dewalt dw660 rotary tool
Excellent impressive tool -- but I expected this from DeWalt and I wasn't disappointed. Years ago I had purchased a rotozip brand tool and it burned out on first use. I had to finish what I was doing with a regular single speed Dremel Tool. So I was turned off by rotary tools. However I had a lot of cutout work to do -- carpenters lace type trim work for the porch and gable trim. I hate a scroll saw because of the pain of having to unhook and rehook the blade every time you start to cut in a new area; and I did not want to pay the expense of a band saw; I just would not use it often enough to justify and my jig saw just wasn't maneuverable enough in tight patterns. So I went to Amazon and asked for rotary saws to see what was out there and BAM -- there it was DeWalt! I don't care what anyone else says I LOVE DeWalt tools; they have never let me down. From my 10" table saw; 10" compound Miter saw; drills; sanders; planner; table router; trim router and now rotary saw my DeWalt tools have always served me well. This rotary saw cut through 3/4" hardwood and 3/4" treated exterior pine plywood -- yes folks, like a hot knife through butter. With the first cut I knew I had hit the jack-pot. There was no strain on the tool, it handled the wood effortlessly, and I had no trouble controlling it as I cut freehanded through the wood. The ring guide kept the blade perpendicular to the wood and the cuts were clean and smooth. I cut a lot of scallops; circles; scrolls; curls and whatnots through several pieces of 7 - 8 foot long boards and with this saw I did it fast. I bought just the saw because I did not know if it would work but I would advise people to also purchase the D-handle attachment you can get for it. I think it would make holding the tool more comfortable; especially if you are doing a lot of cutting. By the time I was finished I had cramps in my fingers for several days. And that is the ONLY complaint I have. I realize 7 foot long boards would have been very cumbersome to maneuver through a scroll saw or even a band saw and a jig saw just would have taken way too long. I did my whole project in one 2-day weekend. Thank you DeWalt! Thank you Amazon for getting it to me in less than 4 days! Oh and I forgot to mention, I am a 52 year old woman and I am proudly a woodworker with 23 years experience at the craft! So stand back -- look out -- I'm on fire now. When I get done the neighborhood will never be the same!

I really wanted to like this tool... (Revised review and rating)
OLD REVIEW, FROM APRIL 3, 2013 I had high hopes for this tool but, alas, I had to return it. To begin with, it kept losing the bit while cutting, which made it annoying to use and potentially dangerous. I assume I could have worked on this issue by tightening it with a wrench, but there was another, much more concerning issue: it was burning the plywood (!). As I was trying to cut a rectangle in a piece of plywood in my attic, I quickly noticed that smoke was coming out of the plywood. I decided to stop using this tool altogether when I saw the first amber on the wood. I can't work with a tool that could potentially cause a fire in my house -- not worth for one, two, or a dozen rectangles in my plywood. Sadly, this tool is back in the Amazon box and will be returned soon... REVISED REVIEW, SEPTEMBER 6, 2014 I recently re-purchased this tool (I had returned the one purchased last year). I intended to use it on sheetrock this time, a seemingly more appropriate use than that of my original attempt last year. I must say that I am very impressed. I was able to cut a perfect rectangle for my electric box with virtually no effort and almost no mess. Considering that this was my first attempt, I was really happy with my experience. This tool works just great, only not on any material. Plywood certainly is not in the list of materials it can cut through, but it can certainly cut through sheetrock like butter. This time I'll keep it!

Works well
I have used RotoZips before but never owned one. I decided I needed something for a project, so I settled on this. I bought this being corded on purpose. It is nice because I don't have to swap out batteries, and saves a few bucks. AC motors tend to be more durable and powerful too. I run a heavy-duty extension cord from another room that I am not drywalling and barely notice the inconvenience. The depth gauge doesn't always stay in place, but works well enough. Be careful, this has a powerful motor considering it is designed for chewing through drywall. I was cutting around a receptacle box and it got away from me, cutting a bit too much. I later mudded over the gap so it is not the end of the world, but the result would have been better had I expected this thing to take off.

