WD 5TB My Passport, Portable External Hard Drive, Black, backup software with defense against ransomware, and password protection, USB 3.1/USB 3.0 compatible - WDBPKJ0050BBK-WESN

This is yet another small miracle in my working life, to have this tool for making an orderly and permanent record of over 40 years of my projects on a no muss/no fuss basis. It took only two 16-hour days to sort out, if you can believe that. This little critter just burped and asked for more. Thank you, Western Digital.

It’s compact and easy to carry around, which makes it convenient for storing and moving files. The 5TB capacity is a big plus. It’s been reliable so far and works as expected when plugging into different devices. Transfer speeds are decent for a portable hard drive, and it’s simple to use right out of the box.

The WD 5TB My Passport is an excellent portable hard drive. It’s compact, lightweight, and easy to carry, yet offers a huge amount of storage. I really like the built-in backup software with protection against ransomware, as well as the password protection for added security. It connects quickly with USB 3.1/3.0 and transfers files fast and smoothly. A reliable and trustworthy drive for backups, photos, videos, and more. Very happy with this purchase!

I bought a couple of these back in 2022 and 2023. They work well. I take advantage of the password protection feature. It automatically unlocks, when plugged into a PC with the WD software set up to do this, and that generally works well. Occasionally, you have to manually unlock the password protection. I am not sure why this happens. There have been no failures with these drives after 3–4 years of use.

I like how small and portable this external hard drive is. I purchased it to have the space to back up my PS4 games so that I could finally swap out the 500g internal HD for a 2 Terabyte HD that I'd purchased a couple years ago. I also wanted to back up files I had saved on an old MyBook 1 TB EHD that has been very problematic and only works intermittently and inconsistently; I figured that device is on it's last legs and not particularly worth the cost to repair. This new EHD certainly had the capacity to store the 360G worth of PS4 data, and the 640G of other files from the MyBook. The one issue I have found with it is that I cannot use it to back up files on my PS3, because apparently the fact that it doesn't have it's own power supply, that means the PS3's OS cannot recognize it. This means I have to find a workaround to save those files some other way. Other than this one sticking point, I am pretty satisfied with the purchase so far. Update: As of December 2024, the hard drive happened to be plugged into my PS5 during a power outtage. This wasn't the first time it had happened, but this time, the PS5 told me the drive is corrupted beyond repair and must be reformmated, which would see me lose over 2.5TB worth of my PS4/PS5 games/data. Now I'm trying to find a way to save that massive amount of data.

Let me start by saying that I do not buy other brands. Western Digital drives have never failed me, ever. I cannot say so much for their competition. When other drives fail, I always replace them with WD. I have been using WD hardware as long as I've owned computers (over 30 years now). I have 6 Passports at this time. 2 2-Tb, 3 4-Tb and now this 5-Tb. My laptop has pretty limited onboard drive space, so I use one of my 4-Tb drives full-time. If my computer is on, this drive is running. I use the other Passports less often, such as for backup tasks or storing media. I have only had this drive (the 5-Tb) for a few days but it will be my new "always" drive once I get all my files transferred onto it. I was surprised that its case is slightly smaller than my 4-Tb drives. I have not benchmarked it, but it seems as fast as the 4-Tb drives. When I see people complaining about a drive's speed, I wonder if they're aware how big a terabyte is. If you had the information printed on paper, you would not move a terabyte around as quickly as one of these drives! One drawback I'm noticing is in the software. When I first attempted to install, it hung at 18% and in 1/2 hour never proceeded. I shut it down and retried. That time it successfully installed, but almost immediately told me there's an update and asked if I wanted to install that. I've tried the update several times now, but it keeps reporting that the update failed. Additionally, I tried installing WD Security but it continues to fail. I'm running Windows 10 and keep it updated, so I'm not sure where the problem could be other than in the WD software. I do my own backups, so I can't report on the WD backup software. I'll report back if there are any changes. But for now, the product gets 5 stars from me!
