Can this test for an audio signal only using the female end of the tool at the male end of a XLR snake, or are both ends of tool required?

You need both tools to test a cable in that manner. If the male end is connected to a mic input with phantom power, you need only the male tool to test the cable. There are other tools which can detect a mic or line signal from the male end of the cable.

I own the xlr sniffer tool .. i was told they make the same kind for 1/4" ts and trs ! where can find this one ?

The SoundTools DMX Sniffer/Sender is a 5 PIN tester that tests pins 1-3 for continuity.

How long of a run is this tester rated for?

When testing standard XLR cables, 1000 feet is generally recommended. We have successfully tested lines up to 2000 feet. A fresh battery is highly recommended if testing long distances.
