Great Women Artists

This is not an exhausted list of women artists and you might not find all your favourites - but it's not meant to be. What it does do is show that women have been contributing to every major movement and moment in art history and that their work is frequently at least as talented/thought-provoking as many of the vastly more famous male artists. I have found at least three new artists that I love that I was completely unaware of before - much to my shame. I would highly recommend this to any art or history lover - the brief descriptions of the artists' lives are sometimes just as interesting as the art. Aside from being an excellent example of how (women) artists have been written out of history, it's a great quality art book - the pictures are all very clear and the paper is of sufficient quality to show them well.

I ordered a used copy for a bargain price and wasn't overly optimistic about what I would receive - my copy arrived from Germany in 4 days and looked totally brand new. Very impressed!

Really good book. I ordered from amazon and it arrived damaged but couldn't be bothered returning because the book is so good. Wide scope of female artists, brilliant reprodutions, and interesting commentary

Beautiful book showcasing Women in art.Highly recommended.

I received this book as a present and although at first glance it can appear daunting by its physical size and scope (400 female artists are covered), I was pleasantly surprised by the effective way the subject matter was explained and dissected.The comprehensive introduction, which highlights the many issues barring women throughout history from becoming well known, or even being able to study art, to the way women are judged and the current rebalancing efforts was insightful and wide-ranging.While I haven’t been through the whole book page by page, this is not how the book is intended to be used. I am certainly enjoying dipping in and out of it, to learn more about individual artists and with the help of the glossary, which places the artist in the accompanying art-historical movement, I feel inspired to delve deeper and explore more.‘Great Women Artists’ certainly has the feel of a really important document which will inform and inspire art history debate for many years to come.

Not as good as I thought, I felt dissatisfied and disappointed. I’m not keen on the design of the book, from the front cover to the layout throughout the book. I felt the selection of female artists were ok but could have been more diverse. I’m possibly just comparing it to other incredibly beautiful art books which I have recently bought.

This book should be banned under the Trade Description Act.It professes to describe 400 “Great” women artists over the last 500 years.It is neither.Admittedly it HAS 400 entries. Most of them (about 300) are from the post war (WW2) period and almost half of them are from the English speaking part of the world.Conceptual “art” seems to dominate the proceedings. So we have three plates with tents – one of them from the guru of the conceptual art our very Tracey Emin. Then we have another piece named Hymenoplasty which just shows a woman spread on a gynaecology operating table with her bits covered by towel and nothing else. Suppose very easy to guess the name of the “work”.Another piece shows a chandelier made up from tampons – thankfully not previously used.Needless to say that tampons are more important than for example the marvellous Last Supper by Plautilla Nelli which can be admired in the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella in Florence and whose author is not included together with many other truly great female artists.The only redeeming feature of the book is that the editors unwittingly have managed to include a few works of interest.

Every artist should by this all female artist book the Jensen book I used in college to learn art history in 1986 had no female artists in the world book of every artist in history sad book had no female artists in books but thousands very great female artists were working making great art even making art for men sign their names too buy this book great value love it

A wonderful book covering circa 5 centuries of women artists. A must have.

This is a comprehensive book of over 400 contemporary and historical women artists. Beautiful pictures and a tad of information about each artist.
