Newhouse Hardware ORB5WL Lighted Doorbell Button, 1-Pack, Oil-Rubbed Bronze

All those darn pesky door to door salespeople ringing my doorbell finally did my original doorbell in and it was time for a replacement. Home Depot didn't have any so I ordered it from here since it looked exactly like the one I had. Arrived fast and in good condition....and easy to install.....although it would help if you didn't have large sized clumsy hands as the parts are quite small and need a bit of care to handle. For all those who say this is a cheap piece of junk, it's not. Yes, it's made up of various loose pieces that need to be assembled together before the final step of inserting it into the wall, but once it's in, it looked as good as new and fit into the wall perfectly. Project doorbell replacement, happily done.

We purchased this to replace an existing gold doorbell that would not light anymore, and it was not ringing half the time. It was the same size as the other, so installation was a breeze. I think the color looks better in person than it did in the photos online. The price was in line with competitors. Thicker more durable feeling, than our previous doorbell. The button does stay lit constantly and it is bright. It is warm to the touch, but it doesn’t seem to be an issue.

Our house uses this round style doorbell with pushbutton activation - after many years of wear and tear the mechanical parts stopped functioning. Checking all the major home improvement stores turned out to be futile, I could only find the small rectangular type which would not fit my application, and I didn't want to install an electronic doorbell since we already have a perfectly functioning Outdoor Blink camera which works great. So I ordered this item hoping it would be an easy replacement, turns out I was wrong. When I took the doorbell out of the plastic bag it seemed to be fine, and appeared to be a good form/fit/function for my busted one. Once I started unscrewing the screws in order to wire it in, that's when the parts started to fall apart - there are essentially three functional pieces (I don't count the round plate or the bracket): the pushbutton itself, the small bulb, and the housing which is supposed to hold the bulb and interface with the pushbutton. Well, as some reviewers have noted, those three pieces just fall apart. You can put everything back in its place but when you try and wire it up and push it back into the stucco hole, it won't hold. This is totally unlike the broken doorbell I have - even though it is broken, the entire doorbell holds together as a single unit. I shouldn't have to figure out how to epoxy or otherwise keep all the pieces together in order to install it. Funny thing is that is comes with a sticker that says, "QC passed". After reading the reviews here, I am led to believe that there are two different kits that are being shipped: one which holds together, and one which falls apart. Needless to say, I'm in the second camp and am returning it ASAP, and hoping my replacement will be better - going to look for another brand, though. Update: I bought a Nu-tone version of this doorbell which only came in a silver polish as opposed to the more attractive rubbed bronze. I noticed that the design was pretty much identical, except the two-prong metal bracket, which is needed to hold the doorbell in place, gripped more tightly on the housing compared to this Newhouse. The Newhouse bracket was loose and allowed the housing to freely rotate/come loose, and the tension on this bracket is the only thing that keeps the housing in place. So now I know, the variability in reviews is likely due to how tightly the bracket grips onto the plastic housing, and this is not something you can adjust. You might get lucky and that bracket will grip just fine, or you might get unlucky like me.

While it looks great, the installation is difficult. The screws are really small and the housing does fall apart like the other reviews state. Just be patient. It looks really nice after all the hassle. And the light stays on. Just FYI.

This is a quality product that you can't find at most home improvement or hardware stores.

Despite all the bad reviews, I went ahead and got one just because I was too lazy to go to my local Home Depot. Reviews were correct that this thing falls apart during installation. The front half and back half will separate when you unscrew the terminals. I found that holding the back half (white piece) with pliers while loosening the screws help. This should also help prevent the white piece from breaking. Do the same when tightening the screws. Hold the white piece so you don’t put stress on the little hooks which is what most showed breaking. Keeping it together is nearly impossible to do when you try to get it into the hole. It will at one point or another, fall apart. Just don’t lose the bulb when it does. The spring clip will also loosen from the housing and button as well. But when you push the button into the hole, everything should tighten up. Overall, a little frustrating to keep all the pieces together but it works. Will replace with a better one when the plastic eventually break. I don’t expect it to last long.

If your doorbell isn’t working it might be as easy as replacing your doorbell with something like presented here. If you are handy with tools and you have a multimeter check for a minimum of 10 volts AC at the wire contacts first (You will see once you pull out the doorbell). Polarity doesn’t matter. If you have 10 volts AC or more you are good to go!. If there is no reading or (ie 0.001 volts AC) then you need an electrician. Cheers

Was hesitant with all the bad reviews but I had no issue with the screws, just hold the white base before unscrewing. Easy install and was exactly what I needed at a great price to replace my old one which still worked but had a dead light. The bronze finish is a bit strange with small bumps but no big deal.

2 out of 3 of these did not complete the circut and when we took it out they feel into pieces. Ended up at the local hard ware store and purchased $5 ones and they work perfect.
