This stuff is great! I just recently started wetshaving with a double edge safety razor and at first I just used Witch Hazel and Clubman Pinaud aftershave lotion. I still use both of those but after being highly recommended to me by several people I picked this up as well. It is DEFINITELY worth it! Being a beginner I'm still learning the proper technique and I was getting some irritation and even some "razor bumps". The witch hazel and aftershave helped a bit, as well as some facial moisturizer, but adding the Alum block to my regiment helped a LOT today! I just received it and tried it after shaving today and instantly felt a difference. I was told it also lets you know how you are shaving, if you rub it on your face afterwards and you feel some slight burning it means you weren't using good technique and you should adjust your angle and pressure. I did pretty well today with my DE razor and didn't feel any burning so that's good! I did have one small nick on my chin and it stopped the bleeding instantly. Before I recieved this the past couple shaves left my face very irritated and dry, even some dry skin peeling off in places. It's now been about 7 hours since my last shave using this and my face feels super soft and smooth with zero irritation. I'm sold! Everything I was told about this stuff is true so far, it is great! Just wet the block and rub it on your face, it soothes the razor burn and will stop any bleeding almost instantly in case you nicked yourself. I have a Clubman styptic pencil as well for cuts but this stuff works just as well and doesn't burn quite as much, plus you can use this stuff all over your face instead of just for cuts/nicks. The styptic pencil is also white and leaves a white residue on your face while this is clear and not noticeable. From what I've read these things last for YEARS. You just rub the block and barely use any, so paying the $8 is a good investment. There was a slightly cheaper and smaller block here on Amazon but it did not have a case. I'm kind of a neat freak and I like everything organized so the case is totally worth it! The Razorock brand Alum block has a case as well but it is more expensive and is only 3.2oz vs the 3.7oz this one is. Based on my research this is the best deal here on Amazon for an Alum block with case, plus the Gentleman Jon artwork/logo is really cool! I'm a huge fan of the vintage/retro styling. I've also read some people use this as a natural deodorant, I may try that in the future because I'm trying to be healthier and reduce the amount of chemicals in products I use. Since I'm using this one on my face though I'm gonna have to get a second one for that purpose, I wouldn't want to use this on my armpits and then on my face hah! TL;DR: Great quality, great case, great results, great value. If you get skin irritation from shaving, start using this after shaving!

I am fairly new to wet shaving with double edged safety razors. I recently decided to up my game and bought a number of new items to add to my shaving routine; this was one of them. Along with a decent safety razor, shaving brush, shaving cream, and a bowl for building lather, this product complements it all perfectly. I tried this product for the first time today after a two pass shave with a Merkur safety razor and Proraso rinfrescante shaving cream. I could feel it working and absorbing into my skin. I had some minor irritation on my neck from shaving against the grain, but using this block soothed the burning immediately. I also had one small nick which the block took care of too. I originally thought this product wouldn’t be of much use to me. I would normally just rinse with water and apply aftershave. I’m glad I bought his product and will continue to use it every time I shave. It’s a really nice way to finish off a close shave and it feels good too.

My dad always used a styptic pencil for a cut when shaving but I never knew anything about an Alum Block until reading and researching more about the art of a great shave. I find this Gentleman Jon 3.7 Ounce Alum Block a must after every shave. No the alum block is not the exact same as a styptic pencil but in my case I like it better as it will heal a small cut and you can feel it tighten the skin on my face. It's a perfect ending for a perfect shave. I use this block in conjunction or just prior to good after shave and then some talc but I find this alum block will replace a aftershave if in a hurry. I love the included plastic case as an alum block needs protection as a drop in the shower without a case will shatter the block. After embracing the true art of a great close shave, I find this Alum Block is one of THE most important parts of that great shave. experience. Tightens, soothes the skin on my face and head and is almost magical in what it does. Makes me wonder why I never knew anything about a Alum Block and you don't see this product on the shelf in the shave section of those big box stores as this thing is a MUST have for the perfect shave!

