"That prayer is most likely to pierce heaven which first pierces one's own heart." For the Puritans, prayer was neither casual nor dull. Their prayers were passionate affairs, from earnestly pleading for mercy to joyful praise. These rich expressions of deep Christian faith are a shining example of holy living. The Puritan combination of warm piety and careful intellect have fueled a renaissance of interest in their movement. This combination is on display in Piercing Heaven , a collection of carefully selected prayers from leading Puritans. The language in these prayers has been slightly updated for a modern audience while still retaining the elevated tone of the Puritans. With prayers from Richard Baxter, Thomas Brooks, John Owen, and many more, each prayer reminds us that heartfelt prayer is central to the Christian life. Review: Piercing Heaven Is a Delight. - To anyone interested in the spirituality of the Puritans, I recommend this book. The prayers are a pleasing potpourri of laments, proclamations, and salutations to the living God. Tastefully updated, the Old English of their original composition is moving and lyrical nonetheless, or even especially so. It's one of my wisest purchases.as of late. Review: One of the Best - This book along with the valley of the vision are two of the best Puritan books on prayer. While I think Valley of the vision is organized, better, it also uses more old English, which can make it a little slower to read. Personally, I like that. A different generation of English helps me to treat the prayers a lot more like a song which is great for meditation. This book is not that. This book is a collection of prayers from some of the Puritan, greats written in the more contemporary English. That makes the prayers very approachable and comfortable to read. While all of the prayers are great, the organization of the table of contents is just a tiny bit confusing. It's not very easy to find the specific prayer that you want unless you bookmark them somehow. Regardless, it is important for us to engage with the prayers, and the voices of generations of Christians that came before us. This is a fantastic way to deepen our own prayer life, expand our language of prayer to include things we otherwise would not pray about, and to recognize the greater Christian voice over the last several hundred years. The Puritans rooted their prayers in the scripture, and they are anchored in God's word. For any Christian, I think, engaging with historical voices, is an essential aspect of being a faithful disciple. I would recommend this book.

great thoughtful prayers
As relevant today as to the Puritans of old. You can use these as a starting place and change or add your own portions. I love this book. My prayer life has improved immensely and I’m closer to Jesus as a result.

A way for us to pray today
I liked everything about this book; because it shows us how to really pray to a living God! I loved it from start to finish. May God richly bless us all.

These People Knew How to Pray!
The prayers in Piercing Heaven... are published in themes. So, for example, if you are looking for a prayer for grace, you will find several. The Puritans did not pray casually. They did not talk to God the way most American Christians might talk to God. They were more formal, and their speech--especially to God--was full of self-condemnation. But some of them really nail our needs. Read, for example, the first prayer, a variation on what we know as the Lord's Prayer. Wow. These people knew how to pray.

A little disappointed
I was disappointed that the editor of this book did not keep the original language of the Puritans but instead modernized the text. Unfortunately, this is the trend. The original language is not difficult to understand if you’re willing to slow down but we want everything handed to us on a silver platter and not have to work for it. You lose a lot when you modernize the text. A better option is The Valley of Vision. I still gave it four stars because the actual content of course is excellent but it is a shame the editor did not let the Puritans speak in their own words.
