Divine berbere!
Having grown up in Ethiopia, I often crave the rich blend of flavors found in the spice blend called berbere. I've tried to mix it myself, but it never seemed quite the same. I used to drive the 1-3 hours to the nearest Ethiopian restaurant and beg to buy a small bag. So when I finally realized I could purchase it online and have it delivered the next day through amazon, I went nuts! I ordered 4 different brands and started taste-testing. Although this is not the hottest of the four brands, it had the best blend (I thought) of salt and spice. It's organic, and lists ingredients of paprika, sea salt, cayenne, fenugreek, coriander, cumin, black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and turmeric. Can you imagine?! Divine! It tastes wonderful not only in traditional Ethiopian dishes, but also sprinkled on tomatoes and cucumbers or as a dry-rub for meat. Although I wish it came in a re-sealable bag, there's a lot for a good price. Now if amazon would only deliver injera, I'd be in heaven.

The best of the pre-made berbere seasonings we've tried
This is the best of the premade berbere seasonings we've tried. It makes our stew taste the most like it does at the Ethiopian restaurants we've been to. This 1 pound bag is a much better deal than the tiny jars.

Too spicy
Super spicy! And I have a high heat tolerance. I know it's supposed to be spicy but not like this.

Good spice with just a hint of heat
This is tasty berbere spice. It's smells great. It is a little spicy, I'd rate it a 3 out of 5 for typical white america. It's good for me and mild to my husband, but I'm not comfortable feeding it to my 14 month old (whereas she loves the mild dishes from our local restaurant), if that helps figure out the spicy factor. I still can't nail my recipes as good as our local ethiopian restaurant, but her spice and dishes are her own family recipes, so that's hard to match. I'm sure it's purely subjective, but I feel like I seem to be missing a little something from this spice (but it could be that I'm just missing nitter kibbeh) Otherwise, I like it and will be buying again. I wish they made a mild version so I could feed my baby and in laws.

Great for gourmet cooking.
I do a lot of gourmet cooking so I keep a well stocked kitchen of spices and seasonings from around the world to ensure I have what I need for any given recipe. I buy in 'batch' sizes and store them in glass jars. This spice is full of flavor, and a great value. I use it for sprinkling on fish, vegetables and just experimenting.

This stuff makes me so happy.
Disclaimer: I don't know what 'authentic' is. There's a delicious friendly Ethiopian restaurant at the end of my block, and growing up my parents made sure I was exposed to seemingly every world cuisine they could, but I don't have vivid childhood memories of grandma cooking this sort of thing. That said, I cannot get enough of Frontier's berbere blend. I sweat chopped onion and minced garlic with butter and/or oil for half an hour, add berbere and lentils and water, simmer for another half hour, and it results in a fantastic lunch all week for like forty cents a serving. The depth of flavor is incredible and the price totally reasonable compared to any other option I've found. The trickiest bit is moderating it to avoid nuking taste buds for anyone who prefers a milder dish, but if you're looking at berbere in the first place you probably know what you're getting into. So good.

The Best
Finding good Berbere spice mix is difficult. Knorr's had a wonderful blend, though they discontinued it. I have been search for something near as good. This is it. A wonderful, rich blend - deep red, and wonderful aroma. Could not wait to try. A very full flavor, very complex, perfect balance of tastes. I was worried when I saw paprika as the first ingredient. But this is not bland at all. Simply delightful. AND it is not overly hot. I use a 2:1 berbere to extra hot pepper powder in my recipes, and it is perfect for me. I like it hot, and even then it is not overly hot. Try it without adding extra hot pepper. I am sure you'll love it. 1 lbs of spice mix is a commitment indeed, but it is very much worth it if you want rich, complex favor.

Spice I didn't know that blew me away
I bought this on spec based on some tasty sounding recipes I spotted. I wasn't disappointed. Fantastic flavour. I would caution if you can't take too much heat. Reduce the amount suggested in the recipe as this has a great kick to it. Amazing smell when it's cooking too. Definitely on my dinner rotation now.

excellent spicy flavour!
Our last source of good berbere spice stopped selling it, and we couldn't find the real stuff blended locally, so we tried this. Very happy to report that this is the real & spicy berbere, red in colour, and a little goes a long way. We use it for Ethiopian dishes as well as in other meals that need a kick. Highly recommended!
