Children's Step-By-Step Cook Book

Good Resource, When Not Lost In Translation
Let me first start out by saying that I LOVE the concept of this book and it has worked well so far, but I've found a few things in the book that I would like to bring to the attention of prospective buyers.I bought this book because I wanted to instill a love of cooking into a 7-year-old boy, in the process teaching him valuable life skills instead of forever expecting mother/wifey/girlfriends to do things for him. This is a great starter book because of the step-by-step picture directions, but please realize that kids will not be able to cook much in this book without a ton of help. Why? Because as a foreign book (UK), this follows foreign vernacular and sometimes the pictures do not match what the written directions are showing. For example, this book shows a picture of what looks to be a zucchini and calls it a "courgette." This could be confusing if the child wants to be responsible for picking out items from the produce section of a market in America. Also, on the beef casserole recipe, it has written instructions to set the OVEN to 180C/350F, but then proceeds to give written and picture directions for STOVE TOP cooking. Also, and as expected, this book has a few food items that may be popular in the UK, but are usually not eaten much in the USA, such as a curious item in the "treats" section that looks like fruit cake but is cleverly disguised under the heading of "Biscuit Cake." What are referred to as "pancakes" in this book are commonly called "crepes" in America. All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to teach a child how to cook real food, and not just grilled cheese sandwiches. But I also recommend that a caregiver has the time available to teach and help with EACH STEP of the cooking process for these recipes, from deciding what to cook all the way through to the end of the meal preparation. This might not be the right book to have if you expect your sixth-grade babysitter to cook dinner alone for the kiddies. But might it be the right book to teach valuable life skills under tutelage that has the time and patience to help out EVERY STEP OF THE WAY? Absolutely.

Very informative and creative
Very cute and informative. Cute and creative ideas for making dishes that I as parent wouldn’t come up with on my own. Also, fairly simple enough so that my 7yr old can help in preparing these dishes as well.

Quality, user-friendly book
This DK cookbook was printed on high-quality glossy paper and illustrated with gorgeous photographs. Each cooking process is broken down into steps, photos and instructions accompany the photos. A child of nine or ten could use the cookbook on his or her own, but younger kids will need adult help. The recipes are tasty, do not include exotic ingredients, take only a few steps to complete, and are appeal to kids and adults. The book includes information on kitchen tools as well as processes. For example, you can learn the difference between dicing something and grating it. All in all, this cookbook makes an excellent choice for a novice cook.

Nice illustrations and easy instructions
My girlfriend saw this book in the library and wanted her own copy. The price was fantastic when you don't mind used. It shipped quickly and was packaged well. She likes how there are pictures for each step. She is a terrible cook, bless her heart. She's messed up Minute Rice, Hamburger Helper, and even toast. The easy instructions and the pictures help her cook a non-toxic meal that doesn't have the fire alarm squealing.

International Flavor
Personally, I like the book but it is a book from England and we live in the United States. The recipes are not our norm nor do they call food and cooking items by our names. That said it is a wonderful way to teach cultural differences. There are not as many recipes as I would like. I am still happy with my purchase and would recommend it for the international flavor!

Good book and doesn't require buying any pre made mixes home made recipes with ingredients I have on hand
The best thing I love about this cook book is that it don't say go out and buy a box of this or that pre made mixes. These recipes can be made with basic ingredients that I usually keep in my pantry. The recipes are pretty simple to follow and show ways to make them creative. My kids enjoy it I would recommend the book, book arrived in good packing in a timely manner. Book was in good shape just as description stated.

Definitely not for adults...
This book is what it is meant for, Twitch the cooking part of a child's brain. Clear and easy recipes with pictured instructions. All recipes are non-Indian and definitely need to roam around to find most of the ingredients.

Better late than Never (but better never late)
Bought as a Christmas present for my niece's children. Rather spoiled by Amazon Ca taking two months to deliver it to Toronto! I think the children like it.
