These are amongst the most essential jazz recordings of the 1950s. They succeeded in establishing both Miles Davis and John Coltrane as modern jazz leaders and enabled both men to build fascinating musical careers from that point onwards. All the quintet's studio recordings for Prestige are included here - comprising the complete contents of five original LPs (The New Miles Davis Quintet, Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin') together with the extra track "Round Midnight". The reviewer who complains about the absence of "Steamin'" must have a different set, because the LP is definitely here in full. There is also a bonus CD with 8 live recordings, which were previously only available on bootlegs. All in all, the four CD set is one that anyone interested in modern jazz cannot really do without.

As I tried to inform you there is a fault with disc 1 of this Miles Davis box set.The disc malfunctions when it is nearly at the end, it is most frustrating.I have tried 3 different CD players and the problem occurs on each at the same point. I do not wish to return the whole package from Australia, so I am very disappointed. This will make me think again about purchasing further items.

Vinili silenziosissimi , qualità audio superba. Un capolavoro senza mezzi termini. Uno dei cofanetti più belli degli ultimi anni.

Even if you previously owned some of these recordings, this set makes a compelling buy case. And it appears to be in right chronological order. LP's are pressed fantastically with a great overall tonal balance.

1955:Miles forme ce quintet fabuleux, triomphe au festival de Newport et signe un contrat avec Columbia.Pour solder son contrat avec Prestige,3 sessions sont organisées en Novembre 1955,Mai et Octobre1956.Ces enregistrements seront distillés ensuite par Prestige (Steamin,Workin,Cookin,Relaxin....),ils sont ici restitués ,par ordre chronologique dans les 5 premiers vinyles de ce 'Livre luxueux' .La qualité de la reproduction est très supérieure à l'édition vinyle de Workin et Cookin,éditée par Pathé au milieu des années 1960,et l'achat estrecommandé, même pour ceux qui comme moi possède diverses rééditions CD de ces enregistrements.

Über die Qualität der Musik braucht nichts mehr gesagt zu werden. Ich habe mehrere Varianten dieser Aufnahmen, auf Vinyl ebenso wie auf CD. Diese Box mit der chronologischen Reihung der Stücke ist optisch sehr gut gelungen, das Büchlein mit zahlreichen Fotos und einem erhellenden Text von Bob Blumenthal zu Stücken und Aufnahmesituation ist eine Freude. Das Beste aber ist der umwerfende Klang der Aufnahmen. Kaum vorstellbar, dass sie über 60 Jahre alt sind. Auch im Vergleich zu den früheren Editionen sind sie herausragend - transparent, klar, natürlich.Das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis ist überragend.

Al Miles/Jazz fans know these sessions. At least they thought they did. The quality of the recording on these disc is breathtaking.It may even surpass my collection of SACD recordings. I have gold pressings of these performance that don't match the enhanced natural sound of this box set. Great package with worthwhile commentary booklet + fourth cd has some good bonus performances. Over 4hrs of material. Great price! This will be the jazz cd of the year and one of the ones you'll will listen to for the rest of your life.
