B.P.R.D.: Plague of Frogs Volume 1

Simply Awesome!!!
I just received this B.P.R.D. Plague of Frogs volume 1 hardcover today and I am impressed. In reading them all previously, it was refreshing to reread them and have so many in a convenient and classy package. Mike Mignola's writing has a similar but different feel than his Hellboy volumes. It's very much an excellent compliment to the Hellbuy arc, similar in tone but different enough in a variety of ways that expand the world of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.. With a variety of visual talent, B.P.R.D. explores the endless possibilities and depth of the individual B.P.R.D. characters, mostly sidelined in previous Hellboy arcs. Here, old characters are expanded and new characters are introduced. I can't wait for the next volumes to continue in this trend. The stories get even better beyond the issues offered here. As the stories progress, the mythology gets even tighter and more rewarding emotionally as each story deepens a rich plot and gives each character, new and old, excellent development. The stories are fun and unpredictable. Above all, this series really allows Guy Davis to shine. For those of you who have not yet read passed this volume, just wait. It gets even better.

you can buy 4 of these books for roughly the same price if you're smart about used copies or just get lucky
This collects three trades and is much cheaper in the long run if you plan on reading more.Instead of buying 12 trades, you can buy 4 of these books for roughly the same price if you're smart about used copies or just get lucky. You don't need to know MUCH about the universe of MIke Mignola to understand. Just know that Hellboy left the BPRD and now some of the men and creatures working for it are unsure about their future in the Government Organization. They investigate monsters, creatures, and other stuff. Pretty standard stuff. You get to learn more about Lobster Johnson, Roger, and Abe Sapien which is PERFECT because they are all great characters. It's a fine introduction to the Universe, too, and not bogged down too much in continuity but sort of creates it's own without relying too much on Hellboy.Pick it up! Even if you've never read Mignola before this is a fine beginning place!

I received this title today as a companion to the 3 Hellboy Library Editions
I had to return it for replacement, as I did 2 of the 3 Hellboy Library Editions, because what was supposed to be a black page had smears and smudges on it.I understand its cheaper to print these books in China and ship them here and that keeps the cost down. However, returns of these books because of imperfections must be cutting into profitability. Maybe printing them here would initially be more expensive but the quality would be higher and there would be less returns cutting into profits. That being said, BPRD is one of the best series of the early 21st century and any serious collector would want this hardcover in their collection. That is if you can get a copy without imperfections right off the press!!

Superb Collection
First, before commenting on the material itself, I was able to get this on Amazon for a fraction of the cover price brand new and it arrived within days. Bravo all around! As for the book itself, this a beautiful hardcover that is worth every dime. Rather than one large, self-contained story arc, this features a number of shorter story arcs within the greater Hellboy/B.P.R.D. universe. With the main focus being mainly on Abe Sapien and Roger, you do also get a taste of Lobster Johnson as well. While I immediately was stoked on just the concept of a character named Lobster Johnson, this was my first actual exposure to his adventures and the excitement was highly warranted. The remainder finds the B.P.R.D mainstays embarking on numerous stints around the globe, both on the Earth and occasionally inside of it. The artwork varies, but the stories are all imaginative, fun, well-crafted and original. From afar, I was confused as to why people loved the Hellboy universe so much, but I have since been converted. Get this immediately.

Every bit as good as the main Hellboy book!
I've been a fan of Hellboy since the first movie introduced me to the character, and I quickly devoured all of the paperback releases which were available at the time. Although I continued to read subsequent Hellboy releases, and I was aware of the B.P.R.D. spinoff series, I mostly ignored the latter. If you have committed the same sin, or if you are completely new to the Mignolaverse, I urge you to pick up this book! The B.P.R.D. series is every bit as good as the book that spawned it, and with the big red guy out of the way, the supporting characters have room to grow and develop. This volume sees Liz going on a personal journey to gain control over both her powers and herself, as well as Abe learning why he has that "Innsmouth look". We also see the beginning of the frog war, and once you start reading that, I'm sure you'll want to pick up volume 2. It just gets better and better.

Again, Love BPRD
I love BPRD. The stories are creepy, but not overdone. The art is always something beautiful to look at. This collection is so much better than trying to read it from single comic books (Which is what I've been doing for years. I just found out about this format last month.)It's a bit heavy, so have a good bed or desk to lay the book one while you read it.I bought all 4 volumes at the same time, so all my reviews are pretty much the same. Roll with it.

Of you love or just like Hellboy this is for u & ...
There is a 4 hard cover book trade paper back series of the plague of frogs stories. Of you love or just like Hellboy this is for u & a cheap way to get them all in 4 different vol.'s that continue the story arc. Other than that I won't spoil it for u, like so many other reviewers do.!!Just know this is a great series in a big vol. to get you teeth into. !!

The End is the Beginning is the End
It all starts here, the end.Or maybe it started along time previously, that’s up to you.But what can be said with certainty, is that the roots of the final ending of the Hellboy universe with The Devil You Know can be seen to be coalescing here; the ending starting to take shape.Stories are excellent, character work top notch, art - varied and beautiful especially Guy Davis.Recommend.

If you like Hellboy, you'll like this.
Very good book. The first 2/3 of the book are short stories about the BPRD and the last 1/3 is the beginning of the actual Plague of Frogs story-line. If you've finished the main Hellboy books and want more, this is the book you should read next.