Good, Powerful Cut
Spent some time researching between this and the comparable RotoZip model. The RotoZip had way too much marketing with it (infomercial type of advertising) which is why I went with this. The multiple attachments for the Rotozip sort of scared me as I've seen these kinds of tools come and go. It may well be just as good or better. Just received this tool yesterday. Wanted to test on a piece of 3/4" plyboard to assess the power, speed, etc. Used 1/8" RotoZip multipurpose bits. Just a note on these, the Dewalt ONLY takes 1/8" OR 1/4" bits. Be careful when buying bits as the Rotozip line of bits also comes in a 5/32" bit, which will NOT fit in this drill. Not sure if I understood the directions on how to insert or remove a bit using the lock and unlock buttons. I found it easier just to get an open ended socket wrench to do these functions. Will go back and read to see if I missed something. Tested a cutout for a low voltage install. Overall, very pleased with the power, and speed at which I was able to make the cutout. Did two cutouts and each took no more than a minute, which was very nice considering the thickness of the board. Would imagine that it would go even faster on thinner material. Did notice that the dust did go all over the place, as noted in other reviews for this product. HOWEVER, given the power that this has and the speed in which it cuts, I'll gladly spend the extra 2 minutes with a shop vac instead of getting a shoulder workout with a handsaw. Overall, very pleased with first impression and test.

Good price for a tool that works as advertised!!
My basement was flooded by the worst flash floods since the house was built 23 years ago, and this saw was perfect for cutting the bottoms of the dry wall off. It went right over the studs and the drywall came off in big strips. Highly recommend!

The Right Tool for the Job!!
I bought this tool for a bathroom remodel where I needed to cut out a tub surround to replace the tile and backer board with Durrock, Easy backer, or similar. I've fought through drywall removal by other methods for years but for this job, I decided I needed something quick and easy ... and this tool did exactly that. Using a plunge bit, the drywall was cut cleanly and QUICKLY - completely cut out an entire 3-wall tub surround in under 5 minutes! It left me asking myself "Why did I wait so long to buy this?" Even if I only had one bathroom remodel (or similar), it is well worth the price to buy this. It was easy to cut straight lines, stay on the lines I had marked, cut curves and ensure I was only cutting through the depth of the drywall. The cutting depth guide is easy to set accurately and stays in place (no shifting) during cutting. This tool would be easy to use for a DIYer through pro level. I opted for the corded model which worked fine but if you are doing a lot of remodeling, you might consider the cordless version. I rated it a 4 for versatility because it seems to be pretty specific to cutting drywall but I might find other uses, otherwise, this is rockstar tool to have in your arsenal.

Plenty of Power, however bit changing system terrible
I make a living with DeWalt power tools so I had high hopes for this thing. As several reviews have stated, power and speed is not the issue - in fact, the RPM is so high it is in danger of igniting any combustible material you might be cutting. I noticed smoke roiling out of a piece of MDF and I think the bit may have started a fire had I not let up. Included bit is garbage, replace it/ throw it away and don't waste your productive time while working. Also you are better off using a wrench to tighten the bits rather than this Rube Goldberg-esk "tool free" bit changing system - also garbage. Mine was broken within the first twenty minutes of using the tool out of the box: Both buttons have to be depressed simultaneously and then rotate the plastic collar to tighten the chuck. I did not notice that the button on the plastic collar (closest to the chuck) did not spring back up the third time I tried to use it so it was still engaged on the shaft. When I plugged it in and turned it on it made a HORRIBLE sound as the shaft nut ground its way into the plastic collar and spring loaded built-in metal spanner wrench. The collar shifted and froze and will no longer move, however the tool is still functional. Bits have to be changed with a wrench only and the plastic collar is just a decoration now. I am NOW ACTUALLY READING THE REVIEWS much more carefully - as I purchased this on the nearly five-star statistic rating. Contemplating returning for another one, but not sure at this point.

Wrong plug and Voltage for the UK
It's made in Mexico for the American market. Operates on 110v and plug is a 2 pin rated at 10A 125v. Not suitable for the UK.

Really solid tool for drywall
This cut-out saw is really solid. Sometimes Dewalt is hit or miss in my opinion, as are all the big name tool makers, but they got it right here. Do your research by individual tool and you'll be much happier than just going with one brand and sticking with them bar none. In this case, it's more than powerful enough to handle it's designated tasks, it's well shielded against dust in it's critical parts such as the contacts inside the switch. It's a well thought out tool with available accessories to expand it's usability. But in this form it's perfectly suited to do what I need. It's lasted a good while with frequent use, can't complain there. And in terms of noise, for a high speed motor it's surprisingly quiet. I'd recommend it whole heartedly for a professional, or do it yourself type... priced right for either.
