Portland Design Works Shiny Object CO2 Inflator - Bike Tire Inflator, Bicycle Accessories

I've tried some of the CO2 inflators where the cartridge is installed inside, but I never found any that I thought were really well made. So, for the last several years, I've carried three CO2 cartridges with the little aluminum adaptor that you use to directly connect the CO2 to the presta stem. You screw one end onto the presta stem, and the CO2 cartridge into the other end. Once the CO2 cartridge goes in far enough, it pierces the cartridge allowing the CO2 to flow in through the stem. These cylinders are small, and light, and that's why I carried them. But, they have two drawbacks, IMO...First, you only get one shot. Once you pierce the cylinder, it dumps everything at one time with no way to shut it off. And, once you pierce the cylinder, you still have to turn the cartridge a half or 3/4 of a turn to get it to bottom out...and you lose some CO2 while doing so, because it's also attached to your stem, and you're usually bent over on the side of the trail when you're using it. The PDW inflator addresses both of these problems. First, with the valve closed, you can thread the cartridge into the inflator while holding it in your hand...you don't have to have it already attached to the presta valve. And it's easy to get the cylinder fully threaded on after the cartridge is pierced, so you only lose a tiny amount of CO2 while doing do. Second, the valve works well. Its action is smooth, it allows you to vary the amount of gas that's being released, and it seals completely without having to tighten the valve an excessive amount. I've had to use it on the trail twice... once to air up a flat tire after putting in a new tube. And the other time, I used it to add a few PSI of air to a tire with a slow leak. The inflator allowed me to add air to the tire three times before the cartridge was spent, over the course of a couple hours. The device is nicely made, and has a quality feel to it. Yet, it's very small and light, and adds next to nothing to the weight you have to carry. I've since bought two more, one for my wife's pack, and a spare in case I lose one.

I've used MANY different CO2 dispensers, and the Portland Design Works Shiny Object has become my go-to. I have four road bikes, and I carry saddle bags with spare tubes and CO2 fillers in each. Over the past two years (I ride about 6,000 miles per year around New York City, Connecticut, and New Jersey), I've needed these little bad boys 8 or 9 times. They are perfect! The CO2 cartridges thread on easily and smoothly. The presta valve end seats perfectly with no air leaks. THE BEST feature is the ability to control CO2 flow into the tube. Other CO2 dispensers give you one shot to fill your tube. This one is better because it allows you to get a little air in the tube... then you can ensure the tube is seated properly inside the rime and tire... then fill it the rest of the way. It's incredibly small and light, so it doesn't eat up your precious saddle bag space. Buy this confidently! Portland Design Works is an incredible company with wonderful products.

I bought this a few weeks ago and had to use it today on my weekend bike ride. Worked superbly! I took 2 cylinders in my repair kit and it was a good idea. I was able to top of air a few times to get to a location to replace the tube in a shady spot. One cylinder fills the tire (700 mm) about twice. Second fill is not quite 70 psi but is plenty to continue your ride. A person could ask why mess with this when you could carry a pump. That may be a good choice also but the convenience/speed are more important to me as I usually bike in very hot weather in the south. That pumping after changing a tire on a hot day makes this a far better choice for me. Plus I love the simplicity and size. I read all the reviews before I bought this and was concerned about sealing it on the tire and perhaps losing all the gas from the relatively small cylinder. It's not a problem! Screw the cylinder and as it gets almost all the way on you will hear a little hissing as it seats on the seal. Just screw it on quickly and it will work fine. Make sure the black valve is closed snug, that's all that's required. Then put the tool over your tube valve, you may need to press the valve stem at its base to make sure it doesn't push into the tire. The tool seals on to the valve itself once it's seated. Next crack the black valve slightly and the tire will fill quickly. Then simply close it snug and pull it off the tire. I'd never done this before and believe me it is very easy. I notice a lot of people complaining about the seal, or worried about it coming off etc. I had no problem with this so either they've fixed the problem or maybe they got a defective unit. Mine worked perfectly. If your concerned bring a spare CO2 cylinder and you'll most likely find you don't need it the first time you use this tool. Great product! Great price!! I hope htis helps.

