Great fire pit / grill
So versatile. We can use it as fire pit, make some hot charcoals and start to cook on it, just need to throw a few pieces of wood to make fire again when done eating. We can grill on commercial charcoals or wood charcoals, or cook on propane gas or griddle/dutch open. It functions as so many things. As a fire pit, it's great too. I was worried if it won't be hot enough because it's small, but it's was hotter than expected. Even better than solo stove as it's warmer on legs. Its double wall blocks wind well. The small vent works surprisingly well too. It's really nice to set up fire pit where we want because some campground placed their fire pit in a weird spot. It's easy to pack and set up. Nice looking and makes nice looking fire as well. It's really enjoyable. It has a few downsides. It's kind of small to put firewood as it is. You can still put it there, but need to be careful how to set it.Not sure about durability. I know it's fire pit and won't last long but after first use, all of inside paint was gone, second use the bottom grate was bent.I still think I can use this 5 years but it show more damages every time we use.And propane is convenient to use but also hard to adjust the heat and re-ignite. It's heavy to carry too. I'm not sure if I really need this (but it's a good addition)First we were looking at Petromax Atago. But this was cheaper, has propane and looks like Petromax copied Volcano's design, we decided to get this. For the price, I think it's a great buy.

Versatile Grill for Camping Trips and Overlanding
This has been a superb grill for us for many years. It has tolerated a significant amount of abuse on multiple cross-country overlanding camping trips. We specifically like it because it works with a size 12 Dutch oven; in fact, not only does the pot of the (size 12) Dutch oven fit inside perfectly, the *lid* sits upside-down on top by itself, making a miniature skottle cook surface. The fact that we can cook with wood, charcoal, or propane means we almost always have a way to heat our food when the various fire bans are in effect here in the western USA; and the fact that we can fit a Dutch oven means that cleanup is really easy after cooking at camp. Both of these facts make carrying a Volcano 3 very appealing for our needs. I also recommend the Volcano Lid (https://www.amazon.com/Volcano-Outdoors-30-700-Lid-Grilling/dp/B004FGP07S) for those who like their food smoky!I haven't been able to find a replacement bag for my Volcano3 Collapsible Grill...every time I look, they've been out of stock. So, I found a different way. I found a pizza bag (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B089NYY7J7) that works great! Also, to keep the bottom edges of the grill from damaging the pizza bag, I place the Volcano 3 in a shallow pan (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0055Y14OM), which also makes it super easy to insert and remove from the bag. I also picked up a Camp Chef a carry bag (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002YUBR6) for the Volcano 3's removable top grill, bottom grate (for wood or charcoal), and the (heat) diffuser plate. I like this storage setup WAY better than what came with the Volcano 3.In summary, this is a versatile grill that has stood the test of time and heavy abuse. We've occasionally though about going to something more compact, but this thing is so darn useful and easy that it ends up going with us on every trip. My compliments to the folks at Volcano, they have produced a masterpiece that is a shining example of durability, maintainability, quality, reliability, simplicity, utility, and versatility....a space normally occupied by very few, such as Jeeps, A-10 Warthogs, KLR 650 motorcycles, and Swiss Army Knives. Highly recommend.

Great stoves for charcoal and wood, propane, not so much.
I've owned this stove (the Volcano 2) for a little over 3 years now and it is a great little stove for dutch oven cooking and grilling. The model I purchased did not have the propane adapter on it but I have purchased a second Volcano 3 recently, thinking propane would be a great option to have on this stove. Well, there are some drawbacks to using propane. The propane adapter is great for frying or grilling but forget about baking anything with it, even if you do have the hood. You just can't get the temperature below 425-450 and it's super hot directly above the burner (of course). The supplied heat diffuser is insufficient to mitigate the intense heat from the burner. The good news is, with the flame turned down low, there is little danger of it being blown out by the wind. The burner itself is relatively small in diameter for a 19,500 BTU burner, which is probably part of the problem. A better valve for regulating flame height might help as well. These stoves work exceptionally well with a 12 inch dutch oven, bean pot or skillet. They fit down inside so they don't slip around at all. The bottom of my stove gets warm to the touch, you can place your hand on it and hold it there without getting burned, as long as you're using the stove for normal baking or cooking. Using it on a picnic table or even a plastic roll around cart as I do is not an issue. Of course, placing hot lids, grates and heat diffusers on that plastic cart is another story.*** Edit 4/18/2016 *** I did some trouble shooting on the gas value (it's a simple ball valve) that regulates the flow of propane after the regulator. It appears to be very cheaply made and when it is turned down to lower settings for baking or simmering, applying any downward pressure on it will shut off the gas to the burner long enough for the burner to go out... Not a good thing since you have to remove your dutch oven or skillet to notice it. This valve is also not replaceable which means the only other means you have of regulating flow is with the tank valve. When it comes time to replace this hose, you're going to have issues finding a replacement as I've never seen another like it. This is, in my humble opinion, the weak link in an otherwise great little stove.*** Edit 1/5/2017 ***. My one complaint about the flame adjustment has been solved. After contacting the distributor, I took the valve apart and lubricated the rubber O ring inside with a little oil. That has made it much easier to adjust the flame height. Now I can adjust it down to the tiniest of flames. Yeah!!!!

