Low maintenance magic
Review written in 2 parts: “prelude” describes my hair’s background for those who relate, “actual review” talks about my experience with the product. Prelude: Ok, this is my second ever attempt with mousse so grain of salt for the super-experienced, but this is amazing. I was never taught how to manage my curls. Grew up with it a la Hermione until I got my hands on my first hair straightener and that was it. I’ve put it up, straightened it and chemically straightened to help me out my whole life because it was just easier. I’m in my 30’s. I have zero clue what my curl pattern actually is. I’d never even heard the term until maybe 2 years ago. About half of my length is still “permanently straightened” with a Japanese hair perm, which on my hair = moderately tamed. All this to say, I have no idea what I’m doing and while I keep up with trims and use heat protectants, my hair is *pretty damaged* with a messed up curl pattern. Then TikTok started showing my curly hair stuff, particularly black hair TikTok, which is much closer to my hair texture and experience than anything else. My only other mousse experience was an absolute desperation buy trying to get my hair to relax while on a vacation much more humid than I’d bargained for. Sticky disgusting, crunchy and with impossible frizz. So after a crazy amount of time watching TikTok’s about course curly hair, I power-bought a bunch of the top recommended products, this being one of them. Giant leap of faith for a forever straightener. But my hairs about half way down my back now, keeping it up in the summer humidity is starting to give me headaches and if anything at all wound up just helping, I’d take it. Actual review: I tried this brand first of the 2 mousses I bought to try out because I’m familiar with the brand through their oils, scrubs and soaps, which I really love. I figured if there was a safe bet, it was this one. I over-researched the best ways to prep the hair and put it in, but it turns out I hardly had to bother. This is the easiest apply and go catch all of all time. You don’t need your hair sopping wet, you don’t have to section it, it doesn’t require anything before and you can brush it out. No stickiness, no crunch, no heaviness, no residue-feel and somehow, miraculously, no frizz. I could just strangle John Frieda. My first try with it I did all the things: applied it to super-wet detangled hair, scrunched it, did the plop method, diffused it and babied the life out of it. Came out great other than the dreaded triangle of my hair shape was obvious since I’ve been a straight cut girl forever. But even my super-abused curls came out. Could even immediately tell where the Japanese permanent straightening line sat. The curl sections just found themselves and I didn’t have to finger roll or anything. It survived through sleep. It looks so much prettier than I ever hoped. Soft and shiny. Clearly, this works. Like actually works. Without exaggeration, no hair product has ever immediately inspired this level of trust for me. I just kept staring at it because I couldn’t believe it. I’ve tried everything and can’t believe it was this simple the whole time. Ugh. I know my hair scares the life out of salons and they can’t be trusted to not give me a mullet when thinning, so I decided to give myself one now that I saw where the triangle shape of my hair sat without the frizz blur. Just whipped out my razor comb that I use for split ends and took out about half of my hair from the mid-length down. Super flipping soft and shiny after that, omg. And so much lighter. If you need a photo to visualize: look up Erika Badu. That’s my hair’s un-thinned natural volume size, just of a looser texture. Washed my hair and knowing how well this stuff worked, I dispensed with all the back breaking labor. Just used it like a detangler: put my hair up in a towel to get it to just damp, put the product in, brushed it through, put it up in a hair towel for about an hour, then let it out to air-dry. I can’t believe how good it looks and feels. Actually unreal. I even straightened my hair with it in and that’s by far the shiniest finish of my life. Like hair-commercial shiny. If you want something good enough to inspire a drastic haircut and become insta-loyal, this is the one. This is THE perfect product. I’m about to legit throw out a crazy amount of product that this instantly replaces. For my forever-straight girls out there that just need a freaking break, give it a shot. I know my hair isn’t your hair, but good god, if this works on my hair, $7 is worth the gamble.

best mousse to ever exist
i’ve used plenty of mousses and the original shea moisture coconut and hibiscus mousse is absolutely amazing, i pair it with curlsmith gel and the results are amazing, my hair stacks perfectly on top and has lots of volume, id definitely recommend. i have high density hair so this product doesnt have the most hold for me, but it pairs with other products extremely well. 10/10 product for sure this is the only shea moisture product that has worked for me though. it’s super healthy, and consistent with results. i will admit the newer version of this mousse is slightly different, and the results aren’t as voluminous and defined, but the original shea moisture (one on the left of the picture with the two mousse bottles) is absolutely amazing. definitely would recommend to anyone who wants defined yet bouncy curls with volume. i’m 15 and i’ve been using this product for over a year. i really wish they never ever run out of this original mousse bottle

