SmartCat All Natural Clumping Cat Litter - Chemical and Dust Free - Alternative to Clay and Pellet Litter - Unscented and Lightweight - 5 Pounds

This is long, but I needed to share my experience with other cat pawrents. This is the best litter I’ve ever bought, hands down. I hated regular clay litters because of the dust and strong ammonia smell. I wanted something flushable because I detest having cat waste smell in a trash bin. I originally started using a popular flushable brand made from corn. That brand satisfied my need for less mess and stink, but it still smelled a little funky after about a week of use, even if I scooped every day. Plus I would still find dusty footprints on my furniture (gross). The clumps would fall apart and I wouldn’t be able to continue using it by just adding a bit more on top after scooping because the bits of urine left behind would eventually contaminate the whole box. It was also pretty expensive for the amount I would go through on a monthly basis with just one smol bb at home. Looked around for other less smelly options, and decided to buy a small bag of this to try, mainly because it is made of grass, and hence, flushable. Best decision ever. Overall the smell of the litter straight out of the bag is better than the corn litter. There is ZERO dust. I still occasionally find litter tracked right outside the box, but less than other brands I’ve used before. I find that’s pretty unavoidable with most litters imho. A sifting mat outside the box helps immensely. It also clumps SO well. Urine congeals the litter into a rubbery mass that is so solid that I actually have to break it up in the toilet with my scooper before flushing. Others have said this litter can harden and make it difficult to scoop if you don’t scoop every , and sometimes I notice it does stick to the bottom, but I scoop frequently so it hasn’t been an issue for me. I saw some other reviews say that this has a stale garbage smell if you don’t scoop every day. I was sick for a few days (2-3) and didn’t scoop as often as usual and eventually I noticed a bit of a weird smell. I am pretty sensitive to strong cat urine/feces smells. I would say I noticed more of a smell from the poo than the urine. To me it almost smelled like a diaper genie that needed to be changed. But honestly, if you’re scooping every day it shouldn’t be an issue- at least in my experience. If you read this far, I implore you- just buy it. You won’t regret the purchase 👌🏻

I have 3 cats and scoop their boxes daily. Getting right into it. Pros and cons. Pros: - fantastic clumping, just as hard as clay. No crumbling or scraping. - nearly ZERO dust. What little dust there is doesn't seem to affect my or my cat's asthma. - odor control is fantastic without the need for added scent or deodorizer. Great for people prone to migraines, asthma, or just with sensitive noses. - monthly box deep cleans are a breeze since I don't have to scrape concrete cat p*ss off the sides. - extremely lightweight, no need for my husband to lug it around for me. Cons: - tracks pretty badly. Since it's so lightweight, it does stick to the cats' paws, and even with a litter mat it tends to scatter around. - odor control is great, but not a miracle. It covers urine smell perfectly, but not always poo, especially if your cat refuses to bury it like mine does. This really isn't an issue if you scoop daily and have enough boxes. - packaging is a bit annoying, I prefer something with a handle and spout for easy pouring. - packaging has a picture of a cat seemingly attacking another cat, which is confusing. Are they fighting over who gets to use the poop sand first? This product will NOT cause your cats to turn on each other.... At least I don't think it will. This may be a pro if you or your felines are fans of MMA. Summary: After my cat was diagnosed with asthma, I struggled to find a dust-free litter that actually did a decent job AND one that was affordable. I tried every single natural litter under the sun before I tried SmartCat; I wish I had tried it sooner. Not only is his asthma better controlled, so is mine! I don't think we realize how much the dust fills our airspace. I now prefer this over my previous favorite litter, which was clay. While my asthmatic cat didn't want to use it at first, slowly transitioning allowed us to make a full change over to SmartCat. I will never go back to the old stuff. If you can overlook the tracking issue, it's worth it.

