Does it need to be sharpened?

I don't think it needs to be sharpened. The edge is not real sharp (won't cut you), but it's sharp enough to pry the wood apart. The metal is very hard.

How wide is the blade (ax head, cutting edge)?

It’s about 3.5 -4”. It’s wide enough. We are very happy with it. Works better than a real log splitter.

Does this item really weigh 8.8 pounds? The description in the product information/technical details states that it is 13.73 pounds.

it weights more than 8 lbs. but don't think it's the full 13.7. it didn't work really well on the wood I have to split so it's been a while since I picked it up.

can this be used on tree stump to split since stump won't Split to get wedge out, can it be used? only answer if you know.

I would know how to answer better if you told me what tree, how old, how big, etc. - but I would say you could probably use it to get a wedge out but there's probably much better ways to do that...
