5CB Pulls Red on Reds
Just used the 5CB Medium Chestnut Brown last night and it’s not exactly the color I wanted but I knew the risk I was taking going in and I don’t hate it. The formula for this is runny and does drip, so watch out for those white counters and rugs. The color result is redder than I wanted but the box does indicate it can pull red for redheads so that’s on me, I should’ve gone for a fully cool toned brown. Perhaps this was due more to the quality of my sun bleached hair and general dryness, but it was striking during application how much my hair texture became like straw. I expected to follow up with my usual hair repair methods (Amika RX) but to my surprise, the provided conditioner more than restored the texture to a soft state. Attached some pictures with side by sides, befores on the left. I think I’ll prefer the color in a week or two when it inevitably fades a shade. I have a handful of grays toward the crown and this fully covered those, however, I can’t yet attest to longevity of the coverage. **Update** I used and reviewed this dye in October, it is now December and I have added an additional update picture (roughly 2.5 to 3 months after application). I was correct that the faded shade is what I’m most happy with, especially once the ends lightened up, which happened probably by week 3 or 4. Gray coverage is excellent though my growth seems to already be showing so I’m spotting silvers again. Red tone is lasting very well and I’m happy, just gotta find some sort of root touch up now. Overall a recommend for the lasting color, but I will mention that my hair is much much dryer over the last couple months than usual - I feel my hair usually “bounces back” after a dye (I tend to dye my hair once or twice a year only) and after this box it did not. So if your hair is chemically treated or severely damaged, I would look for a potentially gentler dye formula if there is such a thing. I am using deep conditioner treatments or a quality conditioner in the shower, but what seems to help most is a post shower cocktail: light spritz of Pacifica Silk Rice detangle spray, dime sized amount of JVN instant repair mask, a pump and a half of JVN blowout styling milk, and then the next day or morning 3-4 drops of the JVN nourishing shine drops (I also use Ouai hair oil but I’ve run out - and occasionally IGK mistress hydrating balm on the ends and before I ran out I’d frequently use the IGK Antisocial overnight dry mask which I can’t recommend enough lol) Best of luck to everyone on their hair journey :)

Very Strong Scent, but Color is Spot-On and Lasts
The L'Oreal Paris Superior Preference Fade-Defying + Shine Permanent Hair Color is an excellent hair dye that effectively covers grey hairs and offers color that lasts. The dye works similarly to other hair-dying kits - simply add the color gel to the bottle of color creme, shake, apply the dye to your hair, and allow it to sit for 25 minutes before fully rinsing out the hair dye. The dye covered my grey hairs fairly well, although if you have dark/black hair like mine, the grey hairs will be just slightly lighter colored than your darker strands. The coloring looks very natural and I like how long the dye seems to last. The only real indicator that I've dyed my hair is when my hair starts finally growing out. The only complaint I have about this particular dye is that the scent is very strong and chemical-like, so if you have a sensitivity to strong chemical scents, you may want to use something else. That issue aside, the dye caused no irritation to my skin, was properly colored, and simply looks good. It's a budget-friendly hair coloring that I would purchase again.

Pretty color
Works well, color is as described. My hairdresser recommended L'Oreal if going for an at home hairdresser dye.

Not the same color
Okay, so... unusual review. My hair is brown, a very blah "mouse" brown. I wanted to give it more color and tried this. IT TURNED MY HAIR RED. My hair is RED. I was shocked and thought I must've done something wrong, but I've tried the same dye a few times now and it's still coming out red. That's the reason I removed a star, but I'm keeping it high because I love it! I have gotten so many compliments on it. I had a photoshoot recently, so I'm including a picture from that so you can see what I mean. The color really lasts. I've never looked at it and thought, "Ew, I need to redo this." I only do it because my roots are showing. If I could find a matching dye in just roots, I'd do it. It didn't come out like the box; it came out better. I love it, but be warned if you want the color on the box, you may not get it.

great at-home color that covers the grey
I've not been to my hair salon in 13 weeks due to the pandemic and a lot of grey was showing. I applied the coloring per instructions for 30 minutes and it has turned out lovely. It looks like the grey is completely covered, hair is soft and shiny. At this point I don't know if it will last 4-6 weeks as the company has suggested, but I usually went to my hair stylist every 4 weeks anyway so I'll have to wait and see how long it lasts. Hair is still shaggy until salons open up but at least I don't have to stare at all that grey. It looks so much better and makes me feel better.

Absolutely distraught! This is NOT the color advertised.
I don’t even know where to start. My hair is a huge part of how I feel about myself, and this product completely ruined it. I used L’Oréal Paris Superior Preference 5CB Medium Chestnut Brown expecting a warm, golden brown like what’s clearly shown on the box. My natural color was already very close to that (as you can see in the first photo of my before hair), so I wasn’t making a drastic change. Instead, my hair turned much darker with a reddish tone that looks nothing like “medium chestnut” or “golden brown.” The result is completely off from what’s advertised. This isn’t a subtle difference, it’s an entirely different color. I followed the instructions exactly. There’s no reason this should have happened. I am honestly distraught. I cried after seeing the result because this is not even close to what I chose, and now I’m left trying to fix something that should have been a simple, safe color match. It feels incredibly misleading to market one color and deliver something so different. At the very least, there should be a warning about how dark and red this can turn. I would absolutely not recommend this shade if you care about getting anything close to what’s shown on the box.