Overall, I like this litter. It has a pleasant, natural scent -- it's not scented/perfumed but has its own smell that makes me think of wheat, but I'm not totally sure what it's reminding me of. One or both of my cats exclusively pees in the front and back of the litter box, so those two spots have to contend with all the urine. What I've found is that SmartCat doesn't clump quite as well with this volume of pee compared to the clay litter I most often use, Precious Cat. However, this also means that it's easier to get litter off the sides of the box when scooping. As for odor control, it's comparable to Precious Cat but I think Precious Cat might have a little bit of an edge here because it clumps a lot more and probably contains the odor a bit more as a result. Dust-wise, I haven't noticed much of a dust cloud when pouring it. Lastly, the main con: the tracking. This litter is lightweight and will be kicked and tracked WELL outside the box, unless you have a covered box. I do not as one of my cats refuses to use covered boxes, so my solution was basically making a litter pad landing strip and vacuuming more in the area. I may switch back to Precious Cat but still like SmartCat and would use it over Precious Cat in some situations. If you have a cat or other pet that eats clay litter, SmartCat would be a great alternative and shouldn't be too difficult for cats to adjust to. My cats had no qualms about at all after years of being used to grittier clay litters, but YMMV, of course.

By far the absolute best all-natural cat litter I have ever tried. I have to say, for the past two years, I have put our little "girls" through a lot of changes, experimenting with different locations in our home, litter boxes, and -of course- cat litter. They have been extremely tolerant, even our pickiest one. We went from different clumping litters -clay, corn, walnut- to some weird pellet setup I saw at my local pet store, and back again. I was finally thinking the walnut shells would be my only option to provide a litter to our girls which would be: 1. comfortable and stress-free, 2. non-allergenic for all of us, 3. safe for the environment. The fact that the walnut litter was still creating a lot of work for me with its inability to clump properly, and that it smelled horrible after a just a few uses due to the little bits of waste that fell apart while trying to clean it -$$$ wasted!- I figured would be something I'd just have to deal with. Then I saw a commercial video, and a personal review video, and I had to try SmartCat All Natural Clumping Litter. I am SO incredibly glad I did! I cautiously bought a 5 lb. bag to try it, and liked it so much that I just added the 20 lb. bag to my regular monthly subscription deliveries. This will sound weird, but my first impression when I opened the bag was that it smelled like rice. My husband said it smells like oatmeal. It also clumps like rice or oatmeal powder, with an almost glutinous consistency at first, and then it dries like a brick. I usually clean the litter box twice a day or more, but I let it go last night to see how much damage the girls would do to the clumps. None! They dug around a lot and yet everything was neatly covered and the clumps kept their shape nicely. No tiny little pieces! And no foul smell! No dust, and no allergies. A breeze to clean! Not only that, but I left the old box with the old litter next to the new box with the new litter, both perfectly clean. Both girls took to the new box like it had been there forever, and completely abandoned the old one, which hasn't been touched for two days. That, alone, speaks louder than any of my words could. Pioneer Pet, my entire family thanks you! Somebody got it right. Finally!

