As a boost, does the sd-1 do a good job to tighten things up? for rythm playing especially??

Yes, but it will add some mid range, in a good way tho.

I'm kind of confused to the manual: am I supposed to turn on my amp first or turn on this pedal first? What about the order of turning everything off?

Start with everything powered "off", or turn the guitar amplifier volume all the way down before plugging or un-plugging any of the gear you are going to connect to it. Once all cables are connected, then power up the guitar amp and/or slowly bring the volume up. . Here is one method: 1. Connect cable from pedal output to amplifier input; 2. Connect 2nd cable from guitar jack output to pedal input; 3. Power on the guitar amp and/or, adjust volume; 4. Step on the pedal to activate it, then set the pedal's gain and volume so its level is about the same as or slightly louder than the guitar amp's volume without the pedal activated. Note: if the pedal's LED doesn't illuminate, check battery or input / output cable connections, you may have to reverse them...

Can this pedal make a clean amp go heavy?

Not SO heavy, if the amp is totally clean it can get it nice and dirty, a littler crunchy. Blues/rock tones. I use it as a boost in front of a high gain head. If you're looking for a real heavy pedal try an OCD or a Maxon OD808.
