The Great Serum Race: Blazing the Iditarod Trail

This is a great, inspiring story. Appropriate for kids 5 or older. Too serious and involved for the younger crowd.

Easy read; written for children but has the true story surrounding the diphtheria epidemic in Nome. Contains the names of the mushers who participated in the dog sled run from Nenana to Nome as well as their portion of the trail.

This book took me back to about 5 year's time. At the age of 16, I was obsessed with the real life story of Balto. The Great Serum Race is a piece of American History that is seldom taught in history books today, and it is a marvelous tale of true sacrifice. Miller's re-telling of this great piece of American history is painted to life with Van Zyle's breathtaking paintings, and an accurate portrayal of the events of that great winter of 1925. It was a book I held dear to, and kept checking out of the library at the age of 16, because of the fact that it inspired me and motivated me as a child to want to become something. 5 years later, this American Tale still inspires me to do what I do best. When I received the book, it was brand new. It had a refreshing smell to it, and it brought me back to my past. I highly recommend this read to anyone interested in a lost piece of American History.

This was a very good rendition of the serum race of 1925 to save hundreds of people, especially children, from dying of diptheria. I recommend the book, especially for children. Pat Harris

Debbie Miller does a fine job of storytelling about the diphtheria epidemic in Nome in 1925 and what it took to get live-saving serum to the town when aircraft were not yet reliable enough to do the job. Those who enjoyed this book may also enjoy a fun, inspiring, and often very funny book told from the dog's point of view called Sojo: Memoirs of a Reluctant Sled Dog.

Nicely written -plan to utilize in my 6th grade curriculum.

Great for young and old alike. It helps us realize our true American spirit. We can overcome almost anything and the power and loyalty of the dogs makes us more gentle humans.
