Not especially similar - there are only four resources, which are committed to four tracks (science, technology, military and exploration) up which you civilisation can advance as the game progresses. There is also a map, on which you can place tokens and explore unexplored hexes (a little bit like Carcassonne). It is more complicated than Seven Wonders by a long shot, but I can highly recommend Tapestry - it has beautiful pieces too.
