One of the best things I did for my lawn in the last 20 years
For most of the last 40 years I have at least attempted every year to improve the grass coverage at the family cottage. Most of the "lawn" is covered by 100+ year old white pines. The soil is glacial till (mixed pockets of sand, clay and gravel). Adding to the challenge is I have no irrigation, other than hose and sprinkler, and only intermittent occupancy so no regular watering. I also had limited time (weekends) and funds (<$200/year) to do any improvements) With those limitations in mind most of my efforts have been raking pine needles, fall seeding (looking for best growers) and fertilizing. It also turns out that my cousin was "helping" by adding lime and a winterizer (with weed preventer). About 15 years ago I found some empty bags of lime and did a soil Ph test. I found the soil is not acidic despite the Pine trees and got my cousin to stop the lime. It took another 5 years to find out about the winterizer and get him to stop that as well. After those changes I could get grass to grow but most of it would not come back the following year or would thin and die off After seeing some videos touting the wonders of humic acid and the ease of just spreading it with a spreader I gave this stuff a try. I spread it heavy at the end of summer, the bag says it will do 40000 sq ft but I used it all on 17000. I applied milorganite at the same time at its usual concentration. To be honest I really did not notice a huge difference right away (it may have even looked worse) but by the time I was ready to do the fall seeding the grass had thickened a bit (instead of continuing to thin) and looked much healthier in general. The following year almost everything that was growing in the fall came back in the spring. I applied more of the Humic DG and doubled the milorganite the following summer (I read somewhere the Humic acid can cause the applied nitrogen to get stored in the soil instead of being available to the plants. This seems to be true). This time I saw almost immediate improvements after the application and started to see seed growth in areas that had been perennially bare. I did a third year and continued to see improvement especially in the full sun areas as the soil seems to absorb and retain more moisture. In the years since I have periodically reapplied the product and have seen improvement each time. That said the product is expensive and needs repeated applications to actually change the soil over a multi year long timeframe. The quicker solution would probably have been to bring in black dirt but not really sure how that would have affected the trees. Overall I am happy with the product. I just wish it was cheaper.

Highly recommended
Ive been trying for more than a decade to get a perfect lawn. Home here in Dallas area has mix of St Augestine and bermuda. Previous owners clearly did nothing to keep up with the lawn. I finally had irrigation installed after years of dragging hoses in futile attempts to deal with hot dry summers. Soil is hard black clay. Last year i hit upon applying humic acid using liquid mix and tow sprayer. This year i found humicdg which has much higher concentration of humic acid and is cheaper than the spray mixes. First spring application i applied gypsum, humicdg, milorganite and regular weed and feed. Its only April and yard has never looked better. Humicdg will now be applied twice a year along with my other amendments. Highly recommended

Early Impressions on The Andersons Humic DG Soil Amendment - A Hopeful Green Investment
As a gardening enthusiast constantly on the lookout for products that enhance soil health and plant vitality, I decided to try The Andersons Humic DG soil amendment. With its promise of improving soil structure, increasing water retention, and providing essential nutrients, it seemed like a worthwhile addition to my gardening regimen. Here are my initial thoughts and experiences with this product. **First Impressions:** Upon incorporating The Andersons Humic DG into my garden, the first thing I noticed was the ease of application. The granular form dispersed evenly and integrated well with the existing soil, making the process seamless and efficient. Early indications are positive - the soil appears more robust and fertile, suggesting that the amendment is beginning to work its magic. **Observations on Soil and Plant Health:** In the short time since application, there seems to be an uptick in the overall health and appearance of my plants. The soil retains moisture more effectively, which is a boon during the dryer spells, reducing the need for frequent watering. While it's still early days, the promising start gives me hope that I'll see continued improvement in soil condition and plant growth. **Long-Term Prospects:** Gardening is a game of patience and long-term results. While the immediate effects of The Andersons Humic DG soil amendment are encouraging, the true test will be its impact over the current growing season. I'm optimistic but also realistic that time will tell if this product delivers on its promise of significantly enhancing soil health for better plant vitality and yield. **Customer Experience:** The purchasing process was straightforward, and the product arrived in good condition, with clear instructions for use. It's too early to speak to The Andersons' customer service regarding this product, but the initial experience has been positive. **Conclusion:** Based on my early experiences, The Andersons Humic DG soil amendment seems to be a promising product for gardeners looking to improve their soil's health and efficiency. I am hopeful about the long-term benefits and plan to update this review after the current season to share whether it has been a good investment for sustained garden health and productivity. **Anticipated Update:** Look forward to my follow-up review, where I'll provide insights into the long-term effectiveness of The Andersons Humic DG soil amendment. Good company. Easy to use product. Good bang for buck.
I am a novice lawncare enthusiast. I do not have 30 years of experience, but that makes me willing to try what is new. With my not so great New Jersey soil this is a key solution. The alternatives to this product are get an annoying product you have to mix and spray or bring in top soil....Obviously, this is a win. I have had very good luck with Andersons products when I first started getting serious about my lawn. The big box stuff was very underwhelming and very expensive. I find it better to buy Andersons, have it shipped to my door and know I'm not wasting my time. I put down this product for my small lawn (5000 sq ft). This bag is good enough for a summer. Humic acid is the future, helps with the clay and the garbage fill soil they made my lawn with and the results are surprisingly quick. I can tell the lawn is thicker and greener even after a few months of treatment. I kept the other parts of my lawn care ritual pretty much the same. This is hard to quantify, but I feel there is much value in this product. All I can say is try it. Def get a soil test before starting, will help with everything.

Working great on our clay soil!
2021 update: Humic is one of the few lawn care products I still use religiously. It’s an absolute necessity for a healthy Bermuda lawn here in North Texas, and I stand by it 100%. I don’t mess with most of the other products folks push (outside of Super Juice occasionally), but this stays in my rotation. My go-to program includes: Scotts Annual Program Humic DG Prodiamine (for pre-emergent control) Negate (for Poa annua control) Super Juice (as a light foliar feed) With this combo, I’ve had zero weeds this year—and my Scag Cheetah II mower’s mulching blades even struggle to keep up with the density of the grass. It's thick, dark, and beautiful. ✅ Product Performance: Took just one 40lb bag in my Agri-Fab spreader to cover my ½ acre front lawn, with some product left over Easy to spread, no clumping, dissolves cleanly Breaks up compacted soil, enhances nutrient uptake, and improves water retention Noticeable results when paired with a solid fertility plan 💡 I’m following a custom program I discuss often on my YouTube channel @LawnandOrderTexasEdition, where I also show how this has helped me reclaim my lawn from years of bad service from a careless spray company. Honestly, it’s still better priced than most big-box store options and blows them out of the water in performance. If you're serious about building soil health and improving long-term turf quality — Humic DG is non-negotiable. Love it, recommend it, and I’ll keep using it.
