Marcello: Sonata in E minor Op. 1 No. 2 for Bass and Piano

I prepared this piece as a senior in high school and found it to be plenty challenging. The highest note is an A above the staff if I'm remembering correctly, but the majority of the piece is right in the 4th/5th position range. It's a great workout playing E minor all over the instrument, something I definitely wasn't accustomed to before this, and the variations in tempo, style, and meter throughout the piece provide a lot of opportunity for different expression. I would rank it as an intermediate to high difficulty, definitely manageable, but can always be made more difficult by kicking the fast movements up. I was very pleased with it.

I am a professor of music and I have all my double bass students learn this piece early in the studies. They all love this piece!

Great work! Perfect for auditions and a must for any repertoire of the serious bassist. I bought this for my son's audition into college.
