NO REINS [LP VINYL]

Best vocals of any pop/rock band
This release, with John Farnham singing lead, displays the best harmonies you will hear in pop/rock music. That and the writing give No Reins a Queen-esque feel on many of the tunes. No Reins and Playing to Win did not do well, and Farnham (the biggest selling artist of all time in Australia) has been blamed by some. It may have more to do with a change toward more keyboard-based tunes. Regardless, the gent on keys, I believe his name is David Herschfelder, is a great musician.I think this and PTW are the best LRB have ever done.

UNDERRATED Album
Wow. What an underrated album. I've been listening to this album on and off from 1986 to today. Every song is excellent in its own way. Forever Blue, Thin Ice, How Many Nights and Face in the Crowd stand out to me. It's not often that I like every song from any one album, but this one is one of the few. I've read that Johm Farnham was ready to leave the band as this album was being made and didnt put his best foot forward. If this true, then when at his worst, he still bests most because his vocals are nothing short of phenomenal. If you are an LRB, John Farnham fan or just like the 80's and haven't listened this album yet, you're missing out.

A creative peak, commercial disaster
This, the third of 3 albums with John Farnham as lead vocalist almost reaches the heights achieved on 1978's superb "Sleeper Catcher". Unfortunately neither the album or it's single, "Time For Us" made any impression on the charts whatsoever. The songs are uniformly strong, with band leader Graham Goble turning in some of his best tunes ever, particularly with "No Reins On Me" and the catchy "It's Just A Matter Of Time". New drummer Steve Prestwich hands them his classic Cold Chisel ballad "When The War Is Over" and Farnham nails it, making this easily the definitive version. Bassist/vocalist Wayne Nelson (Best known for handling lead vocals on the 1981 smash "The Night Owls") doesn't let the side down with his contributions ("Time For Us" and "Thin Ice") either.Shortly after this album Farnham decamped to rekindle his solo career, which reached greater heights than ever in his native Australia. Original lead vocalist Glenn Shorrock returned to the fold for a couple of lacklustre albums making this the last great LRB album. If you only know the hits it may seem a departure from the familiar, but it will surely be a welcome one. Certainly if you are a fan of John Farnham this album should be in your collection - these are the best songs he's ever sung.

A Rare Treat!
As a fellow customer wrote, John Farnham is one of the best vocalists out there. This unfortunately unsuccessful commercially album is one of their best, along with "The Net." Pick a song, it's great. "When the War Is Over," "No Reins," "Forever Blue," "It's A Matter of Time," it doesn't matter which one. They are simply fantastic, and this is a tremendous package! LRB fans, check out some of John's solo efforts. I recommend "Romeo's Heart," "Age of Reason," and "Whispering Jack," particularly. Even his early, early stuff like "Johnny Farnham" and "A John Farnham Christmas" are good for his fans. John obviously gave LRB its best lead vocalist, and it's a shame they're still not together!
