does it work for gear oil

Yes it will pump gear oil. I use it to lubricate my motorcycle chain.

Can this be shaken without leaking?

The concern would be where the plunger pin goes through the lid to connect to the piston. There is a seal on the pin, but it is not a real tight seal because of the way it operates. You will probably get some leaking if you shake the oiler, especially with lower viscosity fluids.

Can this be used from all angles (e.g. upside-down) or does it need to be straight in order for the oil to pump?

Thanks for your question! Because this 625 is a pistol pump oiler, oil has to be in the pump for it to function properly, so using it upside down will probably not work. If you need to use an oiler upside down, we would recommend using one of our spring bottom oilers, such as the 505 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000AYDXJQ).
