Porsche - Origin of the Species is the latest Porsche heritage book by renowned automotive historian Karl Ludvigsen, author of the award-winning Porsche: Excellence Was Expected and Ferdinand Porsche Genesis of Genius. Within Jerry Seinfeld's renowned Porsche collection resides an unassuming yet extraordinary piece of Porsche history: Porsche Gm nd coupe 356/2-040. Captured exclusively for this book in a series of evocative portraits by acclaimed automotive photographer Michael Furman, 040s unsullied originality conveys with startling immediacy the combination of artistry, innovation and determination that went into its improbable creation. The saga that emerges encompasses mechanical revelations, human drama and the turmoil of world war. Porsche - Origin of the Species will appeal to all car enthusiasts who are eager to know what events really ignited the spark from which all other Porsches evolved. Review: 1st class historical and technical bible told with all available documents and photos. - This book is an excellent historical story of the Porsche Brand. It details who the founders were, how the company developed from the founders to present, and how they became aurguably the top performance sport luxury automobiles to date. Historical information is provided with historical documents and photos of the people and engineering documents of the progression of the company product to present day. A first class historical story of what is now aurguably the finest performance car in history. A must have for any enthusiansts' libray and or Coffee table. Review: An excellent read - As always, Ludvigsen does not disappoint. With a writing style complimentary of the Porsche thought process, he examines every detail in well-delivered prose and is unrelentingly thorough in his analysis. This book is a helpful focus of the beginning of the marque with information gleaned from his four volume masterwork, Excellence Was Expected, together with new information, private contemporary studies of original cars and interviews with other current experts. It is a worthy and unique companion to the larger series.

Not Deja Vu
I am pretty sure I have most of the books written about Porsche in the last 60 years. Many of those books are, disappointedly, remixes of others. It is hard to believe that there is anything new to be learned about the early development of Porsche cars. This book is certainly new and refreshing as it contains information and photographs about early Porsche development that I have not seen in included in any other books. The book is well formated and logically organized. The photos and drawing included are large and clear. 350 pages of intersting reading. Of course, the fact that it was written by Karl Ludvigsen, "Excellence Was Expected," makes it even more classic. A "must have" for a 356 enthusiast.

You will not be disappointed
I was reluctant to order this book. Another tomb to weigh down my book shelve. As it turns out I am glad that I did order it. As a two time Porsche owner, I have also assembled a large collection of books on Porsche with particular emphasis on the business side of the firm. This book is simply outstanding. There are a great deal of photos and information that I have not seen before. Yes, I know: it is expensive, it is big, it is heavy. Buy it anyway, you will not be disappointed.

it is all in the details
I've read and thumbed through this book numerous times since purchased. I like the historical narrative of the pre-356 history that is properly documented now. I've recommended a few friends to acquire a copy for their own research libraries.

Just brilliant...
Coveted this book for a long time after I read parts of it at my mechanics, (*also marked the first time I wished it took longer to service my car). Best 356 book out there, the history/detail is unmatched. Simply buy it if you are a fan!
