Can you use this product to clear clogged drains?

Yes, but be careful of fumes or flakes ending up in your eyes! Also, if you have older or metal traps be careful because concentrated amounts of sodium hydroxide can eat trough age related thinning of pipes. I have used used many times but also with a snake as I have found a clog form near a hardening formation. The sodium will help with the clog now but the but the snake is insurance for the future.Phil

It's about product purity. Food grade is guaranteed pure...so there are no additives that could screw up your soap batch.

When they produce non-food-grade lye, companies are allowed to add small amounts of anti-caking agents or other ingredients without declaring it on the label. These chemicals could either "dilute" the strength of your lye slightly, or cause a side reaction in your soap that you don't want, causing your batch to seize or behave in an unexpected way, such as interfering with your colorants or scents.

Also, since the additive is not declared on the label, they can change it at any time or stop using it whenever they want. That could cause you to have random, unexpected soaping issues that can't be explained or avoided.

Soap-making can be complex enough as it is. Don't make it harder than it has to be.

What weight/volume of micro beads do I need to add to weight/volume of water to make a solution used in pretzels?

I have been using this for year for my pretzels and I normally use a 5% solution.  So if you use 1000grams of water slowly which is 50grams of lye beads.