First impressions are very good - solid and well thought out
just received the valcano 3 - this is my first impressions from un-boxing the product today.it's surprisingly heavy, feels sturdy and construction appears to be solid. One thing I was curious to see was if the accessories were the classic cheapo thin bendy grill grates and the diffuser plate especially. Well, I was pleasantly surprised that both the lower grill used for the fuel (wood, charcoal etc) and the upper grill used for the food that sits around the top, are nice and solidly built. The diffuser plate is a heavy gauge steel and solidly constructed as well.I pulled it out and put the handle on and gave it a little yank and out it popped, just as described. pretty cool, hopefully that little quick pop up feature will continue to function as smoothly as it gets used. As it is now, pretty cool.I love that you have the flexibility to use solid fuel or standard size LP tanks. I'll probably end up purchasing a smaller 1 or 5 gallon LP tank (expensive but much easier to pack up) for taking car camping with the kids or just little picnic outings. The burner seems to be well thought out and nicely made. It is rated to put out 19,000 BTU which is pretty nice - anything above about 12,000 is considered getting into commercial burner output but they don't have the outdoors to contend with, like wind. I haven't seen the flame spread or pattern yet so we'll have to check that out and see how well it cooks for my cast iron and carbon steel pans. 19,000 BTU should work well for firing my carbon steel wok - at least I can't wait to try it out.The storage bag is a welcome addition to the kit and works well to hold everything together. I wouldn't call it heavy duty since this is about 20 + pounds of gear you will be hauling but it is adequate, very happy that it is included and works well.I'll have to update after I get to try it out and work with some of the different cooking options but I can say so far I'm looking forward to firing it up.

Great product, VERY versatile
This is a great product. It's everything they say it is. I also bought a cast iron Dutch oven for roasts and stews. And the heat cover cuts my charcoal use requirements significantly. Great for frequent use. Now, from a preppers perspective, using this stove with a Dutch oven makes a lot of sense. It fulfills the 3 requirements every prepper should be looking for: 1) minimal fuel use. 2) minimal cooking smells 3) easy concealment.I buy charcoal when it's on sale, end of season clearance and broken bags. For a bit $30, I have already accumulated enough charcoal to cook with the volcano grill every day for about 2 years. Heavy duty trashcans are a great way to store the charcoal. VERY economical. Of course you can cook with wood as well if grilling. I am now making my own charcoal just from fallen branches from the yard and will probably never buy charcoal again.I really never saw the point in purchasing the propane attachment, but now I am starting to see the practicality of it for some situations. Deep frying and waterbath canning would be pretty easy with the propane unit. If I get one in the near future, I will add to this review.BTW, the carry bag and compact storage are also nice features. This is not a lightweight stove. You are not going to use this while backpacking. It is heavy duty and built to last. Buy with confidence. It's a great product for regular use and will be a Godsend in a grid-down situation.

Multi-tool of grills.
What a great grill/ fireplace. I've been wanting a grill for years, but have been conflicted between the convenience of propane and the flavor of charcoal. This grill solves that problem by giving both options. As a bonus when you are done grilling your steaks, just add a couple sticks of fire would and have a nice camp fire to sit around while you enjoy them. Very portable and well worth the money.

As Promised, Great Sturdy Unit
This was a splurge compared to other camp grills but we just love it. The propane element grills hot enough to put a nice crispy sear on the skin of fish. My kids roasted marshmallows over the element in a pinch. We roasted red peppers the same way (on a stick). We've put a frying pan directly on the heat diffuser insert and that worked, too, although we'll need a pan with an offset handle because the drop is several inches.Instead of ordering a cover, we just tented the grill grate with heavy-duty foil and put a kid on duty to make sure it didn't blow away.I was puzzled that other reviewers were making such a big deal about the carrying case, but on receipt we found that it deserves the praise: heavy-duty rubber-coated nylon, with a pocket for the grates and diffuser elements, and everything tucks neatly inside. The Volcano is hefty enough that it's nice to carry it around with a handle (it's not a backpacking item). It cools quickly and can be cleaned/stored shortly after the meal. We're using it with the Amazon-recommended adapter for the 1-lb bottle, purchased separately.

Does it all! Great for grilling dinner and then enjoying a crackling fire with a cocktail.
My husband and I love our Volcano. We wanted something we could use in our pickup camper travels and this fit the bill. We have grilled all kinds of foods and cooked up pancakes, eggs, etc. on it using propane and enjoyed many fireside chats while a small crackling fire was going. The portability is so nice, as it collapses and has a bag with handles to carry it. We keep the accessories in separate plastic bags and they fit fine in the larger storage bag, without getting it all dirty. As long as you're not rough with it, the Volcano should last for years.

so no backpacking though it would be good to take along in the trunk of your car
We've used the Volcano stove twice to make beans and wieners and roast marshmallows. It was quite enjoyable to 'camp out' in our back yard. The Volcano stove is very versatile with three different fuels. It is also quite heavy, so no backpacking though it would be good to take along in the trunk of your car. If you are headed to a location where dry wood is available, there would be no need to take any fuel along at all. One thing I did not like was that the grill became quite rusty after use. I rubbed it with oil so hopefully that will prevent further rusting.

A Hot Stove
The Volcano arrived amazingly quickly though somewhat flattened on one side likely due to shipping. Visually it was exactly as advertised. Upon initial use using wood, the Volcano heated up very fast. Smaller wood logs a definite consideration if using as a fire pit. I used about 16" and they were a tad large. The adhesive decals on the sides peeled off easily as the Volcano became warmer. The sides and bottom of the volcano also became too hot to handle so use caution about placing on combustible surfaces as some websites indicate is possible. Cooking/grilling with wood may be a challenge not just due to the size of wood used. Wood would be difficult to add if pots/pans/Dutch oven were in place. Charcoal and propane may not have this difficulty. Also it took well over an hour after the fire was out to be able to handle the stove barehanded. The bottom pan suffered discoloration and paint flaking but that was to be expected. I look forward to taking car camping as the newest cooking gadget but probably will be using in propane mode for temp control. I'll also try to see if I can master cooking with the Volcano using wood.
