How do you mix the lather? Do you take some of the substance out and mix it in a seperate container for a single use or just add water to your brush and mix it in the container it comes in?

Never mix lather in the cream bowl, use any bowl or mug, your free hand, or even the lid. I take my badger brush that's been soaked in the sink, shake off the excess water and gently dab my badger brush into the bowl of cream, you need very little cream on the brush so minimal water gets in, and this is less wasteful than using fingers, I then mix up my lather in an old empty TOBS bowl. From scratch you can whip up a nice creamy lather in about 30-60 seconds.

I'll add a little bit here, even though some of the answers already have good info in them. I agree with Samantha and JM, but my Jermyn Street didn't really smell like Old Spice much.  I'll add a few things that it is not, and maybe that will be of some help.  It's not overly musky and earthy.  It's not heavily floral (better not be, for a man's fragrance).  It's not heavily soapy, like Ivory.  It's not overly citrus, to where someone says, "you smell like lemon meringue pie".It's really a fairly sophisticated mix of some of those, that's very well-thought-out.  I took a look at the "fragrance wheel" on Wikipedia and would say that this is mostly in the "clean/fresh" category, with a little bit of woody and floral thrown in to balance it out just a bit.  I'm no expert, but this is my guess...Fresh/Green/Citrus: 75% Floral: 15%Woody: 10%While it does have some florals, I'd guess, it's predominately fresh and balances out into a masculine scent.  I feel sure there is a men's cologne out there, and maybe several, that smell just like it.And like has been said, this one is not a strong scent, only lingering (at least for me) for about 30 mins after the shave, and never overpowering.

I have used this for about 20 years. Great product that seems to last for ever. Only reason it does not gets reviews is that we boomers do not bother and use word of mouth.

If you had to pick between st james, eton college, and jermyn st - which one would you pick? im trying to explore new tobs options. thank you.

St James, then Eton College, then Jermyn St.  St. James has the best lather, smell and is better with a sophisticated  life style ~ I wish they'd make a soap and shave balm for it. Eton College is overall excellent as well and can be paired nicely with Calvin Klein Euphoria or 4711 cologne & soaps. Jermyn is great to cycle into your rotation, is mild on skin, and overall fantastic and there's a complete line for it by Taylor of Old Bond Street. Really all three of these are like choosing from a Bently, Austin Martin or a Rolls Royce, which one you're feeling like for that week really is the only issue. I tend to change my TOBS shave/shower products every week or two and have for years now.
