Worth the small price for a 16 channel DVR/security camera device.
I got this unit to replace an older 8 channel system. It was easy to simply transfer the hard drive from my old unit to this one (a 500GB) where it auto formatted the drive on boot up. I like that this one also has a built in cooling fan that the other did not. It was relatively easy to setup after boot by following the on screen prompts. Though I did go back later and change some of the settings. It comes with a mini cd that contains software for viewing the camera system on a computer. Also software for playing the video files it saves of your security cameras. The android app that you can get from the play store (don't know about ipad/ipod since I don't do apple products) is easy to use as well. If you don't want to use your system over the internet simply tap on the little orange icon that looks like a mini monitor at the bottom left on the android app instead of signing up or logging in to their cloud site. All in all I'm happy with my purchase - so far 😉.

Drop-In replacement for Night Owl, with free remote access
I moved to a home that came with a hardwired Night Owl camera system. But without the original password for the DVR, the system was basically useless and could not be factory reset. This 4-channel XenoCam DVR was a very easy replacement and immediately recognized my wired BNC video cameras. I cannibalized the disk drive out of the Night Owl unit, and XenoCam quickly initialized it and started recording. The provided app is basic, but provides pretty good functionality to watch live and archived video. I especially like that remote access is free, even when you are away from your home network. Big brands like Ring require a monthly subscription to let you watch your cameras.

Thanks a lotFor the inconvenience.
Really disappointed with this unit putting in the hard drive screw holes did not match up with a hard drive there was no fan in the unit got everything connected meaning the cameras the power everything was working fine for about 30 minutes then the AC power supply stop working star rating of one for this unit not worth what I paid for.. Now I'm waiting on a new power supply I got to waste my time just to ship back the power supply..

First Impressions
Selected the Xenocam 8CH 5M-N/1080N version for $59.99Received today. Initial setup was a breeze ... but displayed none of the 4 ONVIF Cameras. Reviewed the very, very small foldout 'manual' that referred to a step 7 in the setup process, of which there was none. I found some vague references to switching it to Hybrid mode, but nothing anywhere clearly explained exactly how to do that. Not in the 'manual' the various menus, or the product page hereMore or less out of frustration, I started clicking on stuff and found the page pictured below. There is no text on it at all as far as the different modes or which is 'Hybrid'. I clicked on the bottom option with the 8 to the far right under the 5M, then OK. The system rebooted and my ONVIF cameras all appeared.along with a screen of all of their IP addresses and other information. The highlighted option with the 16 under the 1080P also works. The selection under the Local 5M-N does not display IP ONVIF cameras.I suppose they expect you to infer that the two under the IP header are what you need to select, but they don't really explain that anywhere for those of us not fully familiar with the system.I also can't figure out where to enable the On-Screen displays of time and channel number;/name for a couple of the cameras.

Works great
Originally left a bad review as I lost signal to the cameras 3 months in. Turned out to be the camera power supply. This unit works perfectly fine, does exactly what it says it will.

Works but is mostly a piece of crap
Yes, it does work very hard to watch back footage because it will not scroll smoothly and playback Very very slow. If you’re looking to catch a thief, you will waste so much time using this thing it makes it not worth it.
