One of the better logic texts
I taught college-level logic for nearly twenty years. During that time the department used several editions of Hurley's text, culminating in the eleventh edition. I soon came to realize the value of this text, especially in comparison to some of the others I examined. It contains a wide variety of material (from informal fallacies to categorical propositions and syllogisms, from propositional to predicate logic, from analogical reasoning to probability and statistical reasoning), which makes it appropriate for both symbolic logic courses and critical thinking courses. It contains a large number of exercises at the end of each section, with answers to every third entry found in a key at the back of the text. While the Hurley text has been updated several times, the changes from one edition to the next have been minor, and generally are confined to small improvements and clarifications.

Be careful when buying used!
I bought this used from someone and do not blame them for listing the product but my version says that it is the eleventh version but it does not include every chapter or the answers in the back. I had no warning, there is none in the posting and the book itself hardly says anything. Be warned!

Beware
The used copy that I received contains only the first seven chapters. If you use the "Look Inside" feature and check the Table of Contents, you will see that there are 14 chapters. I'm not sure how you can verify that you're getting the complete book when you order a copy.

It's okay...
I compared this text to one my father used for his logic course from 20 years ago. I prefer his old text to this new modern one, but that's my personal preference. This text does cut out most of the stuff most instructors do not address anymore. So it's fine for the course I used it for.

Horrible! A Bulk of Chapters Missing!
Please, beware. I'm giving one star because I cannot give zero star! I purchased the book specifically so I can study logic symbols. Ironically, the book is missing chapters 4-8. 5 chapters! It's absolutely ridiculous! The table of contents goes like chapter 1,2,3,9,10,11,12,13 & 14, when these missing chapters were the biggest reasons why I wanted to purchase it in the first place. Extremely disappointed

DO NOT BUY...IT IS A RIPOFF!!!!
Do Not Buy!!!!...the book is missing chapters 4-8 and is useless...my son did not notice this until he got to those chapters during the course in school and now it’s beyond a 30 day return policy and they will not take the book back. I guess I should’ve read other reviews before I bought it as many other people of had the same issue. Save your money buy somewhere else!!!

A suprisely cool textbook
I was afraid that the book, which is required text, would cover these topics in lieu of the history of philosophy. But the book has selections, covering significant logicians, much like a history textbook would. I wanted it brand new and it arrived very quickly, stuffed in a box with another order, and one corner is straight creased <--blah ... but the book itself is reviewed here, not the smashed packing job, so I must say: this is a 5 star textbook.

Covers the bases; pricey
I bought this for my daughter for her logic course and the book seems decent but the cost is out of sight for a logic textbook. I guess I'm getting old but I do have some textbooks in my library from my college days that were under $10.I skimmed through the book and it looks like it covers the bases. I have Copi's book from the 1990s and it's quite readable though rather verbose. I also have Introduction to Logic by Suppes (under $20 I think) and Mathematical Logic for the Schools by Hill and Suppes which may be helpful; and a bunch of books on Discrete Structures and Artificial Intelligence that may be useful supplements for some areas. I'm a bit surprised that there isn't something out there that covers everything for a lot less - but maybe I shouldn't be as calculus textbooks run to $200 as well - even though the basic subject hasn't changed that much over the decades.
