First days of ownership and already in love
I gave up free-feeding years ago because my eldest senior cat has problems with scarfing his food and vomiting (sometimes straight into the bowl, yuck.) I have even tried various manual feeders, like a UFO shaped one with multiple holes that made him "work" for his food as well as the one with the tubes, but a) those still gave him 24/7 access to food even if it slowed him down a little and b) it didn't really slow him down enough to prevent the vomiting! Also, while my younger playful one liked the "challenge" feeders and would use them anytime, if humans were present, my older lazier cat would cry and act like we were starving him even though the full feeder was right there. Nuts, right?! So, for a while I lived with family and we coped with this issue by all of us doling out small amounts of food to them only when they were hungry. There was almost always someone home so this was easy to deal with. However, I recently moved back out on my own and I decided that couldn't leave them entirely without food while I work my 8 hour shift. It just seemed like it made them crazy and more food-driven when I was home. Enter this feeder. While I was leery of spending this kind of money on a cat feeder, I was inspired by Lynn's review that said it made her cat less anxious. I ADORE my precious sweet cats but their starvation anxiety was driving me bonkers (and making MY anxiety go through the roof). Also, the review by Karen that mentioned using a tray vs. the bowl seemed genius because I knew there was no way my pushy eldest was going to let the other one share a bowl with him, no matter how big. Also my youngest hates deep bowls because he's a bit prissy about his giant whiskers getting stressed. So, I ordered this machine, bought my D batteries and a nice roomy cookie sheet from the store, and hoped it was worth it. Well, after a few days of ownership, the feeder is successfully dosing out 1/8 cup of kibble every few hours, and I'm already noticing some amazing things: my cats DO seem less anxious. My eldest one is even leaving part of the serving of food behind for the younger one to eat or for him to snack on later. He hasn't vomited once since I set it up, either. Knock on wood. It's also eliminated the need for me to stumble out of bed at 5am to dole out a snack for them, which is utterly priceless. I just set one of the timers for 5am! Also, the cookie sheet is working great. When the food falls on the metal it makes a nice clatter and the cats come running. It's enough room for both of them to eat at the same time. It's also wide enough that my little guy can still scoop up his food and it doesn't stress his whiskers. Oh, and since the cookie sheet is metal I can clean it easily to avoid cat acne. Highly recommend. I have to say, it took me a few minutes to program, and I've still been tweaking the timing as we use it, but so far I'm really impressed and excited by this little machine. I think it will make cat ownership even more enjoyable for me, and hopefully make my cats healthier (emotionally and physically.) I will update with any additional comments after owning it a bit longer!

Read all the way! Best thing since sliced bread. Learning curve! Pregnancy sanity saved!
I read tons of reviews. But didnt want to buy 3 devices. Found a 3 way splitter (mentioned in other reviews). saved my sanity and made us get this auto dispenser. I'm due with my first in July. I cant free feed my cats because they will get fat (they never used to bother us for food when we free fed them-sigh). They have lost a combined 4 lbs since we started scheduling thier foods & are no longer obese!! But this scheduling came with them bombarding us in the am. Cant have that with the baby coming! So I took a chance on an open box like new with slight scratches. I'm very pleased to say even the open boxed device works! I got it a day or 2 before my splitter and adapter, so I used that time to clean and air dry. Install took maybe 12 minutes? Make sure all items/components are tight, secure, & dry! The programming was prob the most difficult, but its so worth it for the benefits! Now it find it fairly easy! It would be nice if the screen had a blue back light or something so it's easier to see. Think grey screen with black letters; that's what this display is like. When programmed and ready, it shows the buttons are locked and the next time for feeding! I've heard some say they had issues. I did buy the adapter separately. I've since had 2 power outages and all I have to do is set the time and then set to custom (vs the preprogrammed cat or dog) and it remembers the feeding schedule without me having to reschedule the feedings! Very thankful for that lil feature since power outages are very common in the summer here! You will have to force feedings a couple times because the conveyor doesnt have food on it! At first I was like wth! But after doing a couple force feedings, it worked perfectly. TIP: dont use slow feed unless you have larger portions. Since you can schedule up to 12 feedings with 1/8c as your lowest, I just do multiple 1/4c feedings. The smaller amounts just take way too long to dispense on slow feed! We use blue buffalo cat kibbles and have no issues with jamming. It took about 2 months for my cats to correlate the feeder with feeding rather than us making it magically happen. They have now completely stopped tormenting me in the mornings for food! I give them wet food at night so it's just for morning breakfast and afternoon snack! I will say we have messes because I cant secure the bowls and the cats drag the bowls, but honestly the cats love the hunt... they go nuts. Make sure to read the cleaning recommendations! Def dont want to ruin your new life saver! My cats are brutes! They even tried to bite the lid off. They haven't been able to open it no matter how hard they try. I do see that some say it could be tipped over. Ours is on the floor. They would have to use some serious skill to knock it over with full food for sure. Since I have the splitter, my cats cant stick their paws up for treats. The only negative I have is that now my cats associate the sound to cereal pouring into a bowl, and they run in all excited and confused lmao

