Kinky Curly Curl Custard Gel, 8 oz (983170)

Edit: Figured out my day 2 and 3 curls. I wet my hair with a spray bottle. Apply Curls Blueberry Bliss and scrunch, then apply a thin amount of gel with prayer hands and scrunch again. Love this gel. For reference I have low density, fine, wavy-curly hair. I am mixed with Italian and black and my hair frizz is extremely hard to tame. I live in Georgia with humidity and semi hard water. Now on to the review. I had been using the Kinky Curly shampoo and Knot Today leave-in for a couple of months and really liked the products, so decided to try out the gel. Turns out these are some of the best curls I have ever gotten. I washed with Come Clean, deep conditioned with Deva Curl Heaven in Hair, added Knot Today leave in and then applied the curling custard. The gel goes on smooth and left me with no wet frizz. It dried into a cast that was easy to break and left my hair soft and moisturized. The gel texture resembles flaxseed gel so it is somewhat wet and slippery which I think helps it blend into my hair better than any other gel I've used before (which includes Shea, Mixed Chicks, Curls Blueberry Bliss, Aussie, Garnier, Eco Styler). It just glided on. For this specific photo I actually washed my hair in the night, and wrapped it with a silk scarf while it was still half wet and could already feel the cast. In the morning I undid my wrap and shook the hair out to break the cast and voila! Big spiral curls. They we're so beautiful. I honestly wasn't expecting these results. In this pic I didn't style upside down (I did side ways) which is why my roots are not springy, but that was on purpose as I wanted to wear my hair half up half down with a relatively smooth top. In the end the curls lasted about 75% of the day, which is great. I was out and about at the park and my son tussles my hair a lot. Very satisfied. I haven't been able to figure out the next day curls yet, but I am super happy with the wash day results and am pretty sure I can figure out how to work this into 3 days without washing. This gel doesn't dry my curls.

I have purchased this hair product several times. I use other hair products too but this one is a favorite because of the way it allows my curls to hang out in their curl families with minimal effort from me. I use it after washing and conditioning and I am still in the shower with saturated hair. It scrunch it in and continue scrunching with my head flipped forward. Then I closely wrap my hair up and go about my normal routine for a few minutes. Then I unwrap and let my curls fall and continue to scrunch up until I am satisfied. The next day I can spritz my hair with water until dampened and then rescrunch since the product is still good again when moistened.

I have been on the hunt for a lightweight, firm-hold gel, with water-soluble ingredients, that wouldn’t weigh my 2c fine hair down or cause any breakage/shedding, and I’ve finally found exactly what I’ve been searching for! A little goes a long way, and my curls last for days. I’ve been using it for at least 2 months at this point. I also love that price is reasonable for how much you’re getting, especially since I don’t need to use much. I also like that it comes in a tub rather than a tube or other container since none of the gel will go to waste and I can have better control on how much I use. I absolutely love this gel and can’t go back to using anything else!

I don't think I've seen any reviews that factor climate into the effectiveness of this product, but trust me - if you have highly porous hair (like I do) and you live in a high-altitude or an extremely humid climate, this product may present some problems for you. Since the product relies exclusively on the humectants for moisture and softness (there are no oils in it), the amount of water in the atmosphere will determine whether or not this product moisturizes effectively. If you live in an extremely dry climate, your hair will be extremely dry because there is so little moisture in the atmosphere. If you live in a very humid climate, then your hair might be limp or extremely puffy and difficult to style because of the moisture overload. Also, having too much water in your hair at all times could weaken the strands and cause them to break. So, if your area has climate extremes, you might want to avoid this product. I live in Southern California, so the weather isn't that big a factor for me. That being said, while I consider this product EXTREMELY expensive, it is something I would use again, just because it works very nicely for me and has helped me retain significant length (my hair is 4b). I use this as a hold product, rather than a curl definer. I apply the product, braid or twist my hair and let it dry. I find that I get really good hold, my hair is extremely hydrated because of the intense humectant properties, and I get lots of volume. There is some crunch, but I'm conditioned to believe that crunch = lasting hold, so I don't mind. Even in comfortably moist weather, It might not work for everyone for a variety of other reasons, largely because everyone's idea of a good hair day is different. Some people want their curls to be completely and totally defined at all times (I don't - I like some frizz). Some people hate crunchiness (I don't mind it). Others complain about shrinkage (eh - what can you do?). No one product can satisfy everyone's individual concept of "dream" hair, but for the amount of money this costs, it's not unreasonable to expect greatness. I would say that if the $20+ price tag doesn't bother you, you don't have any exalted expectations and you live in a mild climate, then give it a try. Otherwise, Ecostyler gel mixed with curl activator works pretty similarly and costs less than half as much.

Love the product, but too expensive !

Review for KCCC: My hair type is 2c, low porosity. I didn't like thus as much as Mop Top Custard. I am still on the look out for a good alternative that is glycerin free for humid seasons. Pros: Gives good shine Doesn't dry out hair Subtle vanilla scent Cons: Too high maintenance. Either it was rock hard or is soft but curls don't keep definition. Very hard to strike the right balance. Not the best frizz control. Doesn't give volume if you air dry hair. Not very curl enhancing even when used in combination with leave in. I have had better results with lower maintanence products so this is getting returned. Review for Spiral Spritz: I've found that Giovanni is a much better gel for me as opposed to KCCC and the Spiral Sprutz works well as a refresher for second day hair. It's lightweight and moisturizing with just a little bit of flexible hold. It pairs well with Giovanni's direct leave in too.

This stuff is great for my fly away, frizzy hair. I like that I can re-wet my hair to activate it again.

This product is just amazing. I use this for my kids who both have different hair types. I put this in right after I wash their hair when it's dripping wet. Small sections and let it air dry. Lasts for about 3 days and stops the curls from getting tangled or matted. You can refresh the curls the next day with a little water from a spray bottle. Doesn't make the hair crunchy and does not dry out the hair. It's expensive but it's worth it.

I buy this every month. It’s quite pricey but the quality is great. Leaves my hair moisturized and soft. I can go three days without added more gel and my hair doesn’t go stiff. Also leaves no white residue in my hair. Value for the many Pennies!

The best product for styling curly hair.

Gave me a very good result with the first use itself. But it took a few weeks of experimenting to get good juicy healthy curls. I am live with his product. Will buy it again
