This book is a game changer! It is filled with magnificent color images of some of the most astounding art by women artists thatI have ever seen! This should be the main text for every inclusive art history course!

Organized alphabetically by artist, this book contains the works of over 400 women painters, sculptors, photographers, mixed media, and performance artists spanning the last 500 years. For each artist, the book provides a reproduction of one of her major works, an ID of the work, and a brief narrative introduction to the artist. This book is amazing in its scope and the reproductions are captivating. While it does cover some of the same artists as its companion book, Great Women Artists, there is literally no repetition for the works covered are different. As a reader, though, if I could get only one of these great books, my preference is for the latter since it seems to offer a broader historical perspective, and I just prefer its artwork. (This book has too many contemporary photos of less than compelling subject-matter(s) for my taste.)

This is a definitive publication about women in the arts. Women have, forever, been held in lesser esteem than their male artist counterparts. There are so many women artists listed that no one who reads it can any longer ignore their importance to the art world.