Dustiness: 4/5 Scent: 5/5 Clumping Strength: 2/5 Clumping Speed: 1/5 Odor Control: 4/5 Tracking: 0/5 Density: 1/5 Overall, it is a decent clumping cat litter but is not particularly good at any one aspect. I can only recommend it if you're looking for a natural alternative to clay litter but you must be prepared to put up with its serious flaws. BACKGROUND I bought this litter to try after being fed up with the insane amount of dust in the Ever Clean litter I had been using. I've not transmitted fully to SmartCat but in the two weeks since, I've seen enough to decide I will not proceed beyond what I have bought. Between Ever Clean and SmartCat, I will recommend neither but if I had to choose, it'll be SmartCat only because the dustiness is a serious health risk to both my cat and I. The main reason I am discontinuing with SmartCat is likely to affect only a small group of cat owners, so for those who do not have the same problem as my kitten, SmartCat should be an otherwise excellent litter choice. DUSTINESS (4 out of 5 stars) My kitten litter is located in the powder room that has black floor and wall tiles. Hence if there is any dust cloud I'll be able to see it very clearly against the dark background. Darker surfaces also make it easier to see how thick the layer of dust, if any. I'm pleased to say SmartCat has significantly less dust than Ever Clean. But it is not completely dust free. SCENT (5/5) The litter does not carry an artificial scent, which is excellent. It still does have a distinct smell, something akin to wheat or flour. It does give you the confidence that the product is natural. CLUMPING STRENGTH (2/5) SmartCat does not do a very good job at clumping. The pee clumps are fragile and need to be scooped out carefully or it will break apart. It also doesn't clump onto poop very well. After scooping it out of the heap of litter, it's evident that some parts of the poop is not covered with litter, and whatever little bits covering it seem to be stuck only because the poop is moist. It makes me wonder if this is the efficiency of the clumping strength, maybe I should just go with a non-clumping litter instead. As a point of interest, I took a small pinch of clean litter and cupped it in the palm of my hand and dripped a few drops of water onto it, to see how well it absorbs the water and how well it clumps. The water turned the litter pieces into mushy bits, kinda like how flour reacts when mixed with some water. The "clumping" was more like the pieces being dissolved in the water to become this mushy lump instead. CLUMPING SPEED (1/5) Despite its poor clumping strength, it takes a while to "clump" too. I've witnessed my kitten pee in the litter several times and a very distinct pool of urine can be observed. It takes a few seconds for it to seep into the litter, and in that few seconds, my kitten as readjusted her stance and has stepped into her puddle of pee. With her damp paws, more litter is stuck to her, making it truly a wet and mushy mess. ODOR CONTROL (4/5) The litter does a good job at masking the smell of the pee and poop, such that you can barely notice any foul smell after they have been appropriately covered. But after you've scooped the clumped pee or poop out, it's a different story. I don't expect any litter to mask the offensive stench of poop but Ever Clean did an amazing job with pee, neutralizing all traces of pee smell. But not so for SmartCat. It's still recognizable just that it's more muted and can only be detected when you're close by. TRACKING (0/5) The litter is as light as styrofoam shavings. They track very badly and I've found bits all over my apartment. They don't hurt when stepped on but it sure annoys to find them so far from the litter box. If your cat digs as furiously as mine, then expect a lot of it to spill out by the side of the box. DENSITY (1/5) As mentioned, this is a very featherweight litter. It contributes significantly to the tracking problem but more importantly, it does not provide a firm surface for my cat to walk on. I have a polydactyl kitten with massive paws that were meant to aid in walking on snow and sand and even she too sink considerably into the litter (approximately a paw deep). The consequence of this is that she is perched much lower when she pees, therefore causing her fur near her rear to come into direct contact with the pool of urine. The lack of firm footing also causes her to shift her stance immediately after peeing or pooping, as she is uncomfortable, and that causes her to step on her pee or poop even before she has a chance to cover them up. CONCLUSION For the last two points alone, I am discontinuing using SmartCat as it makes my kitten a lot messier and dirtier each time she uses the litter box. Presumably an older kitten or a cat would be better at her toilet routine and the problems I've encountered will be gone but I cannot risk my sanity and my apartment's cleanliness to wait for that day to arrive. I will continue to search for another more appropriate litter but for those whose cats have no problems like mine, you may find it suitable nonetheless, especially if using a highly artificial and chemical litter bothers you.

Litter seems ok enough but my kitty hates it and would not use it no matter what I do to trick her. When she had to use it as a last resort when I took away all her other options, she refused to cover her deposits which is so unlike her as she is normally very fastidious. Even takes her time to scape her paws on the litter box before stepping out. With this litter however, she acted like the boogie man was after her and was always out like lightening, so much so that she seemed stressed and I started worrying she'll start doing her business outside. Update: I decided to use this litter only for my older foster kittens because my cat hates it and the younger foster kittens keep trying to eat it. I thought the bad smell was because my cat wasn't covering her business with this litter. I was wrong. The litter stinks when wet plain and simple. Even ordinary water will make it smell bad much less cat urine and feaces. Turns out I'm not the first reviewer to point this out. If you want a litter that is good for odour control, doesn't turn into sludge that sticks to the bottom of the litter box, doesn't track anywhere, doesn't either repel cats from their litter box or do the exact opposite and make them eat their litter. In other words, if you want a litter that pretty much does what a litter is supposed to do, then for heavens sake don't buy this one.