it does its job! but...
it definitely dispenses food at custom intervals, with up to twelve meals per day at custom sizes, but the setup is an unintuitive nightmare. expect to spend 30+ minutes reading the manual and following poorly written instructions to get this thing to function as intended and repeating that for every power outage, every time you want to move it, every time the plug gets jostled (if you're using the power supply in lieu of batteries). as a side note, the internal clock tends to drift as well. not terribly, but in the year and a half between when i bought it and when i had to change the batteries (this DOES NOT come with a power supply OR batteries!), it drifted about 15 minutes. also, the little ring that holds the bowl in is kind of flimsy and broke about a year after me owning it. otherwise, i love this thing. it feeds my cat 3 times a day, 1/8th a cup per meal (with wet food in the evenings dispensed by moi), and it saved our relationship (he's incredibly food motivated to the point of being incredibly annoying when he associates me with his regular meals). it holds about a month of food and keeps it nice and fresh with the tight sealing lid, and he hasn't been able to figure out how to get it to dispense extras, no matter how hard he tries (though it does dispense a little with a swift kick to the side). for the price, it's hard to beat. i'll be using it 'till the day it dies or 'till the day i no longer have a pet to feed with it.

Reliable 8-year run.
We've had this feeder for 8 years. It's been great. Pros: Never jammed. Batteries last over 6-9 months. It's been very dependable to feed 2 cats. Cons: Hard to program (each time I change the batteries, I have to take out the instructions). Hard to clean (it's tricky to get it back together). I can't think of a single issue with it - until today (getting an F02 error). I was able to reset the unit and it’s working fine.

The best outdoor feeder.
I am amazed at how durable and well made this feeder is. It survived a group of raccoons dragging it across my yard to a shed and under a worktable. They could not open it. The feeder is scratched and still working and they got ZERO food. The journey took the feeder over a concrete patio, through a rock covered path, over heavy stepping stones onto a work area and rested under a work table on a pile of leaves and yet it still works. The lid is on tight!. I have now placed it in a deck box with a hole cut out for the metal bowl! Good job petsafe.

AC adapter not included but read this before adding adapter to your cart
Great product, very efficient and setup is a little confusing but not horrible. Please read further if purchasing for suggestions on power supply. Pros: We put D batteries in the device back in October and have it setup for feeding our small cat so we programmed the serving size to be the smallest portion size available which is 1/8 cup 3x a day. It's been 6 months and only running off batteries we still have the battery icon during 2/3 bars for battery icon which is pretty impressive on its efficiency. I was able to purchase a 4 pack of D size batteries at Best Buy for $6 and at this rate it looks as though we'll be able to go a full year before needing replaced. After seeing how efficient it runs I decided to not buy the AC adapter for $20 as is would take over 3 years to equal what I'd pay in batteries and by then it's a mute point. Relating on AC power to keep your pets feed while out of town is risky for power failures and such so you would want to use batteries anyway for backup but at this rate why bother. If using to feed multiple pets or larger dogs then your battery life will not be the same but unless you're doing 1 cup of feeding more than once a day I believe the batteries alone will be fine. The hopper is a great large size so I rarely need to refill and never had it jam or fail on me. We feel completely safe and able to rely on this product to keep our cat feed for long trips when we go out of town and would highly recommend Cons: I was caught off guard and surprised when I got this delivered the day before leaving it of town and needed it for our cat. After running it to the store to get D batteries and not being to find a universal AC charger we just used the batteries for operation. It's my fault for apparently missing the description that charger is separate but this is the kind of item I would just assume comes with an AC adapter. The tip size and charge ratings for vintage and amperage I found were unique and I'm not sure if they do that intentionally so you have to purchase their brand adapter in order to not use batteries. I didn't feel comfortable with the variance if amperage output from universal chargers so I haven't tried. The OEM AC adapter for this unit is about $20 Suggestions: Everything about this product is great when it comes to features! Hopper size is large, food portion options massive from only 1/8 cup to 2 cups per feeding as well as the number of feeding options per day. While everything about this product is large and impressive the feeding bowl is as well but that's not always convenient. Our munchkin cat only gets a 1/8 cup feeding and with the large bowl his food will push to the back of the bowl as he's eating so he has to work a little harder to get to the back. My suggestion would be an optional insert to place in the bowl with a slant so when inserted it makes the collection size smaller but still has the ramp to slide the food to the front.