Not as great as I hoped, but smells nice.
Must put on wet, not like gel where works on dry hair. I actually got because it was recommended to tame frizz day after permanent as you can get hair wet. Wasn't bad, but left a little crunchy. Using on wet hair now, I like that it doesn't leave hair crunchy or stiff like gel, but I don't believe it keeps the frizz down as well as other gels. I love the smell, it's not chemically at all. It leave my hair soft, but I don't know if I'll stick with it. I have very fine hair and if I don't have something that holds well it's too fly away. I use this an a generous amount of hairspray. Plus I use at leave half as much more of the foam than my regular gel, but it's half the cost. We'll see.

Natural feelin
I have large, fluffy, bouncy, insanely thick, extremely curly, crazy &#*&$! hair. This mousse is nice because it’s not crunchy. It. This is a nice product and helps encourage curls, but doesn’t tame them.I have to moisturize A LOT when using this. Here’s some other things that have helped: I use sheamoisture curly hair shampoo and conditioner. It leaves me feeling a lot cleaner and doesn’t freak out my hair. Sheamoisture curly hair mist is essentially hairspray and great for touchups after a nap or in humid weather. I keep one at home and one in my glove box. Shampoo only once every two weeks. Condition every day - leave in for at least 5 minutes, half rinse with warm water, then finish with cold. I use a lot of leave in conditioner. I use a scalp massager in the shower. It helps minimize conditioner and other product build up and keeps me clean. I always use it while my conditioner is “setting” in the shower. I started wearing satin bonnets to bed. This was by far the best decision I’ve ever made regarding my hair. I think EVERYONE should use them. It will change your life. I replaced all of my couch and bed pillow shams with satin shams. This made my life much easier. When my hair gets too dry (like when I shampoo) I work jojoba oil into it and sleep with a silk bonnet. I shower and condition the heck out of it. This helps a lot. I started drying my hair with a blow dryer. I’d always air dried before and had very few good hair days. So much better now. I only use cold air. I’ve completely stopped going to salons. I’m almost 40 and have easily gone to 50+ salons in my life. They have zero idea of what they’re doing. Thinning curly hair makes it frizzy and bushy. The products they suggest are nasty, crunchy, greasy, and gross. I use the unicorn horn cutting method at home. 5 minutes, a hair tie, some sharp scissors, and I have the best layers ever. I like sheamoisture products because they don’t try to change my hair or make it look like everyone else’s. They just enhance what I have.

Lovely and light
I’m on a journey to start wearing my hair naturally curly. I tried this mousse as a starter. I’ve loved it! It’s very lightweight and smells good. It’s not a strong hold mousse so great for beginners or those that don’t want serious crunch. Still lets my hair be soft and shiny while helping them stay in their curl. Doesn’t leave a heavy residue feeling when dried. Will continue to incorporate in my routine for the lighter days.

Natural curls with ringlets
Love this product. Brings out ringlets and my natural curls. No curling irons or brushes used, just a diffuser and my fingers.

6mon post perm and this product holds
SheaMoisture Curl Mousse for Curly Hair — 6 Months Post-Perm ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Okay so I’ve been using this for a while now and honestly? I wasn’t expecting much. Six months post-perm, my curls are still figuring themselves out, and I’ve gone through so many products trying to find something that doesn’t leave my hair crunchy or weighed down. This one actually surprised me. It smells great, it’s not loaded with a bunch of harsh ingredients, and when I scrunch it into soaking wet hair over my leave-in, my curls actually clump and look defined without feeling like I put product in them. The softness after drying is the best part — no hard cast, no stiffness, just bouncy curls. That said, the hold is just okay. If I’m staying home or having a chill day, it holds up fine. But the second there’s humidity or wind involved, it starts to loosen up pretty quickly. I also made the mistake of using too much at first and ended up with sticky roots, so I’ve learned to use way less than I think I need. It’s not a one-and-done product if you need serious hold all day — I pair it with a gel when I need more staying power. But as an everyday mousse for post-perm hair that’s still a little fragile? I keep reaching for it.
