The Assimil method for teaching foreign languages is through the listening of audio cd's and the reading of an accompanying book, one side native language, one side foreign language. This method is focused on learning whole sentences, for an organic learning of the grammar. It begins with a long passive phase of only reading and listening, and eventually adds active exercises. Most books contain around 100 lessons, with the active phase starting on Lesson 50. The word Assimil comes from assimilation. Several different series are published: With Ease series, which teach basic rules of grammar and a vocabulary of 2000-3000 words; Perfectionnement series, which teaches more advanced idiosyncrasies and idioms of the target language; Business series, which focuses on vocabulary related to international business; Idioms series, which teaches common idioms; Review: Fantastic system. Used Assimil to learn French two years ... - Fantastic system. Used Assimil to learn French two years ago. Now I'm nine months into learning Arabic via this French textbook. Couldn't more highly praise the method (Completed the entirety of both the With Ease/Sans Peine and the Using/Perfectionnement for learning French via English, and I'm now 70 lessons through the 77 lesson Sans Peine series for learning Arabic with French). Definitely buy this system. I've tried Rosetta Stone (years and years ago), Fluenz, and Duolingo. Don't waste your time with Duolingo or rosetta stone. Fluenz is great for establishing a firm base in a language (used it for French before starting Assimil), but it is quite boring. If its a testament to quality, then its worth saying that when I decided to start Arabic, I didn't consider purchasing or using anything besides Assimil. Still quite happy with that decision.

real improvement over the old version
I ve tried the old Arabic course form Assimil, but that one is not nearly as good as this one. The approach is more systematic, building knowledge in seizable quantities. On top of that, the price is fair. So I'm really happy with this one.

Parfait
La méthode est simple et a fait ses preuves. En revanche il faut être discipliné pour ne pas laisser trop de temps entre deux leçons et ne pas se retrouver obligé de revenir en arrière !