Out clumping clay huh? It certainly out clumped the 'fresh step' litter I was using before! It absorbes so well it even got the goey clumps that were stuck to the bottom of the box! Okay, I’ll stop gushing over my new fave litter and actually give some feedback. - It does exactly what it says when it says it out clumps clay. It leaves nice hard clumps that don’t break or crumble at all. - The odor control is superb. I live in a college dorm room with a private bathroom. My kitty’s box is in the bathroom so I can contain the tracking but before then I could still smell it. Not anymore! I’ve had it for two weeks and haven’t had a single stinky turd. It smells like some sort of grain and it’s actually quite refreshing after the years of awful smelling clay. - It tracks an average amount. Probably better than my ‘low track’ litter that actually made the tracking problem worse, and if you end up stepping on it, it isn’t that bad to stand on. - I wouldn’t say it’s dustless but it’s a relatively small amount and it smells like rice so it’s actually kinda pleasant. -It’s very lightweight. I wasn’t necessarily looking for a lightweight litter but it very much is light and easy to carry from my campus post office to my dorm, even with a 12 pack of canned food. -I get about 2 weeks out of one 5lb bag of litter. You could make it last longer if you really wanted to, but I think 2 weeks for one litterbox is a good estimate. (please use more than 1 box if you aren’t in a dorm) Cons: -The bag doesn’t reseal so if you open the top of the bag the way it says to you will end up with a massive bag of lightweight litter for your cat to knock over. I tend to snip the corner off so it’s not that big of a deal -it comes in a plastic bag instead of a cardboard box. This isn’t a big problem but since I bought this litter to help the environment, I wish I had the option of a biodegradable alternative. Also, it would fix the resealable bag problem. -My cat has recently started knocking over his very tall litterbox. This might be because it’s lighter than he expects so he’s putting too much weight on the sides. I think it’s more likely that it had been moved and he was trying to get out of it from the side but it’s something I wanted to note in case it was a problem for anyone else.

Well it’s light weight and unscented and dust free. Clumps fine and adheres to poop. But. Huge but. The *litter itself* smells like moldy cheddar meets rancid butter scented oil. It’s so bizarre maybe rotting cheddar popcorn? Idk Ive never smelled anything like it. On morning day 3 it is going bye bye. Trust me my cat is young and healthy and has a good diet, 2 pees a day and 1 poop sometimes daily or every other. The box has never smelled bad! Never, even in the last days of my geriatric previous cats. People are “surprised I have a cat” when visiting (I mean people are gross with their cat boxes but this comment makes me raise my eyebrows every time). Anyway, I scoop minimum once daily, sometimes 2x. I like clean. So when her first usage in this box smelled so weird I thought she was sick - diarrhea or something. But no it was just pee. Next day both - and the smell! Oh gah. 🤮 Even after scooping, the litter itself smelled so bad with that weird smell. I thought maybe it’s wet? after drying it will go away? No. Day 3, AM scoop unbearable - truly. Into the trash with the whole damn box full. I’m sorry, maybe this was a bad batch I know plant materials rot- grass and sorghum but Idk. It smelled fine out of the bag until it got just a tiny bit of moisture. I mean it clumped and I removed it, it wasn’t even semi clumped and falling back in. It stunk from usage one, by day 3 it was trash. That’s not right or acceptable in my household from money or hygiene standpoints.

Litter clumps really hard making for a very easy cleanup. My cat has allergies and clay litters seem to cause the pads of her feet to dry and blister badly. There have been no problems with this litter at all! The particles are soft if you step on them and while there is a smell to the litter, it smells natural - not like chemicals and not like urine. It's been a great litter for our circumstances and needs! It's a bit on the pricey side but due to the hard clumps, none is wasted so it lasts. Also, I have found it to be dust free!! Recommended!

Litter bag was damaged and litter was all over the place. What a service!!

This litter clumps really well and has low dust particles, however it does track quite a bit because of how small the pieces are. I will continue to try and mix other litters but this one will be in my top 5. I find it does a good job at odor control too as long as they cover their dropping. I sift their box every morning to keep the litter cleaner longer but you can go several days as long as they have room to go and your box is big enough. I have 2 cats and started with the 5lb bag then bought the 20lbs bag after I was impressed by the clumping power. For $50 it's a pretty good product and I will have to see how long it actually lasts. I'd say atleast 2 months worth of litter

I bought this litter for my elderly Mother and she loves it. So much lighter and easier for her to clean out the litter box. Nothing sticks to the litter scoop and absolutely no odor. There is no litter wasted, therefore, the price works out the same as a leading litter. There is also no tracking and no dust. She highly recommends. We'll be buying this from now on. UPDATE : My last order came in the shape of a cube. It had obviously gotten wet throughout the bag. Not worth the hassle of returning. Amazon should just accept a picture of defective item and give out a credit for the same product.

Unscented. This is extremely important. Gross fake scents don't make dirty litter boxes smell fresh! Clean your box as soon as your cat uses it and there will be no smell. True story! This stuff is similar if not identical to PetSmart's grass seed litter. Very good! Clumps fast and hard. It is weirdly magic. I didn't know grass seed could do that. Can be tossed once used in organic bin as it is organic! Very important to me.