The alum block works well for stopping a minor bleed. It can crumble if it gets wet, so handle it with care. I bought this block in the hopes that it might work as a deodorant crystal in the same way that I've done with another brand's alum block in the past, but it didn't work at all for that. Given that it wasn't meant for that purpose, I can't fault it for not working in that way.

Amazing product. My skin has felt tighter since using it the last few months and razor burn is a thing of the past! I used to have such a terrible, horrible awful time shaving before I found this product. Now I look great post shave

I wish I had discovered this decades ago. I am not a shaving expert, I hate to shave, don't really care to spend any more time than I have to on shaving. After a long time, I finally purchased a new razor, but not one of them fancy real razors y'all probably use. I grabbed a cheap 5 blade whatever it's called Amazon Basics knock off, and it works pretty darn well. But more importantly, I started using this Gentleman Jon Alum Block and WOW it makes my skin delightfully happy. Like my face is dancing, and not just from the jiggling double chin, this Alum Block feels good on the skin, and it makes my skin smoother than I ever had experienced with splash on aftershave, or even with lotion or other fake attempts at fighting razor burn and irritation. So, if you're a high-end shaver, you know better than me, you're probably not reading this review. If you're a normal dude who would prefer to do a million other things than study shaving tools/technique, then just buy one of these, get it wet and rub it on your shaved skin immediately after you shave. I'm a wet shaver and this works perfectly as my post-shave step to tighten my face and smooth everything out. The block stays nice and smooth and it lasts a good long while. This is a good value.

I've used this product for about a half dozen shaves. The quality of the base material is great - it works exactly like it should. I also really like the size, and the fact that it comes in its own plastic box. Don't underestimate that feature, especially when traveling. The reason I've given three stars instead of five is because this block seems to be pressed powder rather than a solid piece. That means the application is a bit rough, and the edges don't smooth over. With a single, solid piece, the surface becomes very, very smooth and corners get rounded in a few uses. This makes application much nicer and more comfortable. Unfortunately, I only know of one brand (Osma) that still sends what appears to be a naturally cut stone suitable for shaving. Also, pressed blocks tend to wear more quickly as the crystals fall out (which contributes to the sense of roughness). It comes down to personal preference, though. I like the way the Osma block wears over time, but you just can't beat Gentleman Jon's value. Many people will not have any issue at all with using a pressed block, and believe me - it will last a LONG time. The size of this block is also very comfortable to hold, a feature not to be underestimated. One note - please do not let this material stay on your face longer than a few minutes. I read about people finishing with alum and not rinsing, and that will seriously damage your skin over time. It's meant to be applied to close pores, then rinsed with cool water to prevent clogging or overdrying. When you're done, use a light moisturizer. Your skin should not feel tight when you're done - it should feel smooth and flexible.

How this product get 5 stars reviews I can't even begin to guess. Firstly, this "Alum Block" is not a true cut alum but one that is reconstituted from alum dust / bits / waste from the process of making true Cut Alum Blocks. This should have been stated in the product description. Secondly, whatever process the brand used, it was shoddy. I received my purchase with a good portion of the block broken and crumbled into bits, powdered. Not only did I lost about ¼ of the block, powered, (first picture, the one with the Gentleman Jon Box) the block looked like it was compressed poorly. with the core much more loosely packed than the edge. Had mine didn't break apart, I would have been able to use this block for a while until I hit that loose core in a few months or so, and the block will start to crumble. To be clear, (last picture with an actual cut alum block) a proper alum block, that I had dropped and while it chipped, it didn't crumble but smoothed out to a glass like block after some use. (I had it for over 2 years now) The Gentleman Jon's that I received, didn't even survived shipping, and now that the loose core is exposed, probably will not last too long with use. This is a very poorly and shoddily made product. I do not recommend anyone buying this. Go buy an Osma block instead.

A must after a good, close shave. Wouldn't be without. Sanitizes and helps stop and leakers. Comes with a plastic, reusable box so it is easy to store. A product that I will be returning to in the future.
