One of the most profound things ever written
I use this for philosophy classes. When I first read "The Brothers Karamazov," I thought, "Wouldn't it be great if this were excerpted and could be bought by itself?" only to find that it is indeed possible. The additional chapters after the parable of the Grand Inquisitor are excellent too and should definitely be read in conjunction with Ivan's tale. Nikolai Berdyaev, the Russian existentialist philosopher, wrote a book entitled "Dostoevsky" and it focuses largely on just this excerpt. The contrast between security bought at the price of slavery, and uncertain freedom, gets to the core of human existence. This book is cheap and profound! The three temptations of Christ are temptations for all of us.

An Intellectual Symposium
Philosophy of Religion To reread Fyodor Dostoevsky's story "The Grand Inquisitor and related chapters from The Brothers Karamazov" more than justifies buying this book. Charles B. Guignon's Introduction prepares the reader to an intellectual symposium comparable only to the one described by Plato in his friend Agathon's house over 2400 years ago. Constance Garnett's 1912 translation of The Brothers Karamazov "has become a classic in its own right:" the minor alterations Guignon made to the text bring it up-to-date. Gonzalo T. Palacios, Ph.D. author The Virgin Mary's Revolution (amazon.com).

Decent
This is okay, but if you are interested in this and want the full experience, then I recommend buying to actual book the Brother Karamazov (which I read before needing this for a class). You will not get the full experience or gain a true understanding of the message if you just read the passages here. The full book is wonderful and I would recommend that over this.

I needed this book for a critical thinking class on the topic of original sin. We read this and discussed the theories of free will, freedom, and freedom of choice. It was engaging mentally and spiritually and I enjoyed the messages that Dostoevsky was able to convey through different characters in the book.

Opening doors.
By reading this small book one is exposed to the most grand panoramic view of human nature and human foibles. I was particularly awakened to perverted attempts and distorted motivations for being as saintly as one can be. This little book is, in my judgement, a powerful and highly informative insight into human nature.

Great book
Remember when reading this that Dostoyevsky was a theist and this is his argument against athiesm while representing both sides.

Great purchase. This book contains excerpts from a series of books from Dostoyevsky. These excerpts focused on the conflicts between social morality, freedom, suffering, and religion's position in the world. Definitely worth reading.
