I've been using the 2"x7" auger for the last couple of days and it does a great job. However, I am finding that the width of the holes is really tight for getting daffodil bulbs planted and I expect the same for the tulips I'll be planting in two days. Plus the recommended depth for some of the bulbs I'm planting is six to eight inches. Since this auger is only seven inches, it makes it difficult to get to the required depth.Many of the bulbs I planted needed to be just four inches down and were pretty small bulbs so this auger was just right for those. But having the 3"x12" auger in addition to this one would be the way I'd want to go for those larger daffodil and tulips bulbs.Also, I would recommend using some 12" kitchen tongs with this auger. Drill the hole, then use the tongs to clean out the hole since dirt will invariably fall back in to the hole. You can also use the tongs to place the bulb upright in the hole since you are not likely going to be able to reach down to the bottom to manipulate the bulb with your fingers.

It did a good job of making holes in red clay and rocks. Way better than a shovel! Easy to use

I purchased this with some reserved - I am glad (so far) used it to plant Zoysia plugs. I used a 18-volt Ryobi cordless drill-set the drill on low speed-I didn't want the dirt slinging everywhere. I stopped the auger half way for the zoysia plugs-A couple of times I went too deep!?! That wasn't an issue-justed pushed the dirt back in. I guess you could put a piece of tape on it -as the "stop mark".The unit wasn't fully welded between the spiral and the shaft. It was just tack welded at the top and bottom. I am not sure about the longevity or durability yet. The metal was NOT flimsy. I had to re-chuck the Auger once because it came loose. No issues after that. I installed 200 Plugs. The dirt did stick slightly -but hey is dirt and damp!?!!This auger works great. I bought it to put in some Zoysia plugs but works great for Fall bulbs as well.

I'd attach that 1/4-20 screwon extra handle on your electric drill if I were you.Works great but you have to be aware that if you hit a rock it can Jam causing the drill to jerk hard against your wrist.

We tried digging a few holes by hand but that was slow and WAY too much work in our hard Colorado clay soil. And with 35 bulbs to get in, I searched for a better tool and found this. What a life saver! I laughed happy at how easy almost every hole was. The 2" diameter and 7" depth was perfect in my Ryobi cordless drill. As others have pointed out, adjust the clutch somewhat loose as you WILL encounter roots and maybe rocks and this will keep the drill from jerking in your hands. Adjust your speed for the soil conditions. I kept a long spoon handy to dig out dirt that fell back into the hole. Then dropped the bulb in and covered with with a handful of good potting soil. Anyway this auger made this an easy job and it makes me want to plant twice as many bulbs next year just to use it again. Good tools are SO worth the money and this is one of those! You will be glad you bought it.

Many great reviews already, but I wanted to give another plug. I researched several similar products before choosing this one. It wasn't the cheapest, but I am very glad I picked this one. Very solidly built, I expect it to last many years.I purchased this auger last September in preparation for the fall bulb planting season. I planted over a hundred bulbs with it late last year, in very little time. One neighbor walked by, saw what I was doing, and said, "That's cheating!" I replied, "Yes it is, and I'm not the least bit ashamed!" I just used it again today to put in 22 more for this spring. Took about 15 minutes, which included planning where to put them, and clearing away the mulch for each hole. I have found it helpful to make sure an area of about 10 inches across is clear prior to drilling the hole, so that the dirt that comes up and out of the hole is easy to just push right back in on top of the bulb. If you don't clear that space, you have to sort the dirt out of the leaves or mulch or whatever else is there.As other reviewers have noted, be careful around roots, and also rocky soil can cause your drill to lurch a bit, so use a firm hold while drilling.

This is the first planting auger I have ever used. I planted about 150 bulbs in about 15 mins. That included dropping fertilizer in every hole and covering them up.I also used it to plant some peonies. What i like most about this was I had to go deeper than the auger could reach. I would simply dig multiple holes and pull away the dirt and then dig deeper and repeat until i got the depth I wanted. I then took all the dirt that I have excavated from the now 1’ x 1’ x 1’ and put if back in along with compost and bulb fertilizer. I then used the auger like a big mixer and it completely mixed the soils. This created an awesome planting medium.I will use this from now own for my planing needs. Also bought a 3” version.

Made bedding out plants much easier and faster. Also does good job breaking up the soil.

I use it with a cordless drill for installing 3' foot long, 2" posts in the ground. Works well in all soil conditions. Good quality.