I have the worst luck trying to inflate tubes using my small tire pump that I have strapped to my downtube. I always end up snapping the valve stem about 50% of the time. I knew the time was right to finally get a CO2 inflator and I chose the Portland Design Works Shiny Object. It's a beautifully designed, perfectly functional CO2 inflator. The inflator is made of an alloy that is lightweight and about as small as it could possibly be yet still be useable. The Shiny Object works with threaded CO2 cartridges and the control knob lets you control the rate of inflation... a quick little on and off twist can deliver a short burst of CO2 into your tube for tube seating then you can give it a larger twist to fully inflate the tube. You must be careful though since this will inflate your tube quickly. The cartridge gets cold in the hand and you can actually blow out your tube if you over-inflate. Do not assume that your tube will need a full cartridge to be at the proper pressure--it will probably require less than a full cartridge. I really like the minimalistic yet functional design. It's small and doesn't take up much room. Highly recommended.

Easily one of my most important pieces of kit. Honestly for the last seven years of mountain biking I have never carried a CO2 inflator I only carry a traditional pump which did a great job when I needed it. But after converting to tubeless this last summer I have really realize some of the limitations of good hand. After Rolling a tire on a ride and having no luck with my hand come hi big and to research CO2 inflators, when I came across the Portland Design Works Shiny Object CO2 Inflator. Now there are dozens of different CO2 inflators on the market at many different price points but the thing that, I about the Portland Design Works Shiny Object CO2 Inflator was the fact that it was not only made in the United States it is also re-buildable and carries a lifetime warranty. So after getting a chance to use the Portland Design Works Shiny Object CO2 Inflator I am a CO2 inflator convert, I may never carry a pump again!!! It's so small and light and the unit can fit in a Jersey pocket or disappears in a large Camelbak. I never ride without it now although I would advise carrying the larger 20 g CO2 cartridges just for some peace of mind because they don't weigh that much more than the standard 12 g cartridges, this is especially important if you have 650B, 29, or plus size tires, as the 12 g cartridges may not be enough to attain your desired pressure.

The Portland Design Works Shiny Object CO2 inflator is small and easy to carry in your flat kit. It is solidly built and worked for me flawlessly today which is the first time I used it to inflate a tube on the road. You also need a CO2 cartridge to use the Shiny Object. I purchased the larger Genuine Innovations G2132 Threaded CO2 Cartridge. I threaded the Shiny Object onto the CO2 cartridge firmly. This is to insure the CO2 cartridge seal is pierced. I firmly held the Shiny Object onto the tire valve and turned the knob to the "On" position. You can hear the CO2 started flowing and you can control the CO2 flow easily with the "on/off" knob. When the tire felt firm I turned the knob to the "off" position. Be careful at this point because the cartridge gets very cold. I can compare it to handling "dry ice". This was easiest flat I ever repaired on the road due to the Shiny Object. I enjoyed not having to pump a hand pump hundreds of times. FYI, I've heard that tires filled with CO2 need to be pumped up sooner than when filled with regular air pump. I still would recommend the Shiny Object to a friend.

This is a nice lightweight inflator where the valve works perfectly and had never given me any roadside headaches. It is sturdy and well made. I have tried other inflators and in my opinion this one is the best at any price. As much as I ride and care for my tires, I do have to pull this out to do a quick flat fix several times a year. I have one on every bike I own. Just so you know I have some experience with this, I average over 6k miles a year for the past 14 years

This is not the first CO2 inflator I've had, but it is my favorite. It's very easy to use, with a flow control valve that makes it easy to get just a tiny bit of gas to give the tube shape or fill it full quickly once everything is in place. I've even used it to seat tubeless tires instead of one of those dedicated charge tanks, so truly the full range of flow control. Though if you're going to release the whole cartridge that fast, make sure you're wearing gloves or otherwise keeping your bare skin from touching the cartridge or the inflator - expanding gas gets cold fast and you don't want to get frostbitten hands. I bought my first Shiny Object to add to the seat pack of my second bike, and liked it so well I tossed the inflator I carried on my primary bike and replaced it with a second Shiny Object. I've had Shiny Object inflators in all my bikes roadside/trailside repair kits for several years now, and there's still no sign of wear on them. The oldest one has a bit of tarnish, but still works perfectly.
