What's the difference between the basic and the one with the swift start pack? I see the one with the swift start pack being more cheap than the basic

It is the same as the base version that came before this one. All new versions of Wingspan includes the swift start promo pack that helps teach the game to new players. It is four guides and 10 new bird cards. The guides walk players through four turns, and the 10 new cards can be shuffled into the deck for both learning and non-learning games.

Could you buy 2 games and combine to add more players?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but you don't want to! Even with 5 players the game drags a bit. It works best with 1-4 players; you don't want to add more than that. Get two games and set up two tables! Everyone will have more fun that way.

Should I get the one with the swift starter pack for $59 or the one being released on February 23 for $89 what is the difference?

Accepted Answer

The $59 version is fine, the $89 is most likely a reseller. You could also go to the Stonemaier Games website and sign up as a Champion (membership) for $15 a year and get 25% off all their games. The price for the membership/Wingspan will end up being the same, but your following purchases will save you more if you like their games and get it through their website.

I was hoping to learn about birds and instead I feel overwhelmed by game rules.  Does one actually learn about the birds?

that depends on you and where you want to focus.  each card has some info at the bottom, but not loads.  you learn their wingspan and other info like habitat, general diet, and nest type.  not sure if the egg capacity is based 100% on the actual egg laying specs of each bird. 
 the bird illustrations are beautiful.  but it's not as informative as a birding book.  it's a fun, chill strategy game with a birding theme.  the rules can be daunting at first.  i'd recommend watching some youtube videos like rodney from the "watch it played" channel.  also the swift starter pack will help.  but to really learn about birds, get a good field guide.
