Does this tarp block heat from the sun? (I ask because my kelty tarp does not and its like sitting in a greenhouse!)

Depends on the size of your hammock and how much you need around it. The 15 by 15 should provide you with adequate coverage. I myself purchased the 10 by 10 and this also should be enough coverage for a hammock. It all depends on how you want to set it up and how much room you figure that you will need...... This is one of the learning curves of camping!

Can this be used as a patio shade all summer?

I think it would be fine for that. Barring a major storm with high winds or large hail. The tarp i have has about 3 years of use on it as a shelter and is not showing any signs of extreme wear or sun damage

the tarp has plenty of webbing loops that help with tying down on multiple sides. You should be able to find a way to tie it securely but that depends on the person.
