Discover what happened before WATCHMEN as writer J. Michael Straczynski is joined by Andy Kubert and the legendary Joe Kubert to take flight with the gadget-savvy vigilante known as Nite Owl! And then in BEFORE WATCHMEN: DR. MANHATTAN, JMS teams with fan-favorite artist Adam Hughes on the all-powerful super-man Dr. Manhattan. For Dr. Manhattan, past, present, and future are one and the same. But as he observes the events of his life, do they remain the same? Or are they changed? The very fact of his existence may have altered the nature of what will or will not be... Collects BEFORE WATCHMEN: NITE OWL #1-4 and BEFORE WATCHMEN: DR. MANHATTAN #1-4. Review: A great Graphic Novel read - I am rereading the Watchmen comic series and as always I can never be bored as I thoroughly enjoyed reading these comics once again. The drawing, the plot and story line has endeavor to grip me from the opening page til the end. Overall a great read of a Graphic Novel book. N Best wishes Review: Surprisingly Enjoyable - While the pair of stories compiled in this book don't quite justify their own existence by adding to Watchmen, they are enjoyable and interesting stories in their own right. Nite Owl's story is a little on the nose, but it adds believable and interesting backstory to the character. Dr. Manhattan's story is broadly more successful I think and I would imagine was a challenge to the creators to try and devise. Worthwhile.

Before Watchmen: Nite Owl/Dr. Manhattan
Time is moving on and a new generation of heroes rise to replace the Minutemen. Hollis Mason passes the mantle of Nite Owl on to Daniel Dreiberg, who is partnered with the vicious Rorschach and forms a crime fighting duo who become geared and respected in equal measure. Following a nuclear accident, Dr. Jon Peterman is irrevocably altered and known by his new name, Dr. Manhattan. These two Straczynski stories suffer from the "unnecessary prequel" curse, but when read in isolation have some good characterisation and excellent artwork. Straczynski also attempts to develop the brooding world of the 'Watchmen', especially in the sequence featuring Schrödinger's Cat.

expanding the Watchmen universe
This is the “Before Watchmen: Nite Owl / Dr Manhattan” collection. It's part of DC Comics 'New 52' saga, and serves as a follow-up project to the phenomenally successful “Watchmen” mini-series (later published as a graphic novel) by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons from the 1980’s. “Before Watchmen” is, for the most part, concerned with prequel stories involving both central and secondary characters of “Watchmen”. The “Before Watchmen” project consists of several mini-series, and includes: ‘Minutemen’ (six issues) - Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke ‘Silk Spectre’ (four issues) - Writers: Darwyn Cooke and Amanda Conner. Artist: Amanda Conner ‘Comedian’ (six issues) - Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: J. G. Jones ‘Nite Owl’ (four issues) - Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artists: Andy and Joe Kubert ‘Ozymandias’ (six issues) - Writer: Len Wein. Artist: Jae Lee ‘Rorschach’ (four issues) - Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: Lee Bermejo ‘Dr. Manhattan’ (four issues) - Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artist: Adam Hughes ‘Moloch’ (two issues) - Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artist: Eduardo Risso ‘Dollar Bill’ (one-shot) - Writer: Len Wein. Artist: Steve Rude These 37 issues draw on the classic “Watchmen” publication in many important ways, seeking to expend, enrich and deepen that fictional universe. While “Before Watchmen” lacks both the originality and genius that defined Moore and Gibbins’ work, it’s nonetheless a serious and substantial contribution to the saga (and is amongst the better of the instalments of ‘The New 52’ franchise). This particular book brings together the 8 issues which, separately, concern both Nite Owl and Dr Manhattan. Additionally, it includes the Moloch stories. If you enjoyed “Watchmen” and you’re interested in reading more about these characters and the dark and often grim world they occupy, then I recommend this book. There are three other collections of 'Before Watchmen' (available in both hardback and paperback).

Outstanding!!
Outstanding!!! NITE OWL Great story, adds in Rorschach and some mysterious Madame that takes the story in predictable but fun twist. It also shows how Dan dealt with Hollis, and the dark things that happened while in the Minutemen. Hollis still was a hero, still a tough, honest and fair guy. Rorschach, outstanding in the story. DR. OSTERMAN Some of the best artwork I have seen in a Graphic Novel. While the story is sort of confusing with all the quantum physics, it does have some good portions to it. Dr. Manhattan left the earth to do what? You'll see . . you'll see something weird. Even though Watchmen is a series written by an Atheist, there are so many Christian parallels between evolution and creation, GOD and being no god, a powerful story looking at those with faith and those without. GOD and man . . that is what Watchmen is about . . the atheist answer, the Christian answer, Grace for us Christians, and hope for Atheists.

I loved it!
I am a huge graphic novel/comic genre fan already, and fairly recently finished The Watchmen cover-to-cover again. Just like the initial plunge, I was impressed by nearly all aspects of the novel. The only thing I found myself wanting were the histories and back stories that created these troubled super-people, and truly I thought these chapters were not-to-be or would show up years from now poorly done or lacking the same 'je nes c'est quoi' found in the original. I am happy to be wrong, entirely and at last.
