Cool looking Koi pond and superior customer service
I have a 1500 gallon gold fish pond and a 7000 Koi pond that were looking a little sad and brown here in winter. And since the water clarity was good I was concerned about the views that might be open to heron, raccoons, possums. Yes I live in the city but have a nice woody acre. So I decided to try the Airmax Black Dye because the blue dye doesn't look good on waterfalls. Well the black is very pretty black with very little product used, but the water coming over the waterfalls looked neutral. That was good. The water in the test tubes for ammonia, nitrites, pH etc was clear so that tests were accurate. That is good. I hope that the lack of penetrating sunlight may slow down string algae as it warms up. But the darkness does not seem to affect water temp. Thats good. And the ponds looked really cool, deep black with the reflection the ads talked about. Until I decided to put some Natures Blue in one to try to get the Twightlight Blue that Airmax also makes but that I didn't buy. Unfortunately it did what ll blue dies did: make it a very pretty but unnatural blue across the waterfall and at the agitation at the bottom of the falls. When I received the products there was a slip enclosed that asked that if I could't give them 5 stars please call or email. I had 2 issues that were going to take my rating to 4 stars so I did as asked and emailed them my feedback. Much to my surprise I didn't get a defensive answer or an excuse as to why they must do what they must do. I got a real back and forth conversation that specifically addressed the feedback I was going to give about dosing for smaller ponds. As a result of the time and interest they took with someone who only spent about 50.00 with them, they have created a repeat customer. So my feedback is that the product is good but use increments of a half or one ounce at a time. If you have a waterfall the Natures Blue will make it look very blue...very bright blue, and I think unnatural. I am going to stick with Black or try Twilight Blue. Thanks Steve! You were a Blessing.

Don’t waste your money, my pond 24 hrs. after I used the black dye.
The black dye was a waste of my $30. I’ve used the blue dye and it works beautifully for months. I put the black dye in yesterday and nothing! Might as well poured water in pond, no change. Did not change the color of my pond at all, no where. What a waste of money. Why dose the same size bottle of blue dose more than the black dye? Don’t waste your on the black dye!

Natural pond color
I use this in combination with the twilight blue. The black makes the pond water appear more natural in color.

Used in Koi pond/water garden
This dye works well in the short term for a small/medium sized Koi pond with water garden. It doesn't take much to turn the pond a nice black color to shade the fish or keep the birds attention away. Likely you can get 100-200 applications with this liter. You think perhaps this will be a lifetime supply, think again. If you use this in a Koi pond with plants, inline filter+UV, it may chew up the dye fast and will need to reapply weekly or even more often to achieve consistent results. With my pond it is completly gone within a week. I still like the product, it just doesn't last long. Alas the problems of a healthy bioactive filtered pond. Others with less plants and no UV may get by for longer times between applications. Good news though, it is less than 25 cents/application.

Black mirror
Love the color and fantastic black mirror effect. Things to note. 1. Ensure that hard surfaces are well sealed. It washes neatly off of sealed stone and cement is spilled. 2. Bleach will remove the stains from unsealed surfaces. 3. A little goes a long way in small pools. I needed it to be very dark to hide the planter platform completely even in bright sun. The platform is 1 inch under surface. It did not take much. Would buy again.

I Accidentally Turned My Backyard into the Dark Side!
Update 9/9; Unfortunately after 3 days it has seemed to of worn off and my pond turned green again. I’ve added another 2 fl oz to see if it hold up. So, I got this for my pond, and let me just say, this stuff does *not* mess around. My pond’s about 5,000 gallons +/- a few gallons here and there, baking in the unforgiving Southern California sun, and I figured, "Hey, I’ll eyeball the amount." Well, let’s just say my eyeballing skills are a little too ambitious. Less than 2 fl oz later, my pond is now a **bottomless abyss** of darkness. Pitch black. Like, I’m pretty sure if I toss a coin in, it’ll disappear into another dimension. It's not so much a pond anymore as it is a scene from a horror movie. I half-expect a mysterious fog to roll in and a voice to whisper, "Join usss..." In fairness, I “should” have started with 1 fl oz. But did I? Nope. So, here we are with a pond that could double as Darth Vader’s swimming pool. On the bright side (or lack thereof), it’s doing its job fantastically! No UV rays getting through this black void, that’s for sure. The water looks great, if you’re into the whole "infinite darkness" vibe. If you’re looking for a “subtle” tint, though, maybe start with less than half an ounce unless you’re trying to summon a kraken. **Overall, 10/10 would recommend**, but learn from my mistake and measure carefully unless you’re ready to embrace the darkness!

APPLIED 04.05.20. Follow-Up Review Coming
04/05/20: I Just Applied the Product today, April 5, 2020 and I have no Product Review to offer, yet. For the past 4 years I have used Apllied Biochemists AquaShade and have been 100% happy with their product EXCEPT the color - they do not offer their product in BLACK. My pond is in a country pine setting, not the tropics. I have no complaints about the performance of AquaShade. In my pond 1 gallon of AquaShade has lasted a full 10+ months. Again, very pleased with the performance of AquaShade - Except the Color. This year, 2020, I decided to try a new color-black- to bring a less tropical feel to my country landscape. I purchased this product, AirMax 4x Concentrate Black Demond Pond Dye and received it next day thru Amazon Prime. I scattered the dye wearing gloves, and using a 4 quart measuring cup to toss about 4-6oz as I walked the perimeter of the pond. If I get a seasonal color I will be very happy... I will write a follow-up review Follow Up (04/09/20): first application showed immediate results. No complaints. That said, the water is not a dense “black.” It’s more like a grey-smoky window tinting that provides shade, but you can still see thru (it’s not black paint). This got me to thinking, I paid $28 for a quart (4x concentrate) and I am comparing it to my other tropical blue that was sold at $43 as a gallon. So, I purchased another quart of Black Diamond and added it to my pond today. SIMPLY OUTSTANDING RESULTS. This is the reflective deeper black I was wanting. My landscape lights and illuminated trees have an awesome reflection off the pond. I will write a follow up on color retention later in 2020.