Worked Reasonably Well for Nearly Seven Years...Then Stopped With No Way to Know :(
I bought one of these in May 2016, and now, despite some misgivings, I'm about to buy another. I bought it so that my (kinda dog-like and in particular dog-typically food-motivated) cat would get fed at regular times, since my work and social schedules were inconsistent and not having regular mealtimes seemed to be stressing her, and since free-feeding was not an option if her heart's desire to have her feet no longer reach the floor was to be thwarted. It performed well in that role for those seven years, particularly once I broke down and shelled out for the AC adapter (charging 20 extra bucks - and I think it was more like $37 at the time - for what's almost certainly a $1.50 mass produced piece of electronics IS one of those "brings dishonor on your family" kind of things, but that's a bit tangential). The only major problems aside from the blatant gouging on the AC adapter, were that the hopper is basically opaque, which if one has a busy schedule makes it easy not to notice that it's emptied over time, particularly if it is supposed to be one's teenaged child's responsibility to check and refill it and one's pet ardently begs for food whether their meal was actually dispensed or not. Really, a well-designed system would have a simple level switch or piezoelectric sensor that makes it beep every hour if the hopper's empty, but that would probably cost the manufacturer $5 or so, and therefore add ~$70 to the price, per the AC adapter. The interface is not very intuitive, such that I wound up having to print out portions of the manual (those related to preparing the conveyor belt with food) and tape them to the lid, and is also hard to read in less than perfect lighting. The clock on my unit loses time at the rate of about 15 minutes a year, and there's no display on the operating screen of what time the unit THINKS it is, which makes it harder to check on it to make sure it's dispensing correctly. I also wish there was more granularity in portion size, but that seems to be a fundamental design limitation of marketing the same product to dog and cat owners, so I'm not going to knock it. The review asks me to rate the lock feature. It, um has one? It fits into the pattern of the user interface being unintuitive and finicky. It also asks me to rate it for being "easy to clean." I didn't find it particularly so, especially the conveyor, so I admit I got a little lazy about it, which is likely a gradual contributor to the fact that for the last week or so it has been inconsistent about actually dispensing food even though the hopper and conveyor are full. Breaking it down and cleaning everything hasn't helped; it works when I refill it and prepare the conveyor with food but then the meal dispensing times come and go without any identifiable activity...and no error messages or other indication that anything's wrong. Fortunately my pet is not at risk of starvation any time soon but is clearly stressed, and it's rather haunting to think what might happen if we were away for an extended period and whoever I had checking on her had no way to tell if the bowl was empty because it hadn't been filled or because SCARF SCARF SCARF. It did work adequately for seven years and is familiar to my cat, and the competing products seem to be more expensive and possibly from fly-by-night manufacturers, so I'm ordering another, but I wish the manufacturer would add "empty hopper" and "failed to dispense" sensors and warnings (and a display of the supposed current time) and then be visited by three ghosts who would convince them to only pass on the actual cost to the consumer. Oh, and the AC adapter should be included for crying out loud.

Lasted Six Years
Since this feed lasted me six years I shouldn't give it less than 4 stars. It was perfectly reliable and accurate in those six years -- until it wasn't --two weeks ago, when I got the dreaded F02 error code and it started jamming up constantly. So now I'm on Amazon purchasing a new feeder, but not this one again. I guess I'm old enough to expect appliances to last forever. But, also this thing is ridiculously over-engineered. You drop your food into the feeder that funnels out the bottom stirred by this stick that rocks back and forth, which drops the food onto a conveyer belt that travels back up again and then drops out into the bowl. It's like a machine manufactured by ACME in a Looney Tunes cartoon. I'm amazed it hadn't jammed earlier but it was surprisingly reliable in those years. Programming this thing is also unnecessarily complicated. And I had to buy the power cord separately, which was pretty lame.

I think this is the best allround pet feeder.
I wanted a feeder that would dispense food more than 4 times a day . this will do 12. the reservoir for food is at least 8 lbs of food . it takes about 75 % of a 12 lb bag of food. The smallest portion is 1/8 of a cup. I measured the output when I got it over a 24 hour period. very close to what i set on the feeder. This is done via a conveyor belt. each section of the conveyor is 1/8 of a cup. so if you program for 1/2 a cup the conveyor advances 4 positions to dispense the amount. very accurate. has a slow feeder option which works great . if you set it on the hour it wil dispense the food on the hour , five , ten and 15 minute after the hour. this is great as my dog gulps his food down and is prone to bloat. I bought the plug in charger , complete waste of money . 4 D cell batteries are good for a year. it has a tiny electric motor to operate and it uses very little power. best of all you can put it any where you want and not have to worry about power cords My wife was skeptical and said I like gadget. I was too but so far it has exceeded all expectations . very happy. oh one person commented that not all the food would slide down the hopper . I have not experienced this.completely empties the hopper every time.
